As you all know I just converted my car to 5speed. Well, theres an issue thats been in the car since I got it. its a little more prevalent now.
It used to be it'd go through 1 and drive fine. then it hit OD and started chugging and losing power.
well, it does it now... but through 1-2-3-4-5 and it does it the worst in 5th.
Im using all SD stuff i havent played with the timing yet or anything
The EGR is unplugged and the hose is plugged.
Its bogging almost as if it has no ass to it. I dont dare put it in 5th unless i wanna rattle parts off the car. I just put new universals in it today. and i believe the shake is excessive due to a bad motor mount. but it still did this even before the 5speed swap just chuggin like none other.
HELP!
Clayton
You're still running the SO right? Perhaps the SO computer doesn't like the 5 speed. Have you checked your TPS, IAC, ect? Set the proper base timing (10*)? Have you scanned for codes?
it did it with the aod. iac is functioning afaik im runnin about 12* in the timing. its actin like its dropped a cylender. im gonna do a compression test tomorow.
a bad or burned up clutch does the same thing...
brand new clutch. its jarring the shiznit out of me. it did it with the automatic at about 45+mph cruising speed.
Mine did that and I had to shim the roller rockers. All fixed. Now I have the new cam and heads,no worries.Timing also could be the culprit.I also had a vibration around 65 to 70 mph,and while I was swapping cam and heads,I looked at my harmonic balancer, bad news.I swapped it out,no more troubles.I wish you luck my friend.
i just hope its somthing stupid. Or else im gonna force myself to save up gobs and gobs of cashola. (gonna do that anyway but... not as fast)
im gonna hopefully be buildin a 400hp NA motor.
Dumb question but are you sure you don't have a messed up plug wire? How close are the wires routed? Perhaps it's cross firing?
Maybe the car is just mad that you're driving it in the snow ;)
This would have been far easier to diagnose without swapping in a 5 speed manual transmission.....There could be transmission issues in addition to your pre-existing ones.
There's a lesson in this.
Check your plugs, wires, timimg, fuel pressure, IAC, TPS and anything else that is suspect to include the mounts. Run codes.
If you had this issue when you got the car all of the above mentioned items should have been checked over....Were they?
If not, get to it then.
Yeah, just be careful. It'd suck to do the "quick save" for a new motor to still have a problem that now you REALLY can't afford to fix! :punchballs:
A manual transmission will transmit engine roughness through the drive train more noticeably than a automatic(a O/D auto can come close in lockup though) You should have trouble shot the engine problem prior to the swap, but in reality probably won't chance the outcome... Just thinking it would suck to have a burned valve or other serious engine problem, after going through all the work to swap trannys...
Just feel like mentioning when I once did a compression test I think, on the front most cylinder drivers side, I didn't put the wire back on. :toilet: At idle I noticed virtually no difference. Once in 3rd gear it was a little shaky at the lower rpms but ~2000 or higher it was fine. Into OD, try and move anywhere at that thing bucked so bad I thought the car was gonna shake itself the hell apart.
That was awful, I had no idea what it was. I dealt with that for two weeks, driving everywhere sans OD. Then I saw the wire. What a humbling feeling....
Hoep ya find whatever it is!
thats almost what its like zonda.
im gonna do a comp. test tonight and clean the plugs and check the resistance in the wires.
the egr was stuck open. bam with the block off plate.
i nudged the timing, adjusted the clutch AGAIN.
still shakes a little in 4th and 5th but i blame the motor mount.
well im sorry that the code reader at school wouldnt work. and the egr was disconnected.
Not likely your problem...
it does need an O2 sensor... you think that could be a possible culprit Tom?
Doubt it's a O2 prob... I've run them disconnected without a prob(You may try that just for troubleshooting)...
IF the ignition is good, it may just need the injectors cleaned... Seemed to be a common problem with the SO in the '86 Grand Marquis...
could also be a blocked or clogged vacuum line...
Excuses, excuses. If you don't have a paper clip and a $10 multimeter, you probably shouldn't own one of these cars. [/dogpile]
ill try that then... the screens are prolly clogged or somthing.
will check that too.
