my brother bought a 1978 mercury zephyr with a built 302 but we don't know what axel it has in it? but I did a burn out and it was posi. but the door says code B for axel but the axel has a tag on it but it is rusted smooth.
http://www.coolcats.net/tech/general/axleinfo.html If it's more round-looking you got an 8.8 but if it has those longer straight edges on the top and bottom it's a 7.5.
I show a code B as a 7.5" 2.47:1 non locking axle. So chances are that it's been changed at some point.
Wow I didnt know they ever made anything higher than a 2.73. Thing must have been a pig. Wonder what engine it had originally. I cant see anyone leaving that thing in there anyway after an engine swap.
And that's not the highest ratio.
Code G was a 7.5" 2.26:1 non locking
Code H was a 7.5" 2.26:1 locking
No Fairmont or Zephyr ever got a 8.8 from the factory... So if it does have one, it's been swapped and the door tag info is useless...
Don't you know? All the cool kids have 2.26 open 7.5's...lol...shift to second gear at 65mph...lol.
Even though both tires spun, it could still very well be an open rear.
2.26 non-locking rear! gotta get me one of those:mullet:
I'm sticking with my 4.11's
