Title: Well that didn't go as planned...
Post by: P71 on March 22, 2008, 01:21:08 AM
Stupid track was WAY too sticky...
First pass out went a 16.512@81.95 with a 2.3 60' (2 tenths and 2 MPH better then previous best, no changes). Drove around and went again immediately to a 16.63@81.5. Everything was perfect and the lanes were clear (there was maybe a dozen cars there) so I pulled up to do a third run in a row. Did my burnout, staged, launched from 7500RPM's...
...and snapped the new rear u-joint clean in two, and the driveshaft banged the ground and broke one of the collars off. :toilet: SUCK! So I wasted a good 30+ run night 10 minutes in! Got a guy to tow strap me to the Burger King outside the track (after pulling the driveshaft out), then called the insurance. :hick: Had it towed to a family members house in Vancouver and my neighbor came down to rescue me.
Hitching a ride back down tomorrow with my tow straps to get it home, but we're going to try the driveline shop in Vancouver first.
The track better be this good tomorrow for the P71!!!!:burnout:

Sorry to hear that man i wish you would of at least got a 10+ run night and got to watch a lot of races and not worry about your RX-7 what do you think the P71 might run?

It's going to run 14's, if the track stays this sticky I might eek a 14.6-14.7 out of her. She already traps 82-83 in 1/8 and 93 in the 1/4.

The stock 12A redlines at 8700, so 7500 is "light" :hick:
It's weird because the guy I bought it from replaced the u-joint. The u-joint itself broke clean in two at the main body, almost like it was defective?

I hope your taking the plates off or at least covering them up. The insurance companies love touring the pits and gates gathering plate and VIN numbers. Those notice of cancelations aren't fun anymore as they become public records for all insurance companies.

It's not illegal to drag race at a legal venue. My insurance agent is a NHRA Super Gas competitor. The tow truck just didn't want to pay the gate to get in the track!

It has nothing to do with being legal or illegal. It is the fact that they are covering a vehicle that is used in speed competions or at a race venue. Check the fine print of your policy, it's one of the reasons they use for cancelation at anytime. Oh and google is one of the insurnce companies best friends too. Especially if there is an event that list the names of the competitors online.

Nothing race dedicated about it. tossel rotaries only have 3 moving parts, they rev very, very, very high. It has nothing in common with a piston engine.

UPDATE:
I am the luckiest son of a...
I brought the broken driveshaft to I-5 Driveline in Vancouver, WA. He took one look at it and showed me that they were non-serviceable u-joints. So the "new" u-joint wasn't new at all! Just so happened to have a first Gen RX-7 driveshaft sitting there in the shop (that's the lucky part). He put new Spicer u-joints in it, cleaned it, trued it, balanced it, painted it, and sent me on my way in under an hour for a very, very competitive price (cheaper then the quotes I've been getting for a used one shipped).
So the car is home, and now I'm trying to figure out how to get a Summit universal driveshaft loop in it (since I already have one).
I do have to say that I-5 treated me very, very well, and on the Saturday before Easter at that. Couldn't ask for an easier fix to my breakage!

Health insurance companieis will ding you for private venue racing too if they find out. You get hurt on a race track and you're not covered by a lot of policies.

How the hell did you get enough torque out of a rotary to break a U-joint?

Grip + high revs is my guess. That and a junk u-joint.

This one too...
Rotaries are cool, BTW - ever seen a rotary snowmobile or chainsaw?

No, but I saw one of those wacky FWD German rotary sedans with the dual carbs. That was neat!
I'll take some rotary snowmobile goodness though... :hick:

They made 'em. I forget who made the machines (back in the late 60's and early 70's there were dozens upon dozens of snomobile manufacturers, including John Deere, Evenrude, Harley Davidson, etc) but I think the engines were made by Sachs. Back when I had several early 70's snowmobiles (two '74 Olympiques, three mid 70's SkiRoules, and an Arctic Cat Cheetah) I had a universal snowmobile manual that detailed the tossels. Magic spinny triangles FTW!

I've never heard of a health insurance company denying a claim because the accident was received while "racing". Life insurance is a different story.
