Maybe it's because nobody loves them like we do. It's hard to sell a car that takes $65 to fill the tank these days. At least we get first dibs on them.

Not a bad deal it takes that much to fill the car up means you can pass lots of people that had to fill up their small gas tanks and for the price of most of our cars you can afford to fill up the tank at almost any price.

I had the nicest 80s T-Bird in a town of over 200,000 people and since its wrecked if i get a  80s cougar it will be the nicest in the whole town when its all put together Because everyone in Texas has a mustang and a truck well almost.

Can you explain this jumble of shiznit to me?
I think something that gets 35 mpg will more than outlast something that gets 12-15 mpg.

It ain't a matter of passing people. When gas is 3.10 a gallon like it is here, it doesn't matter one  bit what you paid for a vehicle, it sucks all around.

That might be true... if these cars were fast. Fact is, they're not. Not even close. The slowest car available for sale nowadays would probably run rings around an 80's T-Bird and still get 35-40 MPG while doing it.

These cars are about style. They can be made fast, yes, but style is their main selling point. Problem is that their style doesn't jive with most young people. Yes, I know, this board has several under-20 members, but most people under 20 years old would rather be in a Civic with a fart can and an aluminum extension ladder bolted to the trunk pretending to be a spoiler. Most young people driving a T-Bird or Cougar do so because they're "stuck with it" - it was willed to them, or given to them by a family member, or they bought it for a few hundred bucks as a first car. Many end up growing to love their old, slow-but-pretty American iron, but most end up resenting the car because it isn't "trendy" and selling it to us nut cases that actually like them so they can buy a Civic just like their buddies.

I've said it before: These cars are actually victims of their own styling. They look great, yes, but people that actually want old cars want cars that look old. They don't want a 20+ year old "classic" that looks like a late 90's car but performs like an early 80's one.

I think you're really pretty spot-on about that, at least from the old-car hobby's perspective anyhow.

80's is, unfortunately, GM-territory for that. Yeah it wasn't great that everything was shaped like a Kleenex box but that was norm. So....in the future they'll be popular at shows...and for ours...who knows.

More thundrcatz fer us!!!!! Personally I want to get a low-mileage completely unmolested one someday to keep exactly stock and be able to show when its 30 40 years old as an original survivor with low usage, so I hope they stay worthless! :hick:

Hey I bought mine because I WANTED it! And I was 21 at the time. Close enough :p

Honestly, for younger kids, it's all about looking cool. They want to be in a Mustang, or a Civic, or an old hot rod (which most can't get). I know when I was in high school I fantasized about driving to school in this primer black 55 Chevy that was for sale locally. Steelies, big wide tires in the back, small block chev with dual four barrels, harnesses, all that . That would have been the shiznit! But I couldn't afford it, nor anything else cool, and ended up in a '90 2.3L Mustang.

And now my old bird is getting pretty rough looking but I still love it. I  love the swoopy lines of the car, especially lowered!

Post by: GrannysBird on March 20, 2008, 09:32:51 AM
So am I one of those exceptions because after my car was willed to me I kept it and drove it as my first car, well at least till the car put up the white smoke  of surrender and wouldn't go no mores..

Fast forward to 4 years later I still have it, and have replaced everything in the car from under hood to the rear end. I've removed all of the rust and painted it (well the underside at least). And in a few months (crosses fingers) I should have it running 13's, 12's with spray:burnout: .

I can honestly attest that younger people like these cars (at least tbirds that is) from personal experience. I know I love my car and all of my friends do as well since it's something they remember seeing when they first became aware of cars. Most people selling these cars simply don't know what they've got, even if they aren't the fastest cars  stock the fact that you can get 37mpg (personal best w/ v6 and 2.73s) makes them worth keeping.

Like I said: There are exceptions, and of course if you're gonna find exceptions you're gonna find 'em here, on a board dedicated to the cars ;) Most young people look down on these cars with about the same level of love that most of us show for riced up mid 90's Civics. Go find a ricer board and post pics of your T-Bird or Cougar and you'll see what I mean. The sad fact, though, is that we are severely outnumbered. Which is fine by me - I like it that way.

The ironic twist to what I said about these cars' modern looks working against them, is that when I first fell in love it was because they looked so modern. When I bought my '85 (back in '92) I couldn't believe that I could actually afford a car that looked so "new". The even more ironic twist is that I sold a near-mint '80 Formula Firebird so I could buy this "new-looking" car. That same Firebird would now be worth about 5X what you could get for a Fox Bird...

Of course, then you have the real nutty ones, like us, who are raising our kids with a love of these cars.
5 out of 5 of our children want a Cat or Bird as their first car.... how cool are we?  :rollin:

BTW, my kids also listen to 'our' music..... so do their friends.... oh and one of their friends just bought a 95 Cougar because it looks similar to ours and he loves ours. When he got the chance, he jumped at it, so we might have a tag along for Cat Jam this year.

I don't really have any special love for any of them.  I just like them I guess.  I also like it because I know so much about the  things I can tell what the hell the weird noise is when I'm 400+ miles away from home.

Don't ask my girlfriend if I love the car.  Lies I tell you!  LIES!

We were all new once, and we are all still here.
Tbirdsps is a good example of a new addition..

