1. My 88 T-bird to Hellsing73 (didn't need the money, just didn't drive it anymore and wanted it to go to a good home, now it's totaled, owned the car for 18 years)
2. 1970 Superbee (sold it for $1500 back in 1985, needed the money)
3. 1971 cuda' 340 (traded for 1978 chevy shortbed back in 1986 )
4. 1970 AAR cuda (I think I sold this car for $1200 and a pontiac J2000 back in 1987)
5. 1978 Chevy shortbed 4x4 lifted with 38's (blew the 350 and sold it cheap)
6. 1984 Porsche 928 (drove like a slot car, but needed the money)
Anyone else?
Greg
Oh dear, you could have retired with a couple of those cars.
Rarest I sold was an 86 SVO. Wish I still had the 67 Fastback.
Here's a couple I wished we would never have sold
1985 Cougar LS (midnight regatta blue)
and my 1969 El Camino
I've only had one other car myself before my cougar.
78 Mercury Monarch.
I was going to store it in my grandmothers garage after I bought my cougar, but at the last minute decided to sell it.
Sold it for $2500 with about 60,000 miles on it.
Sold it to a 19 year old kid, mint condition, not a speck of rust anywhere, mirror black finish.
Saw it a month after I sold it in a bar parking lot with broken antenna, broken window, scratches and dents everywhere.
Thats when I knew I made a big mistake by selling it.
I also had 50/50 power seats from a Riviera in it.
So far, this is the only pic I can find of it.
I regret selling a few:
My first car, a '78 Trans Am. 1970 LT1 350 in it, WS6 suspension. Rear quarters rusted all to hell, interior trashed, but it was fast as hell and I loved it. Bought for $600, sold for $1300, now I see cars in worse shape going for $5k
My second car, a '66 Galaxie 500. Four-door hardtop with the 390/4V and automatic. This car was beautiful and nearly mint but I couldn't afford to drive it (the first gulf war was on and gas was too expensive).
My '87 Sport. Of all of the Fox Birdcats I'd owned, this was and is still my favourite. Stupid rust. I've been trying to give the '88, which is in much better shape and lower mileage, the spirit of the '87, but it hasn't happened yet.
My first brand new vehicle I ever bought; a red 1993 F-150 Lighting.
I sold it so that I could have a good down payment on my house.
I sure miss that truck. I had another set of 17x8 wheels with 245/45 BFG R1's on them and I used to take it to track events at Grattan, Gingerman & Road America. With with the race tires on it, I could easily run better lap times than the showroom stock prepared Mustangs. It was 2-1/2 tons of fun.

:cougarsmily:
Being only 27 and only having owned 4 cars, I don't have much to regret selling.
The only car I've gotten rid of so far was my '90 2.3L Mustang...which I honestly hated to sell, but it was turning into a rusty hulk and I couldn't get it to start. Sold it for $100 back in 2005.
I'm gonna get rid of my Tempo after this winter probably, and I think I'll be glad to see it go.
There's a few :(
1986 Mazda RX7, Dark Blue, 5-Speed, rebuilt rotary (n/a), ran 13.7's in the 1/4 with a bad 3rd gear synchro. I miss this car the most by far.
1983 Turbo Coupe, the Silver one in the banner, luckily it went to a really good person (who's on here) and they really did the car up right.
1988 Cougar LS 5.0, I saved it from the crusher, got it nice looking and driving, and then sold it to a young couple who seemed really enamored with it. That was 2.5 years ago, I saw it last weekend abandoned on the highway with all of the windows busted out.
And the one that "got away", a 1978 Spirit AMX, 304/4-Speed. I looked at it when I was 16 with my dad, I put a deposit on it, and we went back the next morning with a car trailer to pick it up. sold it out from under me for $100 more overnight.
Cars I DON'T regret selling: Layla, the SHO, 85 Mustang/289 swap, both Nissan trucks.
I'm still on my first car. Hopin to never sell it so I never have to write one of these lists :) .
At one point or another I have regretted selling most of the cars I've owned. But every car has things to love. Well maybe not EVERY car. I definately had no love for any of the GMs I've owned, but those are the ones I don't regret getting rid of. :D
my 49 willys
my 84 cougar to 1 WLD BRD cuz he crushed it!!
