So, my winter beater tempo is probably done after this year. Body and chassis are getting questionable, and I want something that isn't quite such a clunker.
I've been toying with the idea of picking up V8 Bird to drive during the winter on days when the weather isn't too bad (truck would be reserved for those days), especially since I could probably get one fairly cheap and I think it'd be a nice driver that I could still play with a bit, unlike the tempo.
Just wondering what mileage you guys get...if it's manageable, I may go for it. I only drive about 10 miles to work these days.
Mine is only 17MPG, but the cam really hurts mileage.
Not sure there are too many 5.0s like yours living in Tbirds. ;)
And the KB blower helps it:hick:
Seriously though, I guess I have a decent amount of work done too and I still average about 20-21 MPG. I get better gas mileage out of the Cougar than I do out of the wife's brand new, stone stock SUV....
Figure anywhere between 12-16MPG city, up to 29-30 highway (under ideal conditions). I regularly saw 28 MPG in mine on highway trips, and on one occasion actually managed 32.4 MPG (by the tripminder) but that was when I was consciously trying to get the best mileage I could - no speeding, no A/C, no fun...
27-28 on the highway.
My 83 used to get 24-25 on the highway, but it had a pocket calculator for an EEC. (EEC III)
With 89 Ocatane and 10% Ethanol I get 26-27 mpg HWY and 18-20 mpg CITY. Without ethanol I can do slightly better HWY. Exhaust work seems to have helped alot.
I'm getting roughly 24mpg out of both with most of my driving being hwy.
I averaged 19 about. Generally driving city. Usually didn't go under 19 though.
The 5.0 can rival, even better a 2.3T at times...
COLD starts, drive 10mi ain't going to be very good with a 5.0(lot of cast iron to heat up)... Running at a steady 60mph, 30+ isn't uncommon... (That brings up a thought)
Four or five years ago I drove to Carlisle and of course parked with the real Turbo Coupes... One of your nameless buddies wandered by just as I was getting organized and said(snottily)"what kind of mileage you get with that 5.0"??? Well I'd just filled up when I made the city limits and said "dunno lets check"... So I whipped out the calculator and receipt and it figured 26.3... Turned around to see him three cars away all ass and elbows... Found out later his TC couldn't match my numbers... LOL
My tripminder actually shows numbers in the 30's with the cruise on and set @65 or so on the interstates.
I get 12 out of my 351 in the truck ;(
13-14 city, 24-25 highway. I in no way baby my 88 when driving either. I have been know to *exercise* the throttle on a few occasions.
The 3.8 in my 95 gets almost 18mpg city which I think is pretty good, except it's slow :hick:
I can beat that----8 highway in my van
my average speed is around 40mph, i drive back roads more than interstate, also i have a bit of fun every now and then. 21.x mpg.
15-17 seems to be my average. mostly city.
i get about 20 mpg. thats 99% in town w/2.73 gears
I average about 25mpg on the highway with the 5.0 HO, AOD, and 3.08 gears
ever since the new fuel pump filter and injector screen cleaning... it gets abot 27-28 hiway and about 17-18 city.
i drive that thing about 20 miles a day because of school and work.
Back with the 2.73 gears, I was getting mid 20s, sometimes as high as 28mpg with a mix of highway and side roads. In my one all highway trip, I got 33mpg.
I get around 20 in the city
As of last week before tearing a head off, like 13 traffic, 16 City, 31 highway with HO bottom/Cobra top end, aod, 2.73's. Exhaust is quite rich at 1000rpm idle (fixing this).
Last two highway trips it has taken me .2 gallons of gas just to drive 2-3 miles to get on the freeway though...running like with the warped head.
I get around 20 to 24 MPG. All depends if I keep my foot out of it.
i've been seeing how aggressive i can drive my car (to the point of holding my breath is some corners.) also gunning it whenever i feel like it (if it's in the right place at the right time, no endangering anyone.) drove traffic, city, interstate, and backroads. 65-75mph most commonly. 21.4mpg. i think my car is harder on tires than it is on the gas tank.
I get ~18 almost all city.
almost all city (35-45 all short drives) wtih my old stock 84 5.0 I averaged about 20-22 when I wasn't standing on it regularly. Got better city gas milage then my wifes (at the time) 97 v6 monte carlo.
tripminder says i average 19.6 mpg and 36.2 miles per hour (i do a mix of highway and rural/city driving)... it's pretty accurate to what i see..... that's when i run 89... i only average about 17.5 when i run 87 (i think my timing chain is stretching because i'm at base timing)
Getting 18-19 city now with the new headgasket. Haven't driven it enough to get very accurate readings though. The motor hauls ass now though.
I have only checked mine when I drive to St. Paul, MN.
During that 5 hour drive, i average 28 mpg and run around 65 the entire way. I have 3.73's, Manual tranny with .79 5th gear.
Of course it will be a seriously different number this coming year. The 351 with a Tremec behind it will not have to work very hard but it will be eating more fuel just due to the size if the camshaft.
a got a 351 in my bird and mileage (14)is better than tire ware:burnout: my dd is a mark 7 (88) and with the aod i get around 22 :birdsmily:
I get 8 regularly in the summer out of my truck, but that weighs 5200# and is your run of the mill airbagged mid 12 sec truck:shakeass:
I got 30 out of my turbocoupe with 5 deg base timing and was QUITE happy:D I dont think anybody in my family ever got anything that high, and I'm not sure my brother did either(maybe after the last time we talked to him)with his brand new, like week old prius:flame:
