Title: The new FPV GT shows up in an Alice Cooper costume (dial-up warning)
Post by: oldraven on February 18, 2008, 08:11:05 AM
http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/17/the-new-fpv-gt-shows-up-in-an-alice-cooper-costume/

FPV will tease everyone with its new lineup of FG Falcon-based sedans and Utes at the Melbourne show, but the tech specs will remain under wraps until sometime closer to June, when the tire-shredders are scheduled to launch. We do know some things, though. As before, power will come from turbo inline-sixes or brawny V8s stuffed under the decaled, domed hood (at least in the case of the wicked FPV GT, above, which has a Boss V8 lurking under there).

Gone are all the Ford badges, too. In their place are oval FPV insignias, which make it crystal clear that these are not mere Falcons. The front fascia on the GT is menacing, with "eye black" under the G-Series-style headlamps (hence the Alice Cooper reference), and a pr0nounced honeycomb lower bumper insert. The offset GT grille badge carries over from past models. Additional matte black decals can be found on the sides of the car, and beefy (probably 19") 5-spoke wheels hide Brembo stopping power. The new FPV roster lets buyers choose manual or automatic transmissions at no additional cost. Hey Alan Mulally, CAFE-schmafe -- move the steering wheel over and send this to America so we can have the big, bad V8 Interceptor we all want. As for Australia, those GM guys at HSV better prepare for some stiff, new competition.

Hot! I love the Falcons! If they ever did bring them over (just dreaming here, obviously never going to happen) I'd have a hard time choosing between the I-6 and the V8. Very sharp cars on all lines.

if ford spent a little to get those over here, they would profit soooo much, ever person ive showed vids of those cars running are 100% blown away at how sharp the look, and how quick they go.

There aren't a lot of new cars that interest me enough to open the wallet.  Those Aussie Fords are one I'd buy.  Hellooooo Ford, are you listening?

That's the problem. Profit. To make any money on them, you'd be paying about $80G. There's nothing stopping Ford from building them here, though. This FG chassis could be the new Panther, and trickle down to lots of other smaller cars.

Well at least AMC is coming back and we get something new to drive which i really want to get some kind of new AMC because in hot rod magazine they all looked much better than the older ones.

I would also take a Focus ST.

What the hell? A retro company? I don't see AMC lasting very long, if it ever even makes it to the producing stage. With CAFE weighing on every domestic automaker like a mountain, there just doesn't seem to be much hope for this kind of company to pull a phoenix.

*edit*
One engineer did let slip a comment about a prototype nine-speed, constantly variable automatic trans (CVT) to go behind the V-12 in the Ambassador and AMX/4.

Well, so much for that. I call bullshiznit all around. Audi has been working with CVT's for decades, as have a few other foreign builders, and they haven't been able to build a CVT that can handle the power of a V6 yet. And which is it, CVT or Nine-speed? Someone at HR called up a guy with little to no answers and just started making shiznit up there.

I wish Ford would build and sell the Falcon over here. It looks like it would compete in the same market segment as the Acura TL or Lexus IS... So it had better be  good!

If they could come up with a more "pedestrian" version at a price the average person (making 40K-50K/year) could afford I think that car could save the company.

you'd be paying about $80G.

What's in there to make the price so high?  I can see Ford selling them for $40K-$60K, and successfully competing against BMW, MB, Lexus, Infinity etc.

Must be the boat trip...
For a while the AUD was stronger than the USD, but now it's back to similar to the CAD at about $0.95-0.98USD.

A month ahead, sure, but an April issue in mid February doesn't seem right. Hold on............ yep, both of my MT and Automobile mags that just showed up are March issues.

1 Australian Dollar = 0.91173 US Dollar

Factor in shipping costs and conversion to LHD and the price gets pretty north.

Okay, maybe if they built them down under and shipped them here.  Why couldn't they just build them here?

who knows the factory's would have to be re tooled to build the new cars, our engines are built by different factory's, plus a new interior would have to be made because it would have to be LHD, Now if the auzzie cars were LHD i have a feeling we would see some of them in the US but with much less exciting motors i think.

I'm with you there, man. I think all North American cars should be built in North America though. But what the hell do I know? :hick:

DaBoss, they use V8's built in North America and shipped that-a-way. The straight six is the Aussie built motor, and that's going to be replaced with a turbo V6 soon enough, that we're supposed to be building here as well.
