Title: My dog got in a s with something wild
Post by: oldraven on April 29, 2008, 08:01:42 AM
Oz is going to cost me my house, if he doesn't brighten up. He's doing well, even now that he's sobered up. We think he got into it with either a Racpuppies or a Beaver. Our property borders a brook, and about 10M from the corner of the lot, there is a dam. Oz is always swimming around in there, and came back soaked when he got injured. I had the lights out when I called him in, so I didn't discover what had happened until morning. It was a wide open tear, about 2"x3", bare under the skin. Pretty brutal.

sorry to hear about that. We have to watch our dogs because of the coyote's around.

Many coyotes up around where you live, Oldraven? The frickin' things are everywhere in this part of NS. I saw one out by my garage one night (he turned on the motion sensing light) but of course by the time I got my rifle he was long gone.
I don't think a small animal would injure your dog's back like that - if it had been a beaver or racpuppies he'd likely have his face all chewed up. Oz's injuries almost look like he was taking on two or more coyotes - while he was chewing on one, another jumped on his back.
I figure it's only a matter of time before one of my cats goes missing. Two cats go outside, but one is wild (she was a stray from the cottage) and is "woods smart". The other one is a city cat and is stupid enough to be eaten. For the past few years there's been plenty of prey animals (rabbits, grouse, pheasants) to keep the coyotes happy and well fed, but when those animals start to crash there's gonna be lots of hungry coyotes around...

I'm also thinking it may have been a ground hog (not a gopher. I know a lot of people get those mixed up). A ground hog can make a pretty big mess, but they typically bite, not swipe.
It very well may be Coyotes. We have lots of them (Guysborough Co. is peppered with animals you don't want your pets tangling with) and I've heard them out on the ice yipping this winter, on the pond across the road. What's amazing is this dog has gotten two skunks, a porcupine, and now a mystery animal. He got his shots, in case it was a fox. There is a family that lives by the pond (small lake, really) and there were a few cases of dogs being put down last year in the county, due to contracting rabies from foxes. There haven't been any cases since the end of last summer, but I'm not taking chances with two children.
I think if it were Coyotes, though, Oz would be a thing of the past. Especially two. I don't know what they're like up your way, but around here they've been breeding with dogs, and are cross-bred with wolves to begin with, so they are getting bigger every year. They seriously get big enough to dwarf my German Shepherd.
, I hope he learns to stay out of the woods at night.

I would say from qty of dominate claw marks and the distance they are apart, it was an animal that had its claws in defense mode ,,meaning it looks like a pretty good size puppies and or a opossum.
A beaver will fugg up a dog, them are some pretty large claws even on a small beaver. I recently lost my Lab to a beaver which gashed his sckull and nose and that inturn created a sinus infection we could not get control of.

That's why I'm thinking Beaver. Because I know they're there, and I know Oz is always down wading around in that pool. The fact that he came back soaked tells me that this whole thing may have happened underwater. If that were the case, he wouldn't have even known there was an animal when he got swiped.
Even still, we've called the Dept. of Lands and Forest, and we're getting rid of those Beavers. If it wasn't this time, it will be next.

WOW! Well, I hope he comes out of this ok, no infection or such. He looks like he got his arse whooped and he knows it. ;) I bet he'll be sticking around the house for a while after this.

Ahhhh, dogs - they caused me more trouble than my kids ever have (so far). Hopefully yours will heal up soon. I still get weepy when i think of the one I tried to save from cancer - what a heartache.

The coyotes here in north Hants county are fairly small (~50 lbs) but there are a lot of them. I hear them howling and squealing almost every night - sometimes in the distance, sometimes in the alders on the other side of the river that borders my property. I hear them all the time when deer hunting as well, and have actually heard them growling and gnashing just a few yards in the woods as I've walked back to the truck after the evening hunt (which is exactly why I keep my rifle loaded right up until I'm just about to get in the truck). It'll be interesting if one is ever stupid enough to attack my bullmastiff (once he's grown he'll be ~150 pounds).
Coyotes are opportunists, and if your dog made fight at them they might have just said "fvck it" instead of fighting him too hard. If they were really hungry they might put more into it, but this time of year with the deer fawning, the pheasants and grouse mating (and thus acting stupid), and rabbits everywhere, I can't see there being many hungry coyotes about.
I'm thinking a groundhog would likely have gouged his face up - he'd likely have had to have his head in a hole face to face with the groundhog, so it'd be hard to gouge his side.
I've never heard of beavers attacking a dog, but I suppose if a dog sticks his nose into a beaver, the beaver is going to fight it. I must keep that in mind - there's a beaver in the river near my house. I don't know where his dam is, but he's chewed off several of the alders on the river bank, and I got a picture of him right in my yard during the spring flood.
Whatever it was, your dog certainly looks like he was humbled, judging by his submissive expression in that third pic :D

Hell we have coyotes here in the city.
Looks like he'll be OK though, but as mentioned, he may stay close to the house for a while ;)

Coyotes usually don't attack something equal to them in size. I'm not sure about a couple though. Here they're about the same size and color as my shepherd. (about 50 lbs). They get ballsy if you don't come out of the house to scare them away. they say if you do that they wont come around thinking its not there territory. It actually looks as though it's bite marks. looks like canine tooth holes on the sides of the wound on your pup. although its hard to tell the size of the bite in a pic. How much does he weigh.? He also looks embarrassed in the pic.

