Title: Project - The Bat in The Cat
Post by: CougrrrFiveO on April 12, 2008, 09:16:39 AM
Found a perfect header panel on Wednesday and got around to installing it yesterday.
Started working on sanding and priming the Turbo Coupe hood, should have it on either tonight after work or tomorrow. Pulling the seats out again tomorrow, along with the carpet, and then wiring up my stereo. Hopefully, I'll have enough time to put the DashCap on too.
Carpet is ordered and should be here in a few days!
So, if everything keeps going like it has, and the weather cooperates, by the end of next weekend the Cougar should be back together and just about ready to get painted!!! Whoo hoo!!!!!

I'll take some progress pics tomorrow.

I'm just excited that it's finally so close to being back together!

Ha! Got some pics sooner than I said!
:D

I had some daylight left after I got done work today, so I decided to tackle swapping the hood! I knew it would've been smarter to do it when I had a friend to help, but where's the fun in that?

First, here's a pic of the new header panel. Not completely tightened all the way yet, and I have some of the lights out for cleaning and polishing.

And here are a couple pics of the dirty engine compartment (with the hood out of the way).

Here's the Turd-o-coupe hood.

Now, I would've taken step by step pics if I had a helper, or 4 more arms, but just pretend there are pics here.
1. I'm juggling the hood by myself, getting it in position.
2. I'm holding the hood in place with one hand, threading in a bolt with the other.
3. I have on side done, so I'm shimmying around the front of the car to get to the other side without letting the hood go.
4. I thread the other two bolts with one hand, and begin tightening.
5. I'm tightening the 4th and final bolt and... SNAP... the retainer nut breaks.

6. I get a retainer nut off the old hood and guzzle down a beer really fast.
7. I loosen up the side with the broken retainer, so the hood is only supported by one hinge and one hand.
8. I lift the side of the hood... with my head... and manage to get the broken retainer out and the new one in!
9. Tighten bolts, check fit, adjust a little and...

VOILA!!!

Problem...
I think the A/C bracket hit the driver's side scoop.
Check it out...

Okay... I "think" I have an extra set of scoops somewhere. If not... um...
Vinnie?
Yoo hoo? This thing on? Can you hear me Vinnie? :hick:

Anyway, it's done, and Jill Wagner approves!!!

Severely cracked dash, soon to be DashCapped!!!

Buckets seats temporarily in place... with random tools strewn about.

Removed the cracked hood scoop today and saw that it wasn't that bad. Patched the crack up, letting it dry now. Took apart my corner lights and removed the orange reflector. Epoxied them back together, and now I have clear corner lights. Put all the lights back in the header panel, adjusted the hood, and everything looks good! Waiting for the filler to dry, then do some sanding on the scoop. Also have to grind down the top hump in the A/C bracket so this doesn't happen again. Lots of minor clean up today in between the things mentioned. I'll probably wait until the carpet gets here this week before I do anything else major.
Had a slight problem too. I removed the battery to install the header panel, and after I put the battery back in, the car wouldn't start! Checked the battery and it only has 10 volts. I haven't driven the car in a year, but have started it every so often and let it run for about 20 minutes each time, and revved the engine some. I'll have to take the battery to work tomorrow and charge it up. Oh well... no vroom vroom today. :(

I can't wait to see that thing all finished and painted up...those seats seem vaguely familiar...lol.

For what it's worth, the same thing happened to me with the T/C hood...I ground that A/C bracket down to the bolt head pretty much...still had problems.  There is but one proper solution.....

A SET OF CHUCK'S POLY MOUNTS...best  things since sliced bread...a $20 poly trans mount would probably help also...I believe they are identical to the Mustang AOD tranny mounts.

Good luck!

Y'know, as soon as I closed the hood and that scoop cracked I remembered you telling me that!

be sure to check. my hood fit fine, stuck of peice of clay on the bracket, closed the hood, didnt even begin to touch. i guess its a 50/50 shot. probably has alot to do with my car havin 200,xxx miles and worn out motor mounts sagging the engine down. but check before you stert hacking up your brackets.

Hey, no problem! That's what I'm here for. Feel free to learn from my mistakes! I'll be over here, sitting in the corner. :dunce:

Can't tell you how stupid I felt. I heard about the clearance problems before, and Don just reminded me about it a few weeks ago, and yet I forgot about it!

To top it all off, I was planning on taking the bracket off and grinding it down when I replace the A/C compressor with the one I just got from Bob, and it STILL slipped my mind when I was changing the hood.

Worn motor mounts are 99.9% of the problem...as soon as you drop it into gear and hit the gas, the motor torques and smacks the a/c bracket against the scoop insert bracket on the hood.

The strange thing here is, my scoop hit the bracket as soon as I closed the hood. The car was not running, it was just that close in my car. The motor mounts are new factory mounts. The bracket is ground down now and there is some clearance.

Have not updated this in a LOOOOOOOOONG time. Been posting most of my updates on Facebook, but thought it was about time to put it here too. The Cougar is in the bodyshop and just a week or two away from fresh paint! Going with the factory color, Medium Sandalwood Metallic, but I'm going to add a few "touches" that I'm not ready to divulge yet. Here are a couple pics of the car in various stages of primer, blocking, etc.

I understand how you feel. I've been talking about getting this painted for years. I think Vinnie has painted his at least twice since I first started talking about it! After the paint is done, I have to work on getting the seats redone. No matter what, I am taking it to Carlisle in 2014. I already put in for my vacation.

Yes, that is the original factory color, Medium Sandalwood Metallic. It's amazing seeing it in person, it is exactly the color I remember when my dad brought it home in 1988. The original color faded fairly quickly from the py paint jobs and thin clearcoats they used to do. This paintjob and clear will be much, much thicker.  :)

I wouldn't blame you if you never drove it in salt ever again.  These cars are getting crushed, destroyed, and thrown away more and more every day.  They're really going to be hard to come by in the next decade or two.

My 'bird will never see salt again!  The amount of road salt put down is just insane...makes me really hate winter more and more each year!

Thanks Vinnie.I already have a new headliner and carpet in it. Going to redo the panels myself. The biggest expense is going to be the seats. Shopping around now for a reasonable but good upholstery place. At first I was going with an all black interior, but then I thought about black and tan. Just sold my mom a 2014 Fusion and her interior is black and tan, so I think I am going to copy that a bit and make it look like an updated Ford interior.

It's looking nice. I like the black/tan idea. The Milan I got has a black upholstery with light headliner and real dark brown dash. I think that works well.

That's beautiful. I think it would be nice to get some paint thinner or whatever and bring the Cougar on the grille out where it can bee seen. It would tie into the chrome Cougars on the tail lights. I am really loving that color. You never see it. That makes me want to paint mine a color that's different from everybody else's........hey wait....LOL.

I totally agree on the front emblem. It would tie in with the kitties in the taillights, too just like V says. The matte black/ chrome theme works well on this color.

I was thinking of doing that to the emblem, but the all black looks a lot better in person than it comes through in pics. I do need to paint the trans cooler though. The silver stands out too much with the blacked out grill. I also have a super secret idea to enhance the cougar emblem... but that will take some fab work after I get it home and in the Batcave.

I picked up a cold air kit from AmericanMuscle.com. It's not a BBK or anything special, just an SR Performance kit that is on sale for $49.99

http://www.americanmuscle.com/50liairinkit.html

It came with a py little motorcycle sized filter shown on the left in the pic below. I went to Pep Boys and picked up a big ass K&N (on the right). The best part about getting it at Pep Boys... list was $52.99 and it was on sale for $47.99 and I had $60.00 in rewards bucks so it cost no cash out of pocket!

X

X

Install was really easy. Take out the old set up, air box and all (also remove the bolts with bumpers on them that hold the top of the airbox on an angle. Jack the front of the car up, take a few screws out of the wheel well liner to make it easy to wiggle the filter in. Bolt the chrome plate in place and set the first tube through it and into the filter. Lube the rubber couplings, put all the clamps and tubes in place but don't tighten. Wiggle and adjust until everything sits nicely then tighten all the clamps. It did come with a chrome bracket for the mass air, but I did not use it. The new bracket mounts on the frame below the mass air instead of on the strut tower like the stock one. I may put it in later, but for now it seems fine without it, and most people I talked to didn't use it anyway.

