Title: power door lock ? again
Post by: irv on January 09, 2008, 03:41:36 PM
i have an 88 XR7 that the power door locks will lock but not
unlock. i was told by more than one person here and in the
shop manual that the relays are under the passenger seat.
well there is nothing under there but the lumbar harness.so
do i have the 1 in a million that put them somewhere else.
irvies[murphys] law strikes again.i have new lock and unlock
relays to try but havent found where they put them.and no
not under the drivers seat or console.this was an april 88
build. any one got a theory? it locks from either side button
but doesnt even make a noise on the unlock side. thanks for any
help!--irvin toms

If you have the keyless entry feature you will not have the relays.
The locks will be controlled by the keyless entry module.

My 88 Cougar does not have Keyless nor does it have relays under the seat.

Mine are under the dash, right up by the gas pedal. Everyone told me under the passenger seat too but they were wrong.

I believe mine are under the dash also. Didn't see anything when I pulled the seats out. All I had was this connector that went under the carpet

does anybody have a pic of the relay in question?

There are a bunch of connectors under the pass. seat that do nothing in mine. I assume one would be for the power seat which I don't have.--- the others?    Don't know.

I can get a picture of my relays under the Seat, I never knew they were for the locks LOL i always wondered what they were.  Daminc r u changing to Duel power seats?  Its not that hard to do lol, once u get the hardness it hooked right up, then when I got the Turbo seats The power lumbar connecters were already there for both sides and worked out :D

The relays under the passenger seat may be a year-specific thing.
I don't recall ever seeing any relays there in my '88 XR-7, but I have two of them there in my '86 XR-7.
My power locks have never worked, so I'm not sure if that's where the problem lies.

They were under the seat on my '87 Sport, but I believe moved to the dash for '88....

This is the best view I could get of the relays. This is looking straight up at them from the driver's side floor..almost directly inline with the gas pedal. Oh yeah...pay no mind to the hanging stuff in the background...my master cylinder and booster are out for upgrades at the moment.

found the problem. a good friend came down after i released
my frustration. his shop has mitchell on demand. to make a
long story short, if your unlock button wont work it is actually
the LOCK relay that is giving the trouble[and vice versa].
the unlock solenoid grounds through the lock relay. and yes
the relays are to the right og the steering column. it also
mentions it in the 88 evtm. thanks for all the help.
