i have an 86 XR7 that im in the process of fixing up.
the exhaust on it is toast, the ler has a whole in it, and some of the pipes are rusted, so it wont pass inspection.
my questions are ..
i am interested in buying a 3" Stinger downpipe, and exhaust. What ler should i use??
What seups did you guys use?? and what do i do about exhaust hangers??
Dynomax ultraflow, or Magnaflow. Any straight thru style ler is good. You could even use glasspacks or bullet lers, but generally the oval style lers with an offset inlet/outlet are best. Dont dare use a chambered ler like a flowmaster. Turbo lers arent good either but are better than chambered, and are okay if you need quiet.
Stinger's stuff is made to be used with the stock-type ler configuration (center/offset or offset/offset...whatever they are). However that only matters if you plan on using tailpipe(s). If you deviate from that, you will have to do some tweaking.
Any straight-through type of ler is good.
You will have to fab up and weld your hangers.
stinger's exhausts are built to be used without hangers according to what he told me when he was installing my exhaust.
thanks guys!! i heard about using a blow thru design ler, and a dynomax is prob more in my price range. But how do glass packs sound?? I love how they sound in a big V8, but i would tend to think the would sound like garbage in a 4cyl.
also i dont plan on running any cats. I'm not concerned about emmisions, and i know they sound a lot better w/o them anyways. Does this effect where the ler will be, or doesn't it matter
Does your's have hangers, and how does that work? I did an exhaust on my truck, and i'm a little sceptical about running an exhaust w/o hangers, being tht my exhaust fell of once lol
You have to have hangers, how the hell does the exhaust stay on the car otherwise?
Also more is better than fewer.
I have a stout one at the tranny crossmember, one on each ler, and one on each tailpipe.
If you don't run one near the front of the exhaust, it puts a lot of stress on the turbo and exhaust manifold, and can crack the exhaust elbow or manifold, or cause the studs to back out of the exhaust elbow (which is what happened on mine).
BTW I'm running Hooker Maximum Flow lers. Glasspack lers sound like ass on these things.
yeah i didn't really think tht you could judt put the exhaust on without hangers, i think i'm going to take it to the ler shop that did my truck, and have them weld some hangers for the exhaust

is it real loud inside the car, i'm guessing that you have a dual exhaust setup, i was looking into a single simply b/c its cheaper, is their a difference??
Not real ricey? It's not ricey at all.
It isn't loud inside the car, and yes I have duals. I prefer the dual exhaust because I heard a car with the identical exhaust to mine except with a single ler- it had much more of a "tractor" sound to it than mine does. Having two lers really smooths out the sound. Plus I just prefer the looks of dual exhaust.
