I just picked up an 87 cougar xr-7 and i'm having some problems with the left blinker... it will light up but will not blink :( I checked all the grounds that i could find but i am new to this cougar, obviously, and could have missed something... I was hoping that i could get some tips on what else it could be.
Could either be a bad bulb or a bad flasher under the dash near the fuse panel. I'd try both, shouldn't cost more than 6 bucks to do so.
My Dads crown vic had the same poblem. It could just be that the stalk is worn out. I have heard that if you put the light bulbs in backwards it will do that.
Are the flashers side specific?... because the right side turn signal works... if they are then that sounds like its could be my gremlin that i am looking for. :D
if one side flashes and the other doesn't the flasher is ok.
Chances are it is a bulb problem....make sure all bulbs work and are the correct number bulb for the location. other than that maybe wiring, bad socket, or the turnsignal switch
i have to share this with you so you dont end up going crazy like i did.
my blinkers would not work on the driver side,, i swapped all bulbs from pass to driver side,, then all of a sudden nuthin freakin worked right at all. I was really agitated but............here is what i found just for your sake and i will share it .......
if for some reason you ever change out the bulbs,, these sockets are soft enough that the bulb can be installed backwards. Yes backwards meaning the nipples on the bulbs are offset for a reason so you dont do this. If you manage to install the bulb wrong in *****ANY socket along the rear,, wierd shiznit will happen.
what i did notice when i installed the bulbs incorrectly , thinking they were in right,, the incorrect bulb would appear brighter than normal.
this is just food for thought and i think you should know.
Replace the flasher, its the one with the fuses not the one on the back of the block. My cougar did that when I got it. Light cam on, all Lights good. Still no left side blink. Took apart the multifunction switch and cleaned it. Then I changed the flasher and low and behold I have a left blinker! It must run the current in both directions or something for it to work one way and not another....
Thanks for the advice... i'm going to work on it this week and i will post up when or if i fix it... or if i just bash in the headlights trying :D
