Title: English Classes Part II....
Post by: MexCougar on March 11, 2005, 09:30:45 PM
I was seeing an old text in english, and it had some "strange" words, like "Thy" , "Thou" and "Thee". I took the dictionary and oh surprise ! they means "You" and all related possesive ways.....Its that correct ?

And why not of these words are used today ?

As far as I know they all mean you. They are 'old english' like shakespeares stuff thats why its never used.

the dictionary is correct

old english really isnt something of importance anymore, if youre interesting in Shakespear, or reading old english, its great to know, but other than that, it has no real purpose anymore

It's just a part of the old language that's fallen out of usage.  Just like how "new" words will eventually become unpopular again.  A good example is the word Millenium... a thousand years.  That was used a bunch around the year 2000 because it was the end of the millenium. Now that it's over, no one uses the word nearly as much.

MexCougar -- It's kind of like in Spanish when you conjugate a verb for "vosotros."  Hardly anyone uses vosotros conjugation anymore except in very formal or old writings but it is still considered to be part of the language.
