Title: finally high speed internet
Post by: jcassity on July 03, 2008, 11:33:21 PM
we went with hughesnet so if anyone is interested, keep in touch.  so far so good.
we got the middle plan for 79/mo , that allows me to delete two dedicated phone lines at about 50ea after taxes as well as two dedicated isp services at 10bux each.

seems like doing this switch saves me money.  The best part is this service can be expensed with my company.,, so its kinda free.:D

It's a nice feeling, ain't it, Scott? As you know, I just got high speed recently myself. Still not up to city-speed levels (I downloaded Ubuntu Linux yesterday, 700 mb, took about an hour) but it's still way, WAY better than dialup! And like you, I saved money by canceling the extra phone line and dial-up ISP, so my high speed is actually cheaper than dialup was costing me...

I'm still waiting...fiber-optic cable lines are run throughout the whole area, just waiting for the cable company to turn on the new system and get everyone hooked to it. I'm getting real impatient...

Congrats, Scott, that's cool. I've heard mixed things about HughesNet, mostly with the latency and the monthly cap on bandwidth. Hopefully you have no problems.

The hugesNet package i got was the middle plan,, pro plus or whatever for 79/mo.

Ive got it dumped into a linksys and so far so good.  I have been able to vpn into the company for work, the delay is there or the new cisco vpn client is more forgiving.  I figure its the cisco software because I can use my cell phone for internet while driving and i still get company email.

So far so good though, it took me a few conversations with hughes to understand what was meant by the rumors I had heard.

all the rumors are kind of true now that i understand the substance behind them.

I have 500MG i can download in a 4 hour period before my speed is "throttled" back to 56k.  It was discribed as a water tower or water dam of data being filled up with a 56k pipe.  The data will come to me full throttle when the tower is full such as if an overflowing dam breaks at the base and water rushes at me per my plan speed (ie- the plan i purchased was 1.24mbs download, 500k upload)

If i happen to use up 500mg , I will have the speed of 56k (like the original force of the river that filled the dam).  My 500mg will refill while i am just browsing or better / quicker if i happen to not need the computer.  ITs not a daily cap, just a cap that is best kept full.

If i simply surf on pages and look, my dam is filling back up.  being here on this or just about any site for that matter does not constitue usage.  I am not browsing or surfing but if i happen to open a thread with pics out the ying yang, yeah that used up some data.

The whole system is contantly filling back up to you have to be a busy bee to run your throttle down to 56k.

I just rand a speed test on speakeasy.net and got 862kbps down and 249kbps up.  This number changes depending on the moment.  Just a few hours ago i had 3.6mbps down and 1.2mbps up (tested when i got up this morning).

there is a waiver though,, during the hours of 3-6 am , there is no throttle limitations.  Hughes says this is a time designated for people to update thier computers and such or just download.

so far im not unhappy, and the work computer worked well with it.
