its confussing the way you wrote that up but ill try to help.

There is a temp sender= has a connnector plug on top , more than one pin.
and
there is a temp sensor, it has a single threaded stud sticking out.

One runs the dash display

the other gathers temp changes and reports that information to the EEC which inturn works all the magic that you cant see.

In electrical tech, there are many wiring diagrams to be found.

In my diy link, there are short cuts to most of them that I think can be helpful.  Look for something like the EEC wiring or Dash layout and you will find the color wire that matches the problem you are having.

ok
the pic you posted is for an buttstuffog / needle guage., not digital.

question
does the sensor you talk about go on the driver side front of the intake to the right of the distributor looking at the motor?
if so....
there should be a two wire connector. One wire is black/white and the other is red/white.  These two wires should transition back to a gray flat conector near the harness that leads to the AC.
If that is the connector you have ,(two wire) then you need to tell them you have other options in your car such as climate control ect.

If not and you only have a sensor with a single slip on boot, you are fine and that appears to be the correct temp sensor.

yes ,you can get the right one.

ask for a coolant temp sending unit.  There is another one mounted on your heater core bypass plumbing along the pass side intake.

My best guess is they are the same part number.  Check and see if they both are stock parts and if so, they will be the same.

If I remember ,there isn't two wires for it.If you got 1 wire ground it the gauge should max with the key on,if two jump with a paper clip again it should max.that will tell you the wireing is right. And yes you an get the right one.

I'll be replacing my sensor soon (the one that supplies info to the EEC), too.
I find the terms used by some websites a bit confusing.

To get it right, is this the sensor I'll need?

And is this the sender that controls what's shown in the dash?

So what is this?

so we are suppose to ignore the original post to answer you?:flame:

The both,, or all three of you need to go look at your coolant temp sending unit.

It is located on the forward pass side of the intake.

now, usually the temp sensor (not sender) has one wire,, located on the forward drivers side of the intake.

with a full digital dash, this single wire sensor is not used and you will likely find the wire unhooked.

get your terminiology right with the parts store and you will get the part.

you never answered my questions earlier so help is hard to give.

Heck,, i dono, i may be bass askwards but still.  Its too easy.

ask them to pull these two parts..

engine coolant temp sensor
engine coolant temp sendor

the the right part will reaveal itself.

In yours and my case, i belive we have two engine coolant temp sendors.

One on the pass forward of the intake (o-50k ohms)
One on the driver forward of the intake (probably the same resistance)

Ill take a pic of mine tomorrow.
>>>>>>
Tomorrow came early.

Are you sure that other slip on boot isnt for your oil presure sensor?
Anyway, the sensor you have there is typically for a needle guage.  My dash is full digital and the sender is a two wire.
Here is what i have...

i have an 88 with the norm cluster and it has the same sender as my new one with the digilt cluster but i see that it has to have a kind of pluge i dont have on my car so im trying to find out where it runs so i can get it to work. but i think i know what i need to do now. just have to go get the sender and the plug and wire them up and it should work.

Alright in your picture with the two wires, the one that comes through the motor pull bracket is not  one that connects to the sender. In my 87 5.0 the shorter one that comes from under the plemun is what connects to it.
Where does the wire going through the motor pull bracket connect to on the other end?

oh okay. another thunderbird i hope. I was searching through looking to find out why my temp gauge is pegged adn the car is cold. Thought i might be able to help.

My advice is to take a lot of pictures so you have them when you reassemble in the next car and bag and tag bolts/parts. Just my advice, I was glad I did.
