I don't mind a little fun on the street, but a crowd of people standing in the middle of the road in the dark? Take it to the track.
Tragic to say the least.
There's a reason why there are race tracks. This is that reason.
ok, at what fault was it of the two cars in the race? why did the idiots walk out onto a public street? I agree that street racing can be dangerous but this is stupid... they weren't even involved in it... from the sounds of the article the idiot in the crown vic never even had his lights on.... the spectaors got killed by being stupid and walking out into the middle of a public road, not by the speeding racers.... guess what? that same thing will kill you if you walk out into the middle of the road WITHOUT RACING!!!!
I agree, it's tragic but it's not jsut the speeders at fault. Today I saw somebody walking down the 406 highway.. who the hell walks on a high-speed high-traffic highway?
The attention-grabbing headline to the story is more than a little misleading.
The spectators were hit by a car that was not racing. It's unclear that there was any actual racing. The "street racers" may have just been doing burn-outs.
Details aren't quite clear yet about the lights (I've checked in on the articles several times and details keep changing), but yes, it was ultimately the idiots that ran out in the road that are at fault...but the were in the road to watch the street racers. It's one thing to race another car on a deserted road at night...quite another to invite a ton of friends and family who apparently thought the best view was the middle of the road. Ultimately I will reserve judgement on the Vic' driver until the details are fully known. Probably a good thing to reserve judgement on everyone until it is all known.
I've been hearing about this all day, considering that it took place about 20 minutes from my house.
I don't feel much sympathy when people stand out in the middle of the road and get hit.
I read that earlier today. A better, and more accurate (but less attention getting) headline would have been "8 killed in mass jaywalking incident"...
Yep. Sometimes when people get hit it's really not the driver's fault. People walk into traffic all the time and: 1. always assume that drivers can see them and 2. that they can stop in time.
I call darwin award x 8 on that.
I only wonder how old the Crown Vic driver was. Could be a South Park prophecy come true :hick:
God what kind of people would stand in the middle of a road to watch a race.
it looks like the white crownvic has spotlights, could be a reason why there are no pending charges. the cops in my area like to drive around with there headlights off to sneak up on activity like this
Not a cop. Says he had his lights on.
3:40am, and a crowd of 50 people. I'm usually in bed at that hour, not in a street watching cars.
You're right. Would they have been in the street though if there was no race?
Also, there are street racing areas in NYC that are weekly if not daily occurences in the same spot. It's not right to do, but at least those guys close the road. I can think of one in particular that there are TONS of videos on youtube for this particular locale. They'll shut that road for a half hour or more.

These events are part of a sub-culture here in Southern Maryland.
When one driver challenges another driver it goes out on their grapevine. Hundreds of people can show up to watch and gamble on the outcome.
The accident happened near the starting point of the race. As the cars pulled away some of the crowd surged onto the highway to watch them go.
Those guys seemed to be smart about it at least. There is a group around here that does the same sort of thing. It could be much worse. Check out this supreme display of stupidity: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Buao419tPps
Where is a spike strip when you need one?
how the hell did they get away with that!
What a bunch of freaking morons.
What you guys don't catch 'em ;)
That video has some of the ugliest Camaros I've ever seen in my life.
Also, fire the freakin' cameraman. Is it that hard to hold the thing still?
The Crown Vic board is going NUTS with this one. Apparently the CV driver was a member there...
If I ever sort out some actual facts from the 20+ pages I'll sum them up here.