We have Coyotes in Madison. They are pretty big for normal ones. My My dog got tangled up with one last year at a dog park. The thing ran at me all crazy like and my Pit/Rot mix tackled it and gashed him pretty good. Drove him off but my dog didn't follow. (I love my dog BTW) My pup didn't have a scratch on him. The animal control people caught it and put it down the next day, but nothing was apparently wrong with it other than the fact it was stone cold crazy. It definitely was a Coyote, It wasn't rabid, and you could see where my dog got it across the shoulders and the Neck.
I don't subscribe to the whole "It wont attack anything bigger or the same size" club. It attacked me, and I outweigh it by a good 6.5 times. And this was in mid summer, with plenty of food. It didn't look scraggly at all. It looked, if anything, well fed.

Thats the ballsy part. They start to get used to something bigger not chasing them away. I always carry a club then I walk the dogs. (Mainly in summer) there's some videos around of what you just described but in a regular park
They can also easily jump a 6' fence.

Yep. And Since my dog is protective of me an my family, he wasn't having ANY of it. My dog scared the out of me more than the Coyote did. I've never seen him actually attack something before. He came back all happy with himself too. :)
I mean, he's such a baby. I guess we found his triggers though. Threaten me or my family, he lives up to his name.
(BTW, his name is Tank) ;)

I'd say muskrat....looks like something with canine teeth bit your pup...and beaver have teeth like rabbits. Muskrat will sometimes bite pretty mean to defend..he may have grabbed one, and it grabbed him right back, lol
Hope he stays clean (no infections)
Coyotes are everywhere in the US...if you havn't seen one...you need to open your eyes. And they will attack humans for no apparent reason. Don't believe what the media says about their fear of people...sometimes even a lowly coyote can have a pissy day. ;)

Last summer we came across a coyote in our back yard, crouching in the grass. didn't see it until we were about 100' from it. My dog just stopped and stared at it. the coyote just calmly got up and ran into the woods. I'm pretty sure it was a scout.
Here's My baby stalking the dog next door last Saturday (http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee79/daminc/Rockers%20and%20quarters/IMG_3474.jpg)

We don't have no stinkin' coyote around here. We do have deer, rapuppiess, skunks, black bear, opossums, bobcats and such. You guys have all the fun.

My aunt and uncle live in Vail, Colorado. Came home one day to a mountain lion laying on a tanning chair on their back porch. Chewing a big bone, nonetheless...
Sorry to hear about Oz. Our cat likes to fight cars. He's been hit twice now.

Thanks everybody. He's doing fine. So well, in fact, that the second we let him off his leash yesterday, he ran down to the brook and towards the dam. I had to call him out of the woods twice last night. Oz just isn't a fast learner. :P
I was looking through the encyclopaedia last night to see what a beaver paw would look like. Looks like it fits the bill perfectly.
And Oz is a medium-large dog. Not as husky as my Shepherd, but almost as tall. I think he's part Stafordshire. About the same size as the average local Coyote.
For everyone saying he looks ashamed, that's what Oz always looks like. Ashamed anyway. There's also the matter of being very stoned, since they put him under when they stitched him up. But he's a rescue from a shelter in Amherst, NS. When they picked him up, they said he had been running wild for a few weeks, which is why he's such a woods dog and a bane to our compost pile. Since day one, he cowers when I, or any other man, stands over him. If you lean down to pet him, he pees. I recently noticed that if he's standing next to me and I nudge him out of the way with my knee, he'll jump away from me. Buffy just walks out of the way, but Oz bounds sideways to cover his rump. I have the feeling he's gotten a boot to the ribs more than once. It explains him being wild when they found him. I wouldn't stick around for that either.

2 of our cats recently got tore up by some "hobo cats" that just showed up one night , well it went a week till i noticed that my cat was getting mad about us picking him up then he would just sit down in place. So at 9 am in the morning after work i had to take my cat into the vets. Well my girlfriend was over that weekend and noticed that he had some clotted hair on his head, i started to examine it then it popped off and started leaking puss all over the place. Then i found that his cheek also had puss in it so i had to squeeze that out too. The stuff was septic because it reeked.
I really hope that your dog gets better soon it is a beautiful dog.
