i have an 85 t-bird, does the 87 - 88 turbo coupe hood fit it
the one with the vents i mean
Yes it will. I have an '83 'Bird and I have a hood from an '87 Turbo Coupe on it.
does the standard hinges work or do i need to get turbo coupe hood hinges
Same hinges
if you have a 5.0 you need to fix the alt bracket by grinding it down. Especially if you have a shot motor mount. Check out coolcats.net in the tech section.
I have an 85 bird that had a 3.8 v6.... I purchased an 87 TC hood and it bolted right up. No mods. It looks so much better too! I love it. Hung my old hood on my garage wall.
i have the 5.0
what does the alt bracket hit on the hood, is it the vent?
it hits on the vent. I didnt think it would matter till my motor mount went and broke it right out. You just need to grind down on it alittle bit to get extra clearance. Have you never had a car with a big bump in the hood from the alt bracket?
on coolcats it says the ac bracket, is it the ac bracket or the alternator bracket
ac bracket.
whoops... I ment ac... sorry...
Ok, my question is when I get the hood (tc) and put it on my 86 5.0. It says i will need the inserts for the vent to keep water from dumping on the dist. Now here's the kicker wouldn't ford have design the hood not to allow that and if not aren't there some inserts that will prevent water from coming in, but not air?
Ford didn't design the hood for a V-8 and dumping water on the distributor wouldn't be an issue for the 4 banger. The TC would have the ducting installed. For a V-8,the ducting won't fit.I made block off plates from aluminum to prevent the issues of anything coming through the scoops onto my engine.
Yep, and Vinnie is going to start making them so we all have nice ones like him... huh, vinnie.
(just kidding, don't bother Vin about it.) Although I'd be willing to pay $25 for a pair....
I cut plexie glass and glued them on.with little drain holes, got tired of washing the car down hill.
what do you guys think about putting in a screen type thing, kind of like a screen door metal screen. it would let air in to the engine compartment, but should block piles of water coming in
or is my logic wrong
I'd think your thinking is wrong.Water going through those scoops (with a screen) at 70 mph will probably go right through pretty easily. My blockoff plates are the best, and only pair,in the entire world.....literally.Kitz had a good idea though, functional.
There gotta be something on the market to prevent water from coming in, but allow air 2 pass through. That seems like a waste of potential, meaning cold fresh air can cool down the engine bay as well some get sucked into a cold air kit (cone style).
just to let you guys know... water coming in WONT hurt anything, unless you are in BAD need of a tune up... mind you if you have polished work under there, it can make it a bitch to keep shiney...
It would probably be pretty hard to make the scoops functional on a V-8 car (I'm not saying impossible),due to where the scoops are in relation to the a/c and distributor. Not much room for anything.I can almost touch the distributor with my hand through the scoops.I built my block off plates from aluminum. They are great.

I have polished stuff under there, that was the reason for my plates.
youpey, yes u can put the 87-88 tc hood on you vehicle there's another guy on here who an 84 bird with the tc hood. Hey vinniebird if ever your gonna bulk sell those insert. i'm game tor buying 1. but i would like to test it 1st without the insert to see how cooler the engine will become and with all that excess cool air inside i'm sure the air intake will suck it up as a indirect ram air. In theory. remember most carb setups don't have a ramair system just like my 85 ramcharger. So any and all air in the compartment is suck in by virtual blowby
Honestly,I don't think the scoops make much of a difference.I know they don't help my engine at all because I have EFI with a cold air intake in the fender.More for looks than anything else.I bought this hood because at the time,I couldn't find a decent flat hood anywhere, and, this one that I'm using now was $35.00.
i finally got the hood on, but it looks like the vent bolt ishiznitting the fan shroud. has anyone else had this happen before. i am going to try to trim the bolt down, but i was wondering if anyone else has seen this
I had that happen. I just drilled out holes in the fan shroud. Doesn't look the best, but it works.
Got pic? of the hood on?
not yet, i will wait until i get it lined up right
You did change the the latches?,I was not kidding .
i used my old latches, you didn't include the original from the 87 because you said they weren't correct
i finally got the hood on, strait with nothing hitting anymore.
i cut the 4 studs and the i ended up cutting the ac bracket. i took off the vent and saw it was a little too close for my liking. after cutting it, i think i should have no problem with clearance.
also, i had a small issue with the hood being off on one side, it looked raised up, but it wasnt hitting anything. when i pushed it down a bit it was lined up. a little elbow grease and it looks good now.
hey brothers here are some pictures, i took pics of both my babies