1969 GTO
I often wish I could have that car back.
My @#$%#$ing 83 Cougar LS
But I filled the void.
:disappoin very sorry for your loss. :disappoin
while i have fun memories of every car ive owned and miss each of them from time to time, there are only a couple i regret losing.
80 pinto, trunk car. if i knew then the things i know now....
89 turboranger. i tried to turn a fun truck into a long term project and lost interest in it/grew out of it. i shoulda left well enough alone.
1. 1967 Shelby GT 500 Sold for ($6,000 because of my crack addiction.)
2. 1912 Stanley Steam Car (Traded it for a Game Boy Color with Pokeyman Game. Sold the gameboy after I beat Pokeyman for previously mentioned crack addiction.)
3. 1992 Greyhound Bus (Ran into a McDonalds Drive through, and sold it in totaled condition to a junkyard. )
4. Saturn V Rocket (Gave to NASA in the 60's. They put it to good use.)
:[
I wish I still had the Pokeyman and Saturn V.
'68 Cougar GTE with the "W" code 427 engine... Sold in 1978 cause I didn't have a place to keep it... Unless something has happened to it in the last few years(doubtful), it survives...
Wouldn't mind having the '69 Fairlane Cobra HT with the Drag Pack... Unfortunately I sped it as well as a 428CJ Torino GT fastback... I do still have the engine from that one...
Don't much miss my early cars, but I'd like to have #4, a '64 Galaxie Fastback..
I still own #5...
(http://members.pen 15s.net/mr428/cobra1.jpg)
it was s!!!!! just like my '85 is now:toilet: ...
I regret selling the '88 bird in the banner and the '88 XR-7 on the same banner....
and my 85, because the idiot I sold it to wrecked it within a month...
That's what happened to my '66 Galaxie - I sold it to a middle eastern pizza store owner. He painted it black (it was originally burgandy with a white roof) and then wrapped it around a lamp post. I nearly cried when I saw its wrecked carcass in his yard...

hit by a drunk driver who left the sence but caught buy a trooper as it was smoken so bad ,busted his raditor. hit fairlane in left rear shoved it across the other lane down into some woods. no lincense no insurance. beat up but not hurt. the car as seen was at a friends house
my 71 GP model J......ended parting it out after not being able to find parts for it. After selling all the parts, about 90%, I was able to build my first 88 sports coupe....miss that car.
Wow, I could list a few , having owned over 40 cars.
But My regrets are :
1967 Chevelle
1974 Cutlass Supreme S
1976 Mustang Cobra II (I really Did Like this car) Had 3 other Mustang II 's
1968 California Special Mustang
1968 Mustang Coupe 289
1967 Cougar XR7
1966 Mustang Coupe
1978 Z-28 Camaro ( I built the out of that 350, it was nicknamed "The Red Rail")
1991 Thunderbird SC
1993 Taurus SHO
These were my favorites.
I've totalled/rolled/wrecked all the cars I've gotten rid of. One car I didn't wreck was a '76 Gran Torino, but I bought it in unrunnable condition. One that someone else wrecked was my uncut '66 Bronco. (I'm still miffed about that) I have saved all the useable parts, and they fill my backyard up pretty good. I still have my first vehicle....a 1978 f150 4x4. My dad bought it new after selling his 1971 Barracuda Gran Coupe (383 4bbl). If there's any regrets, you'll have to ask him. :shakehead
my first car- 1977 cougar i miss it. 351, 10 mpg, but still my fave....
Ok, the list:
'73 Charger SE Brougham, 340 4bbl, Pistol grip 4 spd, Red with Black Landau roof.
'73 Javlin AMX 401 dual Quadra-jets, 4 spd, black on black
'59 MGA 1.9L 4, 4 spd, wht ragtop.
'76 Elite, 460 tow pkg (but I can't afford 11 mpg) Silver w/ red landau top.
'63 Mercedes 190D. 190 CID Diesel. Great on gas low on power but the best ride I have hever had. Gunmetal grey.
'84 BMW 633i Black on Black.
The rest I could live without but most I remeber fondly. :)
I dont regret you selling it.... not at all.
