Title: Passports?
Post by: cougarXLS on April 02, 2008, 11:30:05 AM
Question,

Does anyone know for fact if a Canadian needs a passport to drive accross to the American border?

I have been hearing about changes in legislation or proposed legislation that may (or do) require drivers to show their passports.
I was always under the impression that two pieces of photo ID (driver's license and student card, in my example) were sufficient to cross the border, but it's been a handful of years since I last crossed.

Anybody know for fact?

From what I understand, yes from what i've heard on the radio
NY also needs a passport starting next year unless you have a new enhanced license to replace the passport.

I'm not sure if new canadien licenses have the same info as our new ones. I'm sure they will tell you online what you need to cross the ditch.

Yeah, I am sure they do somewhere, just have to find it.  I figure I'd start asking here anyways.

But yeah, I think I do need one...

Hrrmmmmm....I know that U.S. citizens going to Canada are okay this year if travelling by land or sea, but in 2009 will need to have a new passport card. As of right now, flying into Canada from the U.S. requires a full passport. Info on that is here (http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html).

But to find out the opposite you will have to check with an official Canadian government office to find out the criteria. I would definitely not go by hearsay.

EDIT: Found some info here (http://ezinearticles.com/?Canadian-Passport-Requirements---Ensure-That-You-Can-Travel-to-the-USA-on-Time&id=810545). And here (http://www.vision2000.ca/website/Travel-Links/Canadian-Passport-Regulations.html).

Looks like you're gonna need a passport...better get hopping on that now...
I'll put a note on the site about that ASAP.

Canada DRIVING to US.. does not need a passport till 2009.. Living close to the border I know this for a fact.

and about the new licenses, i have the old one.. and my sister has the new one.. the people at the border didn't really know what the heck to do with the new license, they thought it was fake.. so since it's so new, it's kinda pointless.

Thank-you to everyone, and thank-you Eric (glad you're stickin' around :), those links were handy)

I have found a site through the Government of Canada which states, The new document requirements were implemented for air travel to or through the United States in January 2007. Final document requirements for those seeking to enter the United States at land or water ports of entry will take effect June 1, 2009. (http://"http://cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/whti-ivho/menu-eng.html")

So, I am just fine for CatJam this year. I'll be getting my passport anyways, as the clock apparently runs out June 01/2009

Thanks everyone!

Oh and here's some particulars about a Canadian crossing by land other Canadians here may find useful. http://cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/whti-ivho/land-terrestre-eng.html

**** EDIT: Just to let Canadians know, with a simple yes or no..... the question of whether or not you need a passport to attend CatJam 2008 is NO! You do NOT need a passport to either cross into the United States or to return to Canada! Information on this can be found in both Eric's links and my own. I have received confirmation of this after contacting, directly, the CBSA. Canadians entering the US via LAND CROSSING (aka. DRIVING) will NOT need a passport for the summer of 2008. You WILL need a passport in time for CatJam 2009!!!!!!!!!!

My Cougar will probably not be in any kind of shape to drive all the way to Cat Jam this year. But that doesn't mean I can't drive my truck, right? Anyway, I'm really crossing my fingers that I get to come this year!

I really miss you guys. *cries* LOL
