Title: Sun visors question
Post by: DerikWayne on June 14, 2008, 08:04:10 PM
I have a set of sun visors up for auction on ebay. This guy keeps e-mailing me saying that they are not OEM visors that came out of a1988 Thunderbird. He has e-mailed twice now stating this (he even seems upset). I promise that I personally took these visors out of a 1988 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe myself. They look stock to me, but maybe I'm wrong.

Here's the link to the auction so you guys can look for yourselves: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=110259597751&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&ih=001 (http://"http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=110259597751&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&ih=001")

Can someone shed some light on the subject and help me out? If these visors do not sell and I relist them, I'd like to make sure I know what I'm talking about.

Thanks,

Derik

They are identical to the ones I removed from my '88 non-TC Thunderbird. I'd imagine Turbo Coupe ones would be the same.

Actually, check that - they are also identical to the ones I removed from my '87 TC parts car (except those were blue). I sold 'em to a local TC owner to replace his cigarette burned ones. The guy writing you is a nut.

Just like the one that wrote me a few years ago when I was selling a pair of stock Mustang headers, telling me that they weren't stainless steel. He wrote several times and even threatened to report me to the FBI for fraud. Some people are just plain warped.

Thanks, man. I was hoping you'd be the one to reply to this thread because you're the "Thunderbird King."

Thank you very much!

Here are the visors that are in my 87 cougar
The shape appears to be a little different where the post connects. Could be the angle of the pic
I can get a better pic tomorrow.

Your visor mirrors don't appear to be lighted (like Bob described with the plastic covers). Illuminated visors were part of the "Luxury Light/Convenience Group" option so your visors are what was the "standard equipment" style.

I would bet that this guy doesn't know that there were two types and he thinks that all Thunderbirds came with the lighted ones.

The fabric mirror cover is for visors without the lights. I removed 'em from my '88 to install lighted visors (and then removed those ones to install a set from a moonroof car that didn't have the "tabs").

The Luxury Light/Convenience Group option was part of the Preferred Equipment Package for various trim levels and may be very common. Lighted visors was part of it. In fact, the visors are so good I wish my Explorer had them. The ones in the T-Bird are far superior. From my 1987 T-Bird brochure, the Preferred Equipment Packages are as follows:

151A Thunderbird
154A Thunderbird Sport
161A LX
162A Select LX
157A Turbo Coupe

All packages included:
- Rear window defroster (*1)
- Electronic digital clock
- Interval wipers
- Light Group
- Power Lock Group
- Dual electric remote-control mirrors
- Electronic AM/FM stereo radio with cassette tape player
- Speed control
- Power driver's seat
- Tilt steering wheel
- Power side windows
- Bodyside and decklid stripes (except T/C)
- Syled road wheels (except T/C)

(*1) Premium Sound System or graphic equalizer may be substituted (except when Electronic Equipment Group is ordered)

The package also included some or all of the Premium Luxury Package:

- Heavy-duty battery (sport, Select LX, T/C)
- Electronic Equipment Group (Select LX) (*2)
- Front floor mats/luggage compartment mat (Select LX)
- Luxury Light/Convenience Group (base, Select LX) (*2)
- Power antenna (Select LX)
- Dual power seats with power recliners (Select LX) (*3)

(*2) Detailed on page 18 ( :D )
(*3) Power recliners are not included with optional articulated sport seats on LX.

The Luxury Light/Convenience Group included:

- Cornering lamps
- Dual illuminated visor vanity mirrors (standard on LX)
- Illuminated entry (standard with LX and available as a separate option)
- Autolamp system

So there were several ways to get the lighted visors, and with one package base model buyers could get a lot of goodies including them. It's interesting that you had to get the Luxury Light/Convenience Group to get them, though, which means that any Sport or T/C buyer who didn't SPECIFICALLY opt for it (or SPECIFICALLY for the Premium Luxury Package) wouldn't have gotten them (and also wouldn't have gotten autolamp, but I've never seen a T/C that didn't have that). I guess most T/C buyers opted for it.

I would just answer him by quoting Quietleaf's post:hick:

I would then tell him to do a little more research before trying to call someone on something.

Excellent post, quietleaf :burnout:

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=brochure+1987+thunderbird&category0=

Handy piece of information to have, especially if you like adding options like I do. I'm sure there are brochures for cats or other years available as well.

Here's his latest comment:

I understand that not all were lighted, but none on any Thunderbird after 1983, have met in the center of the roof.
I have an 83 Elan, 83 Turbo Coupe, 86 Turbo Coupe, 88 Turbo Coupe and a 94 Super Coupe. The 88 and the 94 are the only ones with Moon Roofs, and none meet in the center.

Point him to this thread. The guy is obviously talking out of his ass.

I had to break the frickin' tabs off my visors when I installed the overhead console because they meet in the center and got in the way of the thing...

Is this the same guy selling the VAM listed as a supercharger that  Carm linked to?:hick:

Seriously, he's kidding, right?  I've never seen a non moonroof car where they DIDN'T meet in the middle.  Both Cougars I've owned had OEM mirrors that were exactly like Daminc's shown.  One set red one set grey...

X2... I seem to remember my hole in the roof cars used shorter visors with extra area between them for the dome lamps and motor mechanism...

That would be true, I stand corrected.

So for clarification, there were three types used for the 1987-'88 models.
