Alright, if you don't feel like helping just don't read it :hick:
I've got a HO block at a buddies shop, our agreement was $200 for the complete shortblock, cam as well. He's having troubles getting the waterpump bolts out, the heads were broken off from the previous owner.
I don't know if I should give him the rest of the money, take the block as-is and swap the ho parts into my so block, which most likely needs a fresh crosshatch, and it would be an added expense to do so, because of rings and bearings and it wouldn't work out well, seeing as money is slim pickin's in my account and wallet.
Or...
Get my money back and do rings and bearings in the so block, given that the crank is ok and not damaged from the spun bearing/rod knock.
I'm leaning towards just freaking waiting until he can figure it out, I've already got the ecu and injectors and I think it would be a waste to not go aehad with the ho conversion.
Any opinions? I'm pretty stressed out.
I do have paypal guys, $5 would help:bowdown: <- failure at humor:dunno:
Busted water pump bolts are prety common.I've seen people drill them off,and other removal techniques. If the shortblock is good,I wouldn't let a couple of bolts stand in my way. Most 5.0 owners have gone through this.If you're going to upgrade your SO engine,You could buy the cam, heads, and more for $200.00.The H.O cams are cheap, and I bought a great set of E7"s for $50.00 ( I just had them ported,3 angle valve job and Comp Cam springs). My point, you have options, and the bolts CAN be removed.
I know they can, but he is having troubles, I guess, and I don't have tools to do so.(ever since the move)
I have a set of E7's with better springs. All I really need is the cam but, whats the SO compression ratio compared to an HO? I'd rather have the whole thing and whatnot. With using my SO block and upgrading it, also comes along the added expences of rebuilding it, like I said.
If your SO has a rod knock , chances are the crank will need work as well. Give the guy time and maybe some suggestions as to how and get the bolts out. I.E. drill and bolt removers or drill and tap. Keep your eye out for another if need be.
Pretty sure your crank is toast, maybe send the ho to a machine shop and have the bolts removed???
or if there is enough of the bolt left sticking out take a nut put it on there weld em in place and turn em out with a hand wrench. ive done that a few times and it works out well.
There might be enough now, but they were covered by the water pump, he said he got the water pump off so I will have to go take a look.
I don't know about the crank, but I'll be checking it, should be today or tomorrow. It was only a short period of time and I've seen motors ran longer then I ran mine and the crank was alright.
When I did the water pump on the Cougar last year (I think it was last year anyway) I sheared off a bolt as well. I ended up drilling it out and putting in a helicoil and a stud. Wasn't too bad (just a bit of a search to find a stud that would work) and I haven't had any trouble with it.
I 2nd that motion.
Fix it right. Yeah, it might cost you a few bucks to take it in and have the bolts removed, but you don't have to worry about an amateur doing it and screwing it up worse.
I agree the bolts will come out somehow with patience, if theres a will theres a way.
Well... first step to fixing broken waterpump bolts is to remove the water pump. :D
After that you'll see what needs to be done. As others have said, drill and tap, vice grips, or weld a nut on it.
Get the HO block done. It'll be worth it in the end.
Haha, its already off sparky:beatyoass:
I'm thinking about taking delivery of the block and doing it myself, I do have these...http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200263374_200263374
If you haven't tried those, get a set, they are from advanced auto parts and are worth every single penny of their cost. Even have a lifetime warranty :hick:
