Title: question about this job posting on monster
Post by: jcassity on March 04, 2005, 11:29:13 AM
strolling through the daily events of job hunting,
i came across this job and got curious of its content.

Is this statement legal?
""""Requires some overnight travel (paid expenses). Very active job requiring applicant to be in good physical condition. Requires climbing high ladders, lifting 25-50 lbs, and extensive walking. Excellent driving record a must. We screen for illegal drugs, criminal background, and driving records points. The company has policies that reflect a ZERO tolerance for illegal drugs, alcohol, and tobacco products. """"

It depends....If part of the job requirement entails strenous physical activity and the employer can show that this is indeed true then  yes due to the fact that someone not in good physical condition may not be able to perform the tasks required.  It almost sounds like they may even have some sort of physical testing involved.  You raised my curiosity....What kind of employment is this and is there a link to a sight or anything like that?

C'mon Scott you know tobacco is disgusting!  I don't know about anywere else but its like illegal to smoke in most places in ohio it seems.  If you would be in primarily public places then maybe thats what they are getting at.

It's wierd how smoking is so looked down upon that it has become socially unacceptable, but drinking and driving (which kills a lot more people than cigarettes) is still not a big deal.  People have a choice to start smoking... a car with a family in it does not have the choice of sharing the road with a drunk in a big beat up truck who will, in turn, hit thier car, killing all of them but come out fine himself because of this drunkenness.

/Rant

And yeah, I think they can tell you not to smoke.

You have what i have,, and there is the link to the company in the moster posting.

I personally think they are not allowed to.  Their posting says zero tollerance for tobacco products via a drug test.  Kinda makes basic ultra lights in the box illegal.

Now... do they mean on the job?  Or at all?  This reminds me of the company firing those who smoke.  I guess smoking does go against the values of a company called "Kleen Air" but still...

you got that right,, no bout a doubt it :giggle:

anyway, i just called about the job.  Im pretty sure ill see that posting re-worded a little.

what have i done to stop smoking,,,
started with salem menthol in 88. bad choice
moved to marlboro reds
moved to ultralight cheapest brand
moved to viginia slims,,,im secure with my manhood so dont laugh :flip:
now im smoking a brand made in the Grover NC called Cheyenne
Cheyenne Peach flavored little cigars as well as others
*.79cents a pack
*no nicotine
*flavored
*has a plesent smell left behind like popori or insense
*predominatly natural tobacco with no additive.

next step,, maybe stop or just smoke a pipe when i get to be an old giezer

why?
ive noticed smoking these that i tend to have a "nic" fit if i dont have a regular cig sooner or later.  I keep a pack of ultra lights laying around so i can slowly work my way off nicotine.

It really depends on your state of mind as much as anything else.  If you want to quit smoking then you can quit smoking.  Most people try five to seven times before they are actually able to quit.  The key is never to become dependent upon the nicotine in the first place.  I can smoke one with my sister-in-law every once in a while and it doesn't bother me at all.

True.  I don't like drunk drivers anymore than I like smoking.  I don't dislike "smokers" I just don't like the smoke itself.  It honestly flares my allergys up.  When the guys at work start to smoke I have to stay away from them or I will get sick.  Some days I can smoke a mini cigar and other days it makes me sick.  :disappoin

Number one thing is being around people who would rather buy a pack of ciggerettes or beer than buy gas or milk.  That really ticks me off.  I only buy beer if I have waaayy more than enough money to get through to the next check.  And then I usualy don't buy it!

Scott, nicotine isn't a natural ingredient in Tobacco?  Wow... I DID not know that.  Even those little cigars make me nervous, though... "predominantly natural tobacco with some non-tobacco ingredients added."  Did you have the dreaded blood cough while smoking Menthols?  I've never experienced it in all my smoking experience (probably a total of 2 cartons in my life, as far as menthols go) but I managed to quit smoking all together before it became too hard to quit.

Omg scott I hate it even more now.  Wow we have stumbled on such a controversial (sp) subject here.  I wonder if your peach cigars are really free of the junk they add in.  With all the secrecy what would keep them from just lying?

I'd be interested to know what the "non-tobacco" ingredients are.

Just grow your own in the back yard.  Hang it, dry it, crush it, roll it, and viola!  All-natural tobacco.  That's about the only way to insure there are no additives.  You'd probably come out cheaper in the long run too.

Seriously though, there are so many things that can kill you.  People who live in houses where wood smoke is present have a higher cancer rate.  I even read an article a few weeks ago talking about how the incense in churches can cause cancer.  I have nothing at all against smokers and the smoke doesn't bother me.  I can't stand it when people talk about how someone shouldn't be able to smoke here or there, etc.  Chaps my ass that they think they are so high and mighty just because they don't smoke.  Hell, they could get hit by a car and die tomorrow and that other person could smoke until they're 97.

Society is so politically correct now that you can't fart sideways without a permit.  People have less and less real things to worry about because the standard of living is so high today.  So they have to fabricate things to worry about.  Yep, there is some major ass chapping going on here.

in utah you cant even buy cigirettes until you are 19. You cant smoke in public(only down town though) and you can smoke when your 18 but your not allowed to have more then 3 on you. Around here you can buy tobacco leaves in the smoke shops and roll your own. I guess that really is what cig papper is for.

... I smoke ciggs, so what.  I've smoked crack too... if you could give me pcp right now, i'd probably dip it in my NEWPORT and smoke it too!  It's called an oral fixation.  It's a subject i'd love to argue but it's not worth it.  And claude, you shouldn't have kept talking...  And i quote:

"Number one thing is being around people who would rather buy a pack of ciggerettes or beer than buy gas or milk. That really ticks me off. I only buy beer if I have waaayy more than enough money to get through to the next check. And then I usualy don't buy it!"

I'm constantly dealing with habits and addiction, it's a DISEASE!  It's not a matter of opinion, it's a matter of ability.  Don't tell a smoker to stop because it's bad, help them quit because it's better.  I've been there, and done that, in general i know i'm sorta that way, I have no gas, cause i spent $3.21 for a pack of newports and now i can't go get ciggs cause i ain't got gas.

I quit my job at Autozone, so now i ain't got the money for it, but as soon as i do i'm getting more ciggs.  I can't help that my addiction has control over me, i honestly don't want help.  But in general yeah, it's $5 bucks a joint so why not smoke 20 or 40 ciggs if buy one get one free;

Unstead.... i'm trying my best not to do drugs now cause i just got outta jail.  And f*ck the beer, it's straight for the bacardi...  I only wish i could offer a better me to those who care.  If not then maybe i should change.  But i do see why it's an important subject, however it's not the only one to think about.  Life is short, could be shorter if i smoke, but right now, i just turned 19.  If i wasn't so  stupid i'd probably never have started.

I didn't mean you can't talk though, i respect your opinion, but really it's not that bad.  If i was at work and smoke bothered you then i'm sorry, but in your car i REALLY did try to respect your opinion on the issue.  I hope you don't think i'm a low life, cause i get that from alot of my friends lately... You'd be surprised what kinda reaction people take towards what you do.  IMHO, it's personal what i do, don't just judge me for actions, listed to the voice behind the ciggerette.  It could be something more than a smoking habit.
