I have a 1985 Cougar that's going downhill fast. It has a replaced V8 engine that is still in excellent condition, but the tranny is going out along with the dash lights and the heater core is shot. I am looking to sell the engine. I am wondering what kind of price I could get for the engine and would it be better to sell the engine with the car, or sell the engine alone and s the rest of the car. Thanks for any input or suggestions.
HO or SO?
woah woah woah, before you go around yelling ska sucks you should at least put maybe an against all athourity picture up or something. Unless you really do think it does. Then you can leave.
Hey Baxo. What on eartth are you talking about? Forgive me, but I'm clueless.....ska?
he's talking about the guy's username. skasucks478. ska is a genre of music. kinda punk rock-ish. i suppose he really likes his ska. ^_^
ska is kinda like punk......its where the bass plays lead and the guitar is only for back up. the guitar is usally higher simple chords(not full cords, I guess they could be power chords)played fast , kinda cheery, aswell as loud and offensive. the chords are always struck upwards, with muted downstrokes, and is really simple. Its also can be played with horns, such as trumpets.
Guitar is only backup? That sucks. But not as much as Klingon Opera. :hick:
Now, back to CAR related stuff.........
Is this a music message board or what? What about the price of the engine? Looking to possibly get a new engine for my '86 5.0...
id expect to pay 300 too 500 for a god running decent condition 5.0 HO from the street or a little more from the JY (they are s in my area) and thats if they have them. most of the fox stuff has fallen off of the rader in the salvage yards in my area.
for an SO id say no more than 300
if the engine has been recently rebuilt, depending if there is proof and if it was done professionally, up to maybe 100 for a 5.0 HO. me, no more than 700.
anything upgraded or modified is a little tougher. cost will depend on the mods obviously. on the outside you can see what you are getting but you never know whats on the inside or how the engine was used. it helps too find one thats still in a car and can be heard cold started and run as specially at operating temp....
SKA: You could most likely get around 500 or so for the motor, perhaps more depending on where you live. If you could tell us a little more about the car the motor is in it would be easier to give you a ball park figure on that as well.
SeaneF26: Do you mean Factory new, refubished new or just new as in different from the one you have now?
wtf? I don't even think i posted anyhthign about ska, ever, LOL I'm pretty sure you meant Haystack :D .. it's ok.. common mistake.. Baxo and Haystack sound almost the same.
Realized that. That's what a 14 hour day of work does right after you've had 3 hours sleep :brick: :dunce:
hahah dude.. I feel your pain.. I know lack of sleep, doing a double shift with college in the morning all too well.
Paul - I'm thinking a refurbished one or low mileage used one. I have a lot of steam coming out of my oil filler. Think the piston rings are shot. Instead of putting more money into this engine, might as well just replace it. Don't want to spend a ton on it, tho. If I can get an engine that will give me a couple good years that's fine. Have any recommendations?
these prices are about the going rates for rebuilt motors:

Scroll down and you'll notice that the HO is actually a almost identical in price tothe SO (VIN cod E/T as opposed to F). The higher priced SO shown is a propane setup.
cool resource Paul, have you ever done bussiness with these people before and do you know if those prices are oil pan to intake?
Nope never done business with em. Apparently It's your basic Longblock setup though. I'm guessing intake not included. Oil pan usually is in most longblocks though.
that's fine, I've already got an intake for a 351 anyway, I was just looking for parts to sell to offset the price, I actually wish they'd just sell the block to really bring the price down, but we all know that aint gonna happen
If you don't wanna go rebuilt - Ford Racing makes some pretty nice new ones. http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts/part_details.asp?PartKeyField=27 If all goes according to plan, I should have this one before summer......but were not even talking about that. If you wanna get as much $$ as you can for it - try selling it on ebay (motor only) and set the reserve high.
you could probley sell the entire car for 500, iv seen alot worse go for more before.
I have the stock SO less waterpump and timing cover that was running pretty good, no nocks but a little smoke, I think the valve seals are tired and probably rings a little it had 160k on it, Im throwing in an 88 Mustang HO SD computer (DA1), HO Upper and lower intake, and HO cam, lifters and time chain with 20k on them, stock HO headers and the engine stand it is sitting on for 250.00. Come get it in Pensa Cola FL area.
