Title: Need a heavy duty glue for plastic...
Post by: Tbird232ci on April 16, 2008, 09:08:50 PM
I'm making a switch panel. I've googled up plastic adhesives, and everything I've read has been "this stuff is the best on earth", "this glue is stronger than any plastic", bla bla bla yadda yadda yadda.

Do you guys have a suggestion for a very strong plastic adhesive? It does need to be strong as the switches are a bit tough.

what are you wanting to glue the plastic to?

plastic is not porous enough to adhere to other materials, unless you get a plastic welder to weld to plastic pieces together.

JB Weld all the way. Hell even the "JB Quick" if youre impatient with the setup time still really strong.

Go to a paint and body supply place, and get some body panel adhesive. It WILL hold plastic, steel, aluminum, glass, you name it.It's made to hold, well, body panels together.AWESOME stuff.

yep, panel adhesive is the way to go. will bond plastic to metal too.
just don't clamp it to tight,or the adhesive will squeeze out and the bond will weaken.

what kind of plastic are you trying to glue?
some glues work better on certain plastics than others(like pvc glue)
but i agree, panel adhesive will probly be your best bet

ok,, i forgot to share my amazing dscovery when i had to basically redo all the little piece parts on my 20th door pockets and other plastic stuff.

It passes my redneck meter and drop test so you will be very surprised yourself.  thank me later but run out and get this stuff if you do not have it now.

ok,,
here goes the secret i forgot to share.

PVC pipe glue found at lowes ect.

I was needing a very strong glue to adhese the little platic ears on the door panels.  I made one mistake,,, and never again.

******DO NOT THINK YOUR SMART and use the pvc pipe cleaner.

simply add just the pvc pipe clue,,,,, light it with your lighter and blow it out real quick.  This will bake the outside of the glue so it does not run everywhere since its so thin.  It also does its little melting action kind of welding the two pieces as one if you look at it the joining areas under a magnifiing glass.

Enjoy,,, this stuff works great on all the platic things ive repaired to date including my riding mower plastic engine bay hinge.

X2, I use the JB quick all the time..  hell that is what I used to fix my broken Razzi body kit for my MN12 Cougar...:shakeass:  still got the body kit and the car is sped along time ago...

I used it on alot of things with great results.  I even used it to fill the factory hole for the clock in the dash, and add an in dash CB radio in that spot.

Loctite Quick-grab or any polyurethane caulk will glue plastic great, and cleans up with water until cured. Can be painted too.
