Purple power by Castrol, (Dillute it to about 3-1 ratio first, its nasty) or a 50-50 simple green and water mix.

yes spray oven cleaner will take all the grease off the engine.

but will take all the paint off the engine with it..;) if you plan to repaint the the whole engine then great but other wise just use a good engine degreaser like foamy gunk.. the trick to useing foamy gunk is get the engine warm not hot then spray everything down and let it sit for like 10 minutes then pressure wash it all off. just make sure you cover the distributor with a small plastic bag or you will have tons  of fun trying to get the engine started again.. the inside of the distributor will be soaked.

If you leave the Gunk over night it will harden again.  I would only leave it for an hour or so.

You can use a pressure washer at a do-it-yourself car wash.