Glad to see that you got that other 88 now :)
I wish i never sold this car......just joking i still got it nice to still have your 1st car.
ok im only 19 and despite having a huge number of cars for my age the one i miss the most i had nothin to do with. My dad had bought a 1985 Ford f150 ext cab longbed truck when I was 8. At first it was his baby but when i turned 10 he decided he was going to build it into a street strip truck and be my first vehicle. It had a 514 stroker and built c6 trans mission that could shear axles if u "goosed" it. once we had the rearend built strong enough to hold the power we started doing the body work. About halfway through my parents got divorced and dad let mom have the truck hoping she would keep it around for me which she did until her new husband moved in. The guy is not a car guy and had no respect for this gas guzzling tourque monster. About a year after they got married i got to see the truck be traded in for $1525 which was about what was in the transmission alone. Whats worse is the truck this thing was traded in for was a 98 dodge ram POS. Lets just say me and my stepdad never got along after that. Thats not even gettin into how pissed my dad was. Hes got over it but im afraid i never have that truck was amazing we changed the pinion angle so the truck never would spin the tires but just launch like a bat out of hell and it was wicked fast for being a behemouth.
Thats a sad story man i wish you still had it to after reading that should traded it for at least a Ford.
Great stories and great cars! If we only knew then what we know now....Man do I wish I never would have sold this!
1970 torino .. nuff said
No kidding? My 1st car was a 73 Javelin SST, 360/727, Blue on blue. A-pillars and floor were rusted through, so I never "regretted" it.
except for my 64 ,that is my favoite fairlane, your was awesome.i even bougth 67 cyclone body but hated the dash and grille ,ended up trading for a washing machine
I've owned only 4 cars (but have borrowed other relatives at times) since I've been driving. They are:
1987 Plymouth Voyager SE
1988 Ford Thunderbird LX
1993 Buick Century Custom
1995 Ford Thunderbird LX
I still have both the T-birds. The 88 is NEVER going anywhere. None of you here are going to ever get a chance to get it:D . I don't miss the Buick as it was a POS car. Never had a problem with the engine or trans but the body rusted all to hell and used to just randomly fall off the interior. I actually miss the 87 Voyager. Sure it was a van and slow as hell but I had a lot of memmories in that car.
This stupid thread made me miss my RX-7 again. So I looked some up on CL. And now I'm driving down to Portland to look at buying one. I hate you guys. :hick:
I had a red 5-spd 2-door Volkswagen Fox (coupe, not wagon), with a sunroof, that was my best friend back in '99. My first coupe, first manual, and first car to do extensive work on. Actually, it was the first car I ever worked on. I got it for $250 from a customer who had brought it in to the shop I worked at as a scrub dog. It needed a passenger side axle (which is when I first found out these things had equal length axles. In fact, they are the same part #'s) a rad and a few other regular maintenance items.
I drove it through the mountains and across the country. I met my wife when I had this car, and we did a lot of driving together. It had a bizarre longitudinal transaxle setup (engine was perpendicular to the axles/tranny) and never had torque steer. It would light the 'tire' in first from a roll, which I thought was impressive at the time. My only car prior to that was a 3-cyl Subaru. I had installed an Alpine tape deck (hey, I was next to dirt poor) two amps in the trunk which I screwed to the rear seat back (there was a steel piece dividing the trunk from the passenger section, so it wasn't actually mounted to the seats) some boxed 6x9's in the rear window, and two 15" subs in the rear 'door panels' (I call them door panels, but it was a two door). If you sat in the back, forget about being part of the conversation.
I ended up selling it because Ange couldn't drive a stick and needed the car as she had to drive to work and I could walk. (This is a metaphor for married life, to all you single guys) I couldn't even talk when I drove it to the dealership to trade it in on a navy '91 3.8L Thunderbird. Didn't talk the whole way home either. When I bought the '87, I swore never to let my wife get rid of one of my toys again. I did get $1200 for it, though, so that's not bad.
This is the closest I can find online, but it was red and had a black 'skirt stripe' with a cheezy 'Club Fox' decal.

I can't say I really regret selling any of my cars, but I'm 24 and only on my 4th car. I would regret selling the Mark :hick:.