See one of the very few actual problematic tech threads i need some help on and i get flack because i didnt do somthing up to par or am still learning how to do some things. I dont know everything. And I dont claim to. i get some shiznit.
well i havent had a chance to look at it... but i drove it today because the cat decided it needed a rest. i noticed it only does its little bucking thing when it gets up to operating temp.
It's all good br0......fordfuelinjection.com find the codes section. NOT hard at all, I've done it...you almost feel kinda silly sittin there but make sure it's quiet wherever you are, you basically ground out a pin on this big grey plug near your windsheild wiper motor. And then turn the key to accessory mode and ur check engine light starts blinkin.....and ya count em :D. Not as quick as a reader but I got a good bit of mileage out of it when I was troubleshooting getting the H.O. running.
Ignition stuff? Maybe the TFI module? I don't know a HELL of a lot about em but aren't they supposed to go bad a lot on these cars?
And yeah x2 on the vac lines...esp whats going to the MAP sensor and all that. Make sure theyre getting a good "signal" I guess lol and that nothin leaks.
well... that'd be easier if i had a check engine light too lol.
Yeah i cant go through it quite yet because... i you know... have to drive it because the cougar is having those "I dont wanna" fits.
TFI new. Coil New. Cap Rotor plugs and wires New. I dont know alot about troubleshooting but im gonna try my est to get it to stop what its doing.
Hell, lastnight after work it went through all 5 gears nicely, No probs at all till I stopped at the gas station and put some money in its tank. started it back up and blah there it goes being a pain in 4th and 5th.
When was the last time you replaced the fuel filter?
How is the fuel pressure?
I changed the fuel filter the summer of 06 I believe, right before I rebuilt my motor.
I put a new fuel pump in last winter around the beginning of January.
I get about 40-41PSI but im gonna check that again today... Whatchoo got a lean on Chuck? Im gonna look into everything I possibly can.. If you have some ideas, lemme know.
sounds like a slight misfire to me. whered you buy yout tune up parts from? are they cheepo's or good ones? try taking the cap off, see if anything is odd with the rotor or if theres carbon built up inside the cap. if not, take every wire off, one by one, and look down it looking for really slight tears in insulation or darker spots where the spark is jumping through. it doesnt take much it may just be a little dot you'll find where its jumping. lastly if that doesnt work, check all the plugs for carbon or signs of carbon tracking.
if it was there before, and its there not, it doesnt sound like its a trans problem. and i know checking all that can be tedious, but your running out of stuff to test for.
Just curious on the fuel situation that's all.
Have you checked the fp while driving to see if the chugging jives with a fuel delivery issue?
no, i have to get a hose for the FP tester.
chuck, you think its leaning out? Thats what it seems like to me. My EGR is disconnected and blocked off, im going to, when i have a spare moment... tear the intake off clean the injectors and blow the vaccum lines out.
It seems to do it when its under load. and it doesnt do it very much when its cold.
I'm not "thinking" anything. Just something to test.
Did you ever run codes?
gonna try at school.but i dont know exactly what im looking for.
the snap on machine wont work.... and i dont have a check engine light. and i dont understand the readings on the volt meter.
It isn't hard to understand the pulses of the needle or the flashing of a testlight. 6 flashes or sweeps equals 6, 4 flashes equals 4 ;)
Go to the NATO site, read the Tech Articles on running codes. There is an explanation on how to get codes and how to interpret the flashing of the lights.
cool thanks man.
See the below pic of how to connect your paper clip and a test light. I would suggest you use a 12v buzzer instead of a test light because its easier to hear and write,, vs look and write. All the below information is in my DIY link in my sig plus a whole lot more just incase you get froggy and wanna take some notes.

Diagnostic testing with codes 3 step method
**For more detailed info and other options to pulling codes, visit the Tech library at therangerstation.com. Scroll down on the left and click on EEC-IV Diagnostics under the "computer" section.
To pull codes, locate your diagnostic connectors usually on the driver side engine bay.
There are two connectors, one large female one has 6 pins sort of triangle shaped. 4 pins along the bottom row and 2 on the top row. Count these pins by looking into the connector and counting each row left to right.
The second connector will be a single wire female plug as well located near the 6 pin female plug.
Below will be instructions on how to use a jumper wire to connect the "sig rtn" lead to the "sti". Here is where you would use a paper clip to make this jumper. The SIG RTN connetion is on the large connector , top row , right hand pin. (top row has two pins). The "STI" conneciton is the single wire lead near the diagnostic large connector. Read below and install the jumper when told to.
