Got myself a Flat screen dell monitor VGA/DVI (only using the VGA since i have no DVI port)
model SE198WPF 19'' wide screen monitor.
from walmart
purchased the produce care plan (kicks in after manufacturer warranty expires)
Problem
every stinking icon, picture ect is stretched wide. (monitor is not set in "stretch" mode, already checked that).
Computer: HP Pavallion bout 4 yrs old , has video card on mother board.
CD came with the monitor but when i stick it in, all that comes up in auto run is a freaking JPG animated piture of someone showing me how to snap the screen to the stand.
There is no book for the monitor.
Call dell, they say said monitor is good.
I ask whats going on and they cant figure it out.
They tell me to call Hewlitt Packard,,lol. ALl i wanted to know is if this monitor is compatable with the video card but they wont answer until i give them 130 dollars tech support.
Ill save the long and boring,,,, anyone had an issue like this?
I never once saw the driver load on the computer for this monitor. I went to the dell site and for the life of me, when i select my monitor type for available drivers, there isnt anything to download!
Ive called dell 8 times, hp twice and ofcourse walmart tech support which refuses to help until 2009.
My assembly paper thing is all the documentation i have other than a generic "PRODUCT INFORMATION GUIDE" which really has nothing to do with the monitor. I do have a nice neat color illustration of how to hook it up but the fine print says "FINDING INFORMATION> Refer to the USER GUIDE on your CD.
SO,,,,, i troll through the cd and there is no such folder called "USER GUIDE" anywhere. If it has another name, then thier quality sux cause even the random PDF's on the cd are just generic information in several languages.
All i need to do is figure out a way to fix this or it goes back to wally world and back to the CRT i go.
Is this just the nature of the beast with wide screen monitors? its annoying to say the least and just looking at this site here with everyones cars looking about 2 feet longer is just agitating.
Your video card resolution needs to be changed to your monitor resolution, if it supports it. I had that problem on my 26".
Should be in your video properties I think

Yes, you need to run in the monitors native resolution. Probably something like 1440x900 or 1680x1050, or 1920x1200 if its really high end.
What screen res are you running right now?

I can not manually enter any ole resolution, i can only move a slider arrow which has only 4 settings.
The dell guy said something about being able to set the resolution to like a 16:9 ratio where as now most people with crt's are 4:1

Typically WinXP doesn't have the correct driver. Those are usually supplied on the CD that comes with the monitor. However, if you can't find the driver on the CD or can't access it, you can usually download the driver from Dell's website.

It took me 2 minutes to find this on their site. Should be the correct one.
Or the video card in your machine has no widescreen resolution driver.
I know what you mean, trust me i can read between the lines. I did also find the driver section rather quickly. Upon arrival to the part where the driver should reside, the page was not showing a file.
In the lower left hand side of my computer, IE said "DONE with errors"
I can see the folder on the CD for drivers but there is no .exe file in there.

On a side note, i have figured out how to narrow my screen and that helps. The problem is that when someone else logs on to thier account, then logs off, all my screen settings are gon so its back to WWWWIIIIIIDDDDDEEEEE screen again.
no change after tinkering the download.
Are you adjusting resolution here?
The intel 810 chipset is an old one and may not have widescreen support.
shiznit I just realized I'm running an odd ball resolution.. Fixed that.
See if there's newer m-board drivers at Intel
or do a search for 3rd party drivers. there was a driver place that had everything a couple years ago, sorry I cant remember what it was, I'll look on my Tivo computer tonight
Get the latest graphics driver from intel. You shouldnt need a monitor driver.
Running the wrong resolution isnt gonna cause errors in IE, or anything for that matter.
Downloaded the video driver and now my max resolution is below. Does this sound like progress for a wide / flat screen 19'' monitor?
I still had to adjust the pixel clock so the left and the right side of my screen is pulled in towards the center. I have this 1/2'' black screen area on each side of my display now. Atleast with the driver, things look better. i can juuuuusssstt barely tell the display is a wee bit to wide.

I'm fairly certain your resolution should be 1440x900 this would be a 1.6 ratio compared to the 1.33 ratio you currently have. This should hopefully fix your width problem. Now since your graphics card doesn't support this resolution the best solution would be to upgrade. If you don't want to do that, you could try a custom resolution that has the required 1.6 ratio and is low enough that your card supports it. Something like 1152x720 (I assume the card won't go higher than 1152 width)

1152x864 isnt the correct res, that isnt even widescreen. I used to run that on my old 17" crt monitor.
How old is the computer? You should be able to run way higher than that.
You could always try buying a cheap video card (under $50).
xp has drivers set up for monitors just like 95/98 did... If you can figure out how to manually select the monitor from a list (cant figure out how on this stupid vista laptop... but under display properties there is an advanced tab with a drivers tab for the monitor...)
and change it to a really high end monitor with lots of resolutions. I used to run well over 1600/1200 back in the 95 days with my 21" or so hp mac monitor. The only way to get more resolutions didn't have anything to do with the drivers for the video card. I had a 2mb one. At the time that was high tech...
I just always used to change the monitor to the biggest hp one with the most abbreviations next to it...
I'd suggest a video card with DVI. It will solve your issue and dvi makes for a better picture. GF had issues (not same as yours) and was also using vga from built in video card. She bought the cheapest card she could with dvi it solved her issues and the dvi picture is lots better. She paid about 35 for a cheap card at newegg. Just be sure the card fits your motherboard slot
I agree with Haystack - just pick the correct monitor or install the drivers for the monitor from the CD and the correct resolutions will then be available. I got a 19" wide screen for my old HP computer and all was fine as soon I installed the drivers that came with the monitor. Drivers don't have an exe extension though - perhaps you can do the install new hardware thing and find the correct inf file on the CD.