Now my parents on the other hand...
Most of these pics are from the late 80s when the first muscle car boom happened.

edit: had to fix a link
Matt,
Regarding the '70 Challenger, do you know if the paint on the car was original or if had been repainted by the time those pictures were taken?
EDIT: After looking at it more closely I see too many things that aren't correct, so it appears it was repainted by the time these pictures were taken.
Do you know if your parents bought the Challenger new?
Love the S4 !

:cougarsmily:
as stupid as it is i regret selling the 93 escort i got for free. I could be driving right now if i hadnt sold the thing. Was a good little car too, needed some small work but it was nice for free. Only got 300 for it and it was worth more then that having all brand new tires and all the other repairs i did to it after i was giving it, my mom forced me to sell it to get my lincoln.
VW Foxes are cool*. They're nice and simple to work on, get good gas mileage, and go forever, kinda a spiritual successor to the Beetle.
*Especially the wagons
my freinds dad has a 82? fox. its only got a four speed and you have to push the shifter down to put it into reverse. Fun though. You can chirp 3rd.
My regrets:
67 Chevelle SS 396 (lost in divorce)
67 Mustange coupe (6 cyl. 3-spd)
65 Impala (original 283 w/powerglide)
But, still have some toys in need of some TLC. All is not lost!
i pretty much regret every car ive had to let go or sold as i get attached to everything i own.
never owned anything "special" but ive had plenty of cars and trucks since i started driving(almost 30 and just turned 26 a week ago) but the one that i miss the most is my green 91 mustang 2.3l 5 speed lx.
my brother bought it from a used car lot back in 99 with 60 something k on it, he had it till 02 untill he got into an accident and by then the clutch was nothing and he didnt feel like fixing it so he sold it to my father for 400 bucks. my dad never drove it or did nothing to it for 2 years so i picked it up off of him for a favor. i learned how to "work" on a car from that car and i drove it all the time, honestly me and my brother beat the hell out of that car the whole time each of us had it had it but whenever something broke on it it was easy to fix, you didnt need to know anything to know how to fix that car. no rust and reliable enough to drive anywhere without issue(which i wasnt used to from my days of $300 auction beaters).
last year it got totalled by the insurance company from some freshly licensed forgien idiot making a u-turn from a parking spot on a busy road right into it. still ran and drove fine, actually just replaced the clutch in it a few weeks before it happend but they said it would cost more that it was worth to fix so they totalled it. i wanted to keep it but couldnt keep a salvaged car on my street or it will get towed in a heartbeat so had to let it go. , i miss that car.
the only car ive sold that i most regret was my 87 chevy sprint turbo.
never shouldve sold that car:mad:
Gotta agree with Ductape... You want simple, find a '87-'93 4cyl 5 speed Stang... You can beat them unmercifully an they jus keep on goin...
I bought a '87 with 106K back in '93 for $1000 that had the syncros screwed in the tranny(some dufus put gear lube in it)... With $80 worth of parts from Ford, I beat it apart with blocks of wood, repl the cones and blocking rings and beat it back together again... Good as new... Probably the easiest car to work on in almost 42 years of owning vehicles(probably 350+ I used to buy and sell, even had a used car salesman's license for a few years)...
Youngest Daughter and myself ran it up to 192K mi before she sold it and bought a new '01 Saturn... AFAIK the valve cover was never off the engine... When I bought it the engine was dirty and the VC gasket was seeping... I gently snugged it up and the leak stopped, so I cleaned the engine compartment and never pulled the VC...
The successor to the Pinto. My '79 Pinto got the piss ran out of it every day for 189k worth. I never even adjusted the clutch. Gave it to my brother and he ran the piss out of it for another 6 mo before he totaled it.
EDIT: You know, that car would be a great DD now. ;)
Yeah the Pinto's were about as simple as it got.. I owned a DD '74 Wagon(actually hated that car, hurt my back)plus 3-4 others I bought to resell... I was thinking of cars you can still locate fairly easily and cheaply... The Stang never hurt my back...
