Well I love the concept ford had for us people these days that need more than one power port than the cigarette lighter port that my 88 TC lacks. My wife's 04 Mustang has an extra one located in the center console between the seats. Im one of those people that need more than one port as well, and admired my wifes mustang for that, so I came up with the perfect idea for anyone with a fox bird or cougar since we all have that annoying but sometimes useless light in our center console. I removed mine and went to Radio Shack and got the same port that the mustang has and fitted into the light socket hole and disconnected the light. I never liked the light anyway and sometimes since I use my center console as a cup holder I sometimes forget to close it all the way and find the light on the next morning anyway. Wiring is simple, I just ran the wires up to the lighter port and spliced them in. Works awesome!
Heres a pic, looks factory to me and no more light to warm up my cold soda at the drive in movies too!!! lol

Nice idea.
Very nice. I bought one from a VW (because I liked the look) and have been considering putting it at the rear of the center console. It's too deep to fit at the back so it will have to go in at the side. But I also like your idea, too, since that's accessible by a passenger.
And the stock light is definitely awful. A low-profile white LED setup would be much better if designed properly.
Nice find!
Question. My car is a consolette. I have one wie with connector under the consollette that leads to nowhere. Seeing as I have dual power seats/mirrors/windows and everything works and is hooked up properly, is THAT what this mystery connector is for? A light on a full console car?
If thats true, you should have 2 wires, one green/white stripe and one black. The green in 12v positive and should have a round female connector, the black male round.
I'll check tomorrow... I remember it is 2 wires...Can't remember much else right now...LOL.
Those two wires would be for the rear map (reading) light switch, Paul. That switch was available on cars with consolettes as well as the mid- and full-length consoles.
I put a second power port in my convertible's console liner, in almost the exact same spot (a little lower, actually), back in '03 so I can charge my iPod when the car is off. Works out great...you'll like the convenience and location.
Youmean the one switch next to the ashtray? That ones hooked up and working ;)
Well you have to tell us these things, Pauly. ;)
Wiring color(s), por favor.
I'll check ;)
OK!
2 wires -- 1 black, the other blue with red striping. The connector is rectangular in shape.
Looks nice. This would work for my phone charger ( because the TomTom is plugged into the normal one all the time LOL
Yep that deff sounds like rear map light switch, these lights were avaliable in tbird and cougar with the convenience light package. They were located on the panels that surround the rear quarter window.
I have the rear lights and IIRC when I installed my center console I just pluged the conector for the switch for the rear lights in and both the rear lights and the console light worked. I had the console wiring harness though so it was just a plug and play thing. All I know is it works, but I don't remember how I hooked it up last year :hick: If you have the console wireing harness you could look at it and I'm pretty sure that the console light is spliced into the same harness for the rear lights.
Hmmm. me thinks I have an idea.... Time to remove the casette holder/change organizer ;)