So here it is, looking cool, and it does change the sound of the car.

Now, even better. So far total cost for the CAI & filter is $50. I found someone that wants to buy my stock set up for $40, and my used K&N panel filter for $20. So, putting in a CAI netted me a $10 profit!

And I can really hear that the car is breathing a LOT better. Next up is the exhaust, but I may have to just do the cat back kit now, and change out the catted H-pipe with an offroad X-pipe at a later date. Either way, the 2 1/2" cat back will be a lot better than the stock Cougar stuff I have on there after the H-pipe right now. I don't think it's even 2" diameter.

I just found a CD player that also has Sirius XM capabilities and Bluetooth hands free talking by syncing with you phone, and it comes with a mic to hang on the visor or anywhere you want it. I think I need that. I'm sure there are other brands, but I've got some studying to do. Are you upgrading or changing anything else in the interior or under the hood?

Pretty much everything, eventually. I think I have a JVC head unit in there right now. I switch stereos a lot. It has bluetooth and a USB hookup. I don't worry about Sirius on the stereo, I have the app on my phone so I can just use my phone and stream it right through the Sound system.

I also found a 65mm throttle body I had in the garage. I'm going to clean and polish that and port the intake a little. This is all temporary, my car will be in a constant state of flux. I am also thinking going to a terminator somewhere down the road.

The main thing was to get the body and paint done. Now just little tweaks along the way as I get rerady to reupholster the seats. Oh, I also still have to put in that floor shifter I got from you years ago Vinne. :hick:

What engine mods do you have done? Just h.o. mass air upgrade?
Title: Project - The Bat in The Cat
Post by: CougrrrFiveO on March 16, 2014, 11:06:34 AM
Yeah, the engine mods are basically 5.0 HO transplant, mass air conversion, cold air intake, that's about it. What gets the car moving is really the 4.10's and the shift kit in the tranny. The exhaust is finally all welded up and done and I got to take my baby home! It was still beautiful out by the time I got done work ( after 6pm) and I drove pretty much all night long! There are plenty of things I need to do soon. The smog pump is still connected, but the hose is just blowing out air since there is no tube on the x pipe to hook it to. I need to pull out all that  and seal off the tube coming from the heads. I have a smog pump eliminator pulley I can put on, but I will probably just go with a shorter belt. I also need to figure out what wiring got messed up with my sound system. Right now only right front dash and door speakers are working. That doesn't really bug me yet, since I am just enjoying the sound of the exhaust! Also need to see why my driver's window is binding after getting down about an inch. Hopefully whatever snow comes in the next 24 hours is the last for the season and I can start driving this every day!

New rear deck speakers & Dynamat came in from Amazon yesterday, so I will be taking care of that this weekend. Also will be doing plugs, cap, rotor, wires. Really love driving this again! Here is a little video of my driveway, with the soundtrack furnished by Pypes off roda X-pipe, Pypes 2 1/2" exhaust, and Pypes Violator lers. Just idling, holding at about 1500, then 2500, and goosing it a few times. Music to my ears!

Need some opinions on wheels.

Chrome with black inside?
X

Black with highly polished lip?

X

Both 17" 4 lug. Not going to go for the 5 lug conversion yet. Want to do wheels/tires and get the interior squared away, then maybe 5 lug somewhere down the road.

And a reminder of the color scheme.

The black ones....the top wheels are butt ugly and then some. If you get the black ones, get the 17x9 and 17x10. I had those same wheels on the Sport (in anthracite color). Nice looking wheels, and I actually kind of miss them.

I was leaning towards the black. I'm thinking 17 x 9 all around. I'm not going to go crazy with horsepower, and I like being able to rotate my tires. Maybe when I go 5 lug I'll change my mind on the HP and wides in the back. Here's what I was looking at. Complete package, with tires, mounted and balanced, free shipping.

They have cheaper and more expensive options with other tires.

Thanks for the input everyone!

