Title: New Headlights Cracked my Windshield?
Post by: Jim_Miller on May 28, 2008, 11:58:17 AM
Both my low beam's on my headlights went out last week (one on monday the other on thursday) so I replaced them this weekend. Havent driven the car, Live out in the woods where theres no car's driving by that can fling a rock (unless they can "fling" it 5 miles) and the only thing that could be falling from the sky would be a bird  or something (no sign of that happining). I get in my Bird this morning and theres a 8" crack running diagonaly across my windshield right on the drivers side. I'm pretty sure it wasent there when I parked it last Thursday, and don't recall any rockshiznitting it driving to or from work thursday. and there's no round divet like a rock would make... just a smooth straight crack.

that sucks!

Same thing happened to my Saturn. Parked it overnight, next morning a big crack from the left A-pillar straight across the windshield. Saturns are pr0ne to it, though. I'll get it replaced in October, when the car is due for safety inspection :hick:

I had it happen in my Jeep a few months back. Took it to get fixed and the lady at the glass place said it happens all the time with changes in pressure. I have full coverage so it didnt cost anything other than being a pain in the butt.  25 years ago we had a Escort and sitting in the yard the side glass exploded for no apparant reason so I guess I can buy the pressure change scenario

How cold did it get overnight?  When you drove the car did you have the heat/defroster on?

Mine cracked last summer in the '84, no warning at all. In fact it was at Cat Jam and it happened right before everyone's eyes (RJ is a witness LOL).

After getting replaced, the owner of the glass shop determined that delamination of the glass from the plastic had started in the lower righthand corner of the windshield and when it failed, the glass cracked.

In an effort to keep OEM glass in the car I tried to salvage a windshield from another car. But in the same corner it was starting to delaminate again. The glass shop owner told me that it would fail probably sooner rather than later...that's why I went with a new piece of glass. It's PPG and looks absolutely identical to OEM.

Ok, NOW I'm embarrassed!
I made that post just after getting to work, seeing that “crack” all the way into town. On the way home it sprinkled a bit and I noticed my wipers clicking as they went over it, I found this odd as windshield cracks are generally smooth.
When I got home I took a closer look, and sped the crack off, I don’t know what it was, but it was reasonably straight (slight curve to it) about 8 inches long, and hard, took my thumbnail to remove it.
