Title: Loud lers?
Post by: thunderjet302 on January 03, 2008, 10:45:18 PM
This is how my car sounds now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkLPbIbuKE0

So I want to replace the current 2.25" tail pipes and 2.25" Flowtech Afterburner lers with 2.5" tails and lers (the car already has a 2.5" catless H pipe). So my question is what is the loudest ler I can run that doesn't sound like ass? The car isn't a daily driver so I'm not concerned about it driving me nuts. Also I'm NOT running the car with out lers ;) . Or should I just get another set of Flowtech Afterburners (2.5")? Any input would be great.

I think both those are illegal:hick: Then again dumps might not be but I still want tail pipes :hick:

As it stands right now the car is pretty loud (ie it sets off some car alarms:D ). I'm wondering if I keep the same lers (in a 2.5" size) if it'll be stupid loud. I know the Flowtech Afterburners I use are louder than regular 40 serries Flowmasters. I've been looking at the Cheryy Bomb Extream ler though. It is a little ler with one chamber and that's it. Similar to the 10 serries flowmaster race lers but it comes in a 2.5" offset in/offset out configuration;)

SLP's Loud mouth, systems are THE loudest, but I would go with 1 5/8's BBK headers, 2.5" offroad H-pipe, 2.5" Flowmaster 40 series and 2.5" tails....  that is the exhuast setup I ran on all my stangs, and It would set off car alarms just cruising past them...

I love the way the Magnaflows sound on my 87. I'd buy those again in a heartbeat.

I think your car sounds great in that vid. Hell, you've got me thinking about getting an off road H-Pipe (again).

BTW, this is off topic but what rpm does your XE266 kick in at?

HP #'s mean nothing if other things in the exhaust system are changed to accomodate certain lers.  I've never seen the article so I couln't tell if this test holds any substance.  More info is needed.  Header type and size, pipe diameter size, collector length and diameter..... I'm sure different exhaust setups will affect ler ouptput and which ones output the most as well.
If the rest of the exhaust system was left unchanged for each run on these particular tests, it would seem the exhaust system was optimized to be used with a ler and not wihout as evidenced by no ler showing the lowest HP rating.

Show me how many CFM's a ler is capable of flowing on a flow bench with no other piping involved.  It would convince me a little more than these numbers without how they came upon them.

i think they used a stock 302 mustang.  all that was changed on the car was the lers.

Actually it's a Magnum 266HR ;) The cam kicks in at about 2,000 rpm and pulls like a mofookie up to the 5,000 rpm shift point. Really it doesn't feel like power drops off untill it's in 3rd gear over 5,000 rpms with my foot to the floor;) Cam has an operating range of 1,200-5,200 rpm.

You can hear the cam in my car a bit at idle though can't you?;)

Yes, but what exhaust components besides the lers were changed from dyno run to dyno run?  Some lers are built specifically for certain h/x-pipes and cannot be used with other systems.  One would hope the lers use for this test could all bolt up to the same piping and that this was in fact done.  Until I know for sure, I'll remain skeptical.

i just say be skeptical, but it does kind of give you an idea of the performance.  an *IDEA* of how they are.

+1 for the Moroso Spiral Flows...I freakin' hate SLP, sounds like ass.  A buddy of mine replaced his flowmaster 40's on his old '72 Maverick with 2.5" spiral flows...such an amazing difference...no gay cackle or crackling sounds either....guys were asking him if he had put a big block in it....lol.  If my car looked like it should be fast, I would have spiral flows on it.