What I didn't like about 17x9's all the way around with these, is that the 17x9 wheels have no depth, and it just doesn't look right on the rear. Looks like 4 front wheels. If you want to rotate them, get 14.6 wheels with whitewalls. Come on, Man........if you're buying new wheels, Get those fat ones for the back. It's not much more expensive, and if you want your car to rumble, give it the looks to back it up.....just sayin'.
Title: Project - The Bat in The Cat
Post by: CougrrrFiveO on March 22, 2014, 09:51:47 AM
I get what you're saying Vinnie, but it's all personal preference. When I see deeper wheels on the back it makes me think the car is meant for straight line only. I've had cars set up like that over the years and always felt the handling was better when you have thick but equal tires all the way around. The Cougar is pretty much a daily driver (as long as the snow is done for the year) so I want to be able to rotate my tires and get as much life as possible out of them. We have plenty of new Mustangs at the dealership with wider wheels in the back (from the factory) and they handle fine, I'm probably just stubborn from past experiences. Hell, I'm still thinking about just getting new tires for the turbines I have on there and adding some black to them. Also, my tastes seem to be different than most. I really don't like slammed cars with the biggest tire possible stuffed in the fenders. I look at that and think "how the hell am I going to pull in my driveway without sing?" and "tires probably rub on tight turns and on bumps". If I was going to only drive the car occasionally, and only when there was no hint of moisture in the air, it would be a different story. I use this to go to work, go to the store, take the kids to school, take a spur of the moment trip to the Jersey s, etc. My main reason for going to 17" wheels would be for getting bigger brakes. In MY perfect world, I would have custom turbines made, 5 lug, 17" with the recessed areas being black. Too bad I'm not rich!

Because everybody has it now. Good thing its become popular ;)
How wide are you going in the front? I remember that front cant handle very wide stuff, you dont want like 255's on a 10" wide rim, that looks retarded.
Rear I fitted 315's on 10.5" rims without trouble.

The package I linked is 17 x 9 all around with 245/45R17's. But again, I'm not positive on doing that yet.

A good friend of mine texted me yesterday and let me know that he saw an 88 XR7 at a U-Pull-It in NJ. I was able to get there this morning and get the marker light I needed. Of all the front lights on that XR7, the ONLY one that was not damaged was the one I needed! Really lucked out on that! Also picked up a console that is in better shape than the one I have in my car, and a bunch of interior trim pieces to hang onto just in case. Weirdest part is, this XR7 was in the EXACT same spot as the one I pulled my 8.8 out of many, many years ago. Same color too. Had a real Deja Vu moment when I saw it.

Yeah, that's what I am thinking. I played around in photoshop at home over the weekend and I just didn't like the wheels all the way blacked out. Just blacking them like I showed above makes them look stock. I'm happy with that. It was too rainy all weekend to do anything with them though. Hopefully I'll get them done this week sometime.

I also stripped everything off the console I got at the junkyard, cleaned it, and got it ready for paint, AND my new switch decals came in the mail on Saturday so hopefully I will have a new looking console by the end of the week!

Couple of pics of the Pypes exhaust with the tailpipes lengthened and welded to end where they "should".

Kind of a bad angle on that last pic. Pipes do not extend past the end of the bumper at all.

Haven't posted in what... 2 years? The car did finally get "done", even though I still have plenty to do. As many of you know, this is a car my dad bought new and then gave to me in 96 because he knew I always loved it. Many time over the years I thought of getting rid of it because it's "not practical". I'm glad I didn't and glad I got it painted. My dad passed away in March of 2015, but he did get quite a few rides in the Cougar after it was done. I drove him to dialysis in it quite a few times, and those were the times he really smiled on the way. My mom thought I "ruined" the car and made it too loud, but my dad thought it sounded perfect! He loved the growl!

Anyway, just want to post an update and a few pics (many of you have seen them on Facebook already). Also want to say thanks to everyone that has helped along the way with info, advice, parts, etc. Eric (right from the beginning in the 90's), Vinnie, Chuck, David, and many many more. Thanks guys!

And yes, there are still plenty of things to do. Recover the seats in a color that matches the interior, and plenty of tweaks and adjustments to make.