As with most "statistic's" you can get whatever you want.
If "Most people show up and then sell there bird's" is what you want to see.. then that is what you will see..

it's a matter of perception

It could also be that  his site is easier to find now on a web search as well.  There were plenty of those kids around 5 years ago.  Around here there were probably more than there are now.  I haven't seen a fox catbird for sale around me--or even in the want ads--for months.  The only one was the guy with the black '87 who posts here once in a while.  Before that it was nothin' for a good 5 months...

No BMW isnt rice, I just HATE the BUTT ugly things they create. Theres only a few i would own.
I would much rather have an American car. Only lux cars I would DIE to have are the porsche SUV in the s package, and the land rover range rover HSE supercharged.

Imports of ANY country of origin ricer or not get lumped all into the same bag which is labeled " i wouldnt drive if someone paid me to drive it". NOT defending this position, just rationalizing it. THis is the way i look at it as well, i would die for a 95 M5 but then i would just end up turning it into a Mafia Sentinel (From GTA3). I loved my cougar since i was 5 when i was 5 I said Grandma when can i drive that, fast foward 14 - 15 years and I was. I should be again soon too i got a decent job so i can get the stuff repaired that needs be.

I haven't seen a lot of new people selling cars. It's more, people that have a problem to fix. once they get it fixed it seems you never see them again until there's another problem.

As for me and my cougar. I sold a mint 78 monarch with 60,000 miles on it.  I saw an 87 driving around and said I wanted it. The body lines and curves were something that most other cars didn't have. (I call that style) and today I still think of it the same way. It's still has what other cars lack.
My 03 monty is a lightning bolt compared to our cars. but after you sit in one, you beg to get out. It's more uncomfortable than a pair of FILA shoes.
My wife even says, "there's nothing like the ride in a cougar. you never realize that you're going that fast, until you look down."

The "non trendy" image of these cars is EXACTLY what I LOVE taking advantage of.  Sittin at a light next to a kid in a Civic with a fart can, 22in wheels, body kit, huge bolt on wing, with his hat on backwards and a smug look on his face, and his girlfriend in the passenger seat...tryin to look cool in front of her by whoopin what looks like a high 16sec 80s car...oh wait...look...that 80s car is haulin his ass down the road...TOOL.

I'm not a flashy kinda person.  I don't draw attention to myself.  Even in high school, I NEVER followed the "cool" trends.  I guess my car tends to reflect that.

Oh, and I mostly listen to "my parents'" music as well.  Classic rock or bust.

That's why I inserted the second bit "even rational...". I dont claim to be THAT either. And I'm not saying import = rice...just that all of em I lump together in MY own group of everything I would not want to own.

@ TC bombardier SHOULD make cars LOL. All I know is they got some good engine tech. My friend's snowmobiles have that R.A.V.E. stuff. Yeah git that in some cars!!! Suck it VTEC!

I would say that these cars are very flashy. Go look at a 83-88 anything out there and tell me these cars don't stand out. Also, the back window in a cougar is a fashion statement. Its supposed to either piss you off or make you like it. People that don't like the back window get a t-bird. People that do get a cougar.

An import car makes alot more sense now. I drive almost 3,000 miles a month. I go through two to three 300 mile $30 tanks a week in my wife's little neon. Now I'm gonna pay $65 to drive around a t-bird for around half of that a tank.

...Except bombardier snowmobiles use Rotax (Austrian, I believe) engines :D *EDIT* Apparently Rotax is owned by Bombardier. Still Austrian though :hick:

...and RAVE is only good for two-strokes, which would never, ever, EVER pass emissions standards. I think you'll soon see two-strokes outlawed in snowmobiles, dirt bikes, ATV's and outboards...

That RAVE shiznit was crazy, though - my Formula Mach Triple had it, and it was crazy fast. Never quite understood how it works (I'm more of an early 70's Olympique kinda guy) but when it did whatever it does it was like hitting a nitrous button. That machine was retarded fast.

Ya don't need an import to get good fuel economy. Yes, that news might make an import fan faint, but it's true. My Saturn regularly gets 40MPG on the highway and better than 30 city, and that's with A/C.

My 76 Olympique was just plain retarded (not fast, lol)  It was my only mode of transportation at one time though.  My Saturn does pretty decent on gas too.  I also have a good supply of paper bags and a hole punch for my driving excursions.

i think people come to this site to sell cars cus thats where the consumers are. people see that a group of people who regularly are on the hunt for thundercats and they know odds are good that thier car will sell. just like when you see anti-derpressant comercials on lifetime, truck and dirtbike adds on CMT, KFC sponsors on BET (i may be too stereotypical, but u get the idea) cus thats where the people who buy the products are. besides, when some stupid kid inherits his grandmas mint condition 30th anny tbird and doesnt want it cus its 'not a civic' sells it here for $1000, whos going to be complaining then.

i see the title, scroll to the end, and read about snowmobiles.

See Im sorta like that, but I like odd cars and such, for the reason that it draws attention. I see shiznit box ricers all day long and so does everyone else. Same with mustangs/camaros. Only thing that draws people is loud. I get attention every time I start my car(mostly pissed neighbors.) my friends think my car is ugly, but that makes me love it more. Its different, much like i am, same as most of the cars I like. Theres very few newer cars that I would give anything to own, TONS of older cars I would though.
And i listen to everything but opera/classical.
Classic rock kicks asssss though!
