Title: WTF? anybody hear of this firing order?
Post by: 1WLD BRD on March 05, 2008, 08:01:42 PM
1-5-4-3-7-2-6-8....
that is the firing order on the motor in my '88 Cougar XR-7..  it has the stock 302 in it, which the firing order SHOULD be 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8...  but that doesnt work on it...  could it be an aftermarket cam withthe 6-7 swap on it?

I have only owned Fords so yah I know how ford numbers there cylinders in motors.

Trust me, the proper firing order doesnt work on this motor, SO or HO firing order....

FE's/221-302 and 429/460:  1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8
351W/351C/M/400:  1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8

I thought I read about a cam that changed two cylinders, but I can't remember from where.  Maybe try a search in google or something?  Or have ya already tried that?

I bet it's firing on the SO order but you have the 2 and 3 wires mixed up from the plugs to the distributer. No one makes a cam that changes the SO 302 roller cam firing order. The only cam that has a swap firing order is for a BB Chevy. You're cam HAS to have the stock SO firing order........

I don't usually read Hot Rod. Not much useful info if you don't have a Chevy V8 ;)

I highly doubt that your XR7 has had a cam swap. I bet the distributor is off.....

haha, NVM guys...  I just relized I had a brain fart...  it is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8.  I just forgot #1 is on the passenger side, and I had to move the distributor 1 cylinder off to make it #1 to clear the Cobra intake...  Have a lot on my mind lately...  sorry.. :(  LOL

put a polished cobra intake on yours and you will see.  the TFI module hits it, and since I couldnt get the distibutor to line up with the oil pump and cam teeth in the proper location, I just moved all the wires over one spot.  Works fine for now...  now that I am laid off and have some time on my hand I will pull the dissy and try it again...

they make remote mounted tfi modules in the newer cougars.  I googled a search for one, and found this one to explain:  http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/remote_tfi.htm