I've tried to keep the best ones, but I've had to let some go. Here are a few I wouldn't mind having back some day:
SHHITTT that's MY '64 Galaxie 500!!! Actually had two, both burgundy... First was 289 three on the tree(converted to 390 4speed), and black interior... Second was a 390 Cruse-O-Matic(Which i despised the auto and sold it to my dad)... That one had a gold interior... Also had a Black/Red int parts '64, I used for the front sheet metal(after a little altercation where I removed the front suspension from a moving van)...
(http://members.pen 15s.net/turbocoupe50/4.jpg)
No regrets here. My dad on the other hand...
I get on his case every time about trading his '71 Comet GT.
He bought it new, installed headers, nice chrome air cleaner over goofy stock unit, '69 Mustang dual exhaust, cut the hood scoop to make it functional, aftermarket wheels and tires and put on hood pins for good measure. I think he swapped out the carb too but don't quote me on that.
He traded the Comet in 1973 for his second regret, a triple black '73 Dodge Charger with a 400. Since he married my mom in '73, he wanted a bigger car. If he could have either back, he'd take his Charger for sure.
So where did they end up? My dad saw the Comet a few years after he traded it. The guy had beaten up the body pretty badly and painted the interior panels all white. He found out after he sold the Charger, it was rear-ended by a VW Bug and burned.
Pics of the Comet the morning he traded it.
I regret getting rid of my 85 Stang. Granted it had a dead V6, and I had no money to do a V8 swap (or 2.3T swap) at the time, but the body was perfect. Couldn't even sell it for $300 so I pretty much gave it to my ex's dad. Last I saw it had a 460 in it... he sold it to someone else shortly after that and the last I heard it got hacked up. Fantastic!
And most VW elite act like it's the Brazilian stepchild, because they never sold it in Germany. It was the perfect car to learn on. As you said, they're super easy to work on. I was so used to that car that I once blew a rear sidewall out, and was back on the road driving with the full size spare in under five minutes.
The paint was not original. :D My dad had it painted in red lacquer since he didn't like pink. We were never sure if the 71 spoiler came on it since it was a 70 1/2 Panther Pink car. The car was not completely done in those pictures. Later on he located the correct center caps. The trunk badges were put on later. He also put on the front chin spoilers.
Here's a couple pics right after he bought it
(http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a38/cb400f75/Misc/70challengerright.jpg)
He bought it in 1986 from a junk yard (Bob's auto salvage) in Cookeville TN for 3500.00. It had been drag raced and had a full race cam in it. The options on it were:
E87 440-6
N96 Shaker (silver)
Torqueflite automatic
AM radio
heater
3.55 sure grip rear axle
panther pink paint
black vinyl/cloth interior
manual drum brakes
manual steering
white side stripes
go-wing
sport slats
15" rallye wheels
dual sport mirrors
After he bought it he started restoring it and got it nice. Then he sold it in 1989 at a Kruse auction in Branson for a lot of money at the time. After that we don't really know what happened to it, but in 2001 the current owner contacted us and sent some pictures. It belongs to a Daniel Banker in Cocoa Florida, and has been repainted the stock color. And still has the incorrect color hood scoop, black stripes, front chin spoilers (that my dad put on), and 71 rear spoiler on it.

Holy cow, I recognize that car! My hometown is Cocoa, FL! Small world I tell you...
Oh, and BTW, this thread officially bites now. I bought a freaking RX-7 because of it! Look in the Member's Rides for pics...
:hick:
My friend picked up an 88, i think. 4 speed. It was a decent basic car. But he was the kind that wont put any money into a car, no matter how little money it needs. The hood ended up blowing up and busting the windshield out and he let it go for $100.
And yeah, It was so easy to bark 1-2 shift. The radio that wasnt bolted in would fly to the back seat every time.
I totally would have driven that car too nowadays. I bet it would get 40+ mpg highway and 30+ in town.
I once got 717km out of one tank with 'Mulder' (it's a Fox, it was the late 90's, and I was a teenager........ it made sense at the time), and that was back when $40 would be a lot of fuel. :(
Thanks for the clarification Matt,
That is a very interesting car especially with that combination of options.
I can't really blame your Dad for making the color change. Panther Pink was probably way out of vogue by that time. ;)
Thanks for sharing.