MEMORY CODES
Memory codes are problems that the computer has noticed in the past. If for example there was a loose wire to a solenoid that only lost contact while driving but was making contact while testing the system there would be NO HARD FAULT CODE. The code would show up IN MEMORY. The same would happen for a sensor that only went out of range occasionally. Memory codes come out AFTER the separator pulse.
NOTE: The computer will erase the memory after a certain number of engine re-starts if the problem does not repeat itself. The number of re-starts varies from 20 to 80 depending on the year of the vehicle. The later models keep memory longer.
Clearing Codes
These codes are kept in memory for 40 warm up cycles. To clear the codes for purposes of testing or confirming repair, perform the code reading procedure. When the fault codes begin to be displayed, de-activate the test by either disconnecting the jumper wire or releasing the test button on the hand scanner. Stopping the test during code transmission will erase the continuous memory. Do not disconnect the negative battery cable to clear the codes; the keep alive memory will be cleared and a new code (19) will be stored for loss of PCM power.
Below will mention using a test light instead of the check engine light during the instructions you will read. If you would like to be up near the engine and pull the codes then hook up the jumper wire when instructed and as described above. NOW, hook up a professional or riged up test light from the positive batter terminal to the large test connector , bottom row 2nd pin (STO pin) counting left to right looking into the plug. When you follow the steps below, the test light will strobe codes and how to decode them will follow below. I have used a 12dc buzzer i got out of an old microwave that gives me an audible tone. This makes it easier to focus on the paperwork end of the task so im not looking back and forth at a light and paper second guessing myself.

STEP 1
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) Method OR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT METHOD
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) on the dash (Engine Light) can be used to retrieve the stored codes. This method does not allow for any system investigation. This should only be used in the field where quick checks are needed. Follow the directions previously given for the scan tool procedure. To activate the tests, use a jumper wire to connect the signal return (SIG RTN) pin on the diagnostic connector to the Self-Test Input (STI) connector. The self test input (STI) line is the separate wire and connector with or near the diagnostic connector. Codes are transmitted with a pause between flashes. Code 32 would be sent as 3-flashes, a pause and then 2-flashes. A slightly longer pause separates the codes. The only way to repeat the code is to recycle the system. The Continuous Memory Codes are separated from the other codes by 6-seconds, a flash and then another 6-second delay. Compare the 2-digit and 3-digit Diagnostic Codes with the appropriate chart.
STEP 2
KEY ON ENGINE OFF (KOEO) TEST ************KOEO
NOTE: On 4.9L trucks with a manual transmission hold the clutch pedal in during this test.
On Diesel engine trucks hold the throttle to the floor during this test.
1. Make sure engine is fully warmed. If in doubt, run engine at 2000 rpm for 2 minutes.
2. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds for system to shut off. Make sure A/C is off and transmission is in Park (automatic) or Neutral (manual).
3. Hook up light and jumper (or a tester if you have one). Turn key to ON (do not start engine).
4. Fast Codes are output (ignore fast light flashes).
NOTE: Unhook self test input jumper (or tester if used) at any time during code output to erase memory.
5. Read hard faults.
6. Separator Pulse.
7. Read memory codes.
8. See code explanations and check components as necessary.
Use FIRST CODE OUTPUT and retest after any repairs are made.
STEP 3
KEY ON ENGINE RUNNING (KOER) TEST ***************KOER
1. Make sure engine is fully warmed. If in doubt, run engine at 2000 rpm for 2 minutes.
2. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds for system to shut off. Make sure A/C is off and transmission is in Park (automatic) or Neutral (manual).
3. Hook up light and jumper (or tester if you have one).
4. Make sure vehicle is safe to run and start engine.
5. Engine I.D. should be output.
6. Step on brake and turn steering wheel 1/4 turn. If the vehicle has an overdrive cancel switch, push it.
7. If a "Goose" pulse is received, move throttle quickly 1/2 way down and release.
8. Fast Codes are output (ignore).
9. Read codes.
10. See code explanations and check components as necessary. Use FIRST CODE OUTPUT and retest after any repairs are made.
