Title: Compressor Shopping - Victory!!!
Post by: Romeo2k on January 01, 2008, 12:52:20 AM
I had a thread about this awhile ago, looks like it got deleted or something...

Anyway,
I'm still in the market for a compressor, I may not make a purchase until spring/summer when i can start doing body work on the 'bird.
But in the meantime i've been checking around in classifieds, ads, and what not and have yet to find anything worth while in the $400 range.

I was kind of set on the 4hp 29gal 220v (14.5cfm@90psi) from Harbour Freight, But now i hear that they inflate the cfm ratings on the compressors they sell... and that they arent made very well... Anyone have any experience with them?

I also just got back from a local puppies shop and found an older compressor that looked like it may have potential, But needs some repair as well, And im not sure if it can be fixed...
The compressor was a "3HP Charge Air Pro" by Ingersoll Rand.
couldnt find the cfm ratings, but it had listed all the tools it could handle and named pretty much everything (i would be using at least).
The tank was about 20-27 gal (horizontal), And was rated at 115v.
they were originally asking 249.99, But they put it on 50% off because it is leaking oil.
Anyone know if this worth getting/fixing? It's leaking oil just below the fins.

This is basicly it, this one looks a tad newer~But same layout:

Harbor Freight = made in china by 5 year olds making 10 cents a week.

i dont know about their large compressors but the small one i bought from them is a piece of .
goes thru oil like crazy, constantly cracking sight plastic and when coupled with one of their pos nailguns it barely has the power to shoot nails into door moulding. the stuff they sell is fine for a job or two but for constant daily use in my opinion not worth the savings.

This is the Harbour Freight one i WAS set on:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=92504
I'm hearing bad things about there quality now though...

Otherwise im lost again as to what shoot for locally other than keeping an eye out like i've been doing for used stuff.
Except that lowes has a decent Kobalt 60gal for $399 that looks pretty nice.

Any ideas on the above mentioned puppies Shop find? it should be about 10.0cfm at 90 or 40psi and only cost about $125 at the 50% off.
I just need to know if the oil leakage is a fatal sign?... Or if i should steer clear of it? or what?

Ok,
So i found a killer tip on a Closeout of some 60gal Kobalts at some Lowes stores...
However it hasnt worked out too well for me, I have one more try at it though. :hick:

But you guys should to call your Lowes stores and ask if they have: Item #134819 or Model k7060HFV in stock (Kobalt 7hp 60Gallon)
Some people are finding these compressors (that were originally priced at about $500) for anywhere from $99 to $450 and closeout price right now!

I called any lowes near us and they were all out them except one... Which has a few left at the closeout price of $449?... Apparently the closeout pricing is per store.

My last try will to try and find someone who purchased one for the $99-250 range, And have them scan there receipt for me so i can get them to price match it for me. :hick:

Heres the compressor:

Ok!
I've got a print out of someones purchase of one for $249.
Now, i'm really hoping they will price match...

A couple problems i see is that the purchase was made on 11-02-07 and was made in Texas, Heh.
They should be able to call the store (Long Distance?) and still have the records of the price in the computer though... even though they are sold out.
At least i hope they can.

Heres the in store stuff:

What Brand and Ratings?

Im waiting for a response from someone who purchased one of the above mentioned cheaper and more recently, As well as making room for the 60gal beast before i go try and get one.

I looked at both the Lowes Kobalt and also the red Husky 60 gal at Home Depot and was comparing the two. As a general rule I prefer shopping Lowes but in this case I chose the Home Depot 60 gal for a few reasons.

1) Recommended by my brother in law that framed my house, He’s a contractor and uses compressors a lot and this is what he uses at home and it has been working good for him for 5 years.

2) SOME of the Home Depot 60 gals were duel cylinder compressors (some of them, same price, same color, were only single.. odd! I asked and they told me the duel cylinder models are the new ones replacing the singles) all the Lowes Kobalt were single cylinder. I opted for the duel cylinder for $100 cheaper than the Lowes single. It shouldn’t have to work as hard as a single.

It has been set up in my pump house now for almost a year and has been used for an Impact driver to run 5/8x4 lag bolts into the side of the house to hold the deck on, Spraying the inside of a 1600 sq foot house, Nail guns and just general all around spraying things off and has been flawless. I heard horror stories of compressors loosing there oil and burning up so I check the oil in the sight glass regularly and it hasn’t lost a drop. I sprayed the entire living room (till my arms couldn’t take any more) then passed the sprayer off to a friend who finished the room off and it took maybe 60 sec of running for the compressor to catch back up with us.

So far I’m extremely happy with the Home Depot 60 gal upright. It’s exactly what I was looking for.

Odd.. Home Depot web site lit it as not avalable.. only the 80 gal.
I see your in Washington (no idea where Lynnwood is though)
I KNOW they have several in Longview, also 2 stores in Vancouver and one in Jantzen Beach in portland. All have them in stock

Oh wow...
I did a google search on that compressor, It isnt even showing up on the home depot website at all for me...
Thats an great compressor for the price. :hick:

If i cant work out getting one of the 60gal kobalts for under $250, I think i'll shoot for one of those Husky 60gals (If i can find one).

Thanks for the heads up!

...
That was a huge upset.

Dad and I took a 30min drive to the downtown everett lowes to pick up one of those Kobalt 7hp 60gal for under $380, And they had just sold the last 2 already. :punchballs: :punchballs: :punchballs:

The computer was showing one left, But after some searching the employee comes out with a manager, and says its in the back as a return with a faulty regulator and they cant sell it to me.

Every other store in the state is supposedly sold out except for returns (which they wont sell).

My search continues...
I stopped into harbour freight while we were in everett and took a look at the 29gal i mentioned above... It truly does look badly made.
I picked up a gravity feed spray gun on sale for $10, A 5" cut off wheel tool for $6 and payed a little more for a 50ft goodyear hose... But the $10 ones looked like .

The spray gun actually seems pretty nice... its usually about 39.99 when not on sale, Hard to test it though when i dont have a compressor yet, heh.

Anyone have any advice on the Campbell Hausfield compressor at the puppies shop for $125, That's leaking oil?
Any ideas if its an easy fix or not? it would be a great deal if i could fix it... It puts out a little over 10cfm.

Heres a pic of basicly the same model and where its leaking from:

It's leaking just below where the fins start and connect to the lower base.
(Sorry, I dont klnow the exact names of these parts yet...)

I've got a portable dual tank CH that i use on the job.
Its the oil-less compressor. I've run it 6-8 hrs straight pretty much daily for almost 7 years now.
I was a little worried when I bought it, but It's been very reliable.
Mine doesn't run on a 15 amp outlet though. which was the reason I bought it
Other than that, great comp. for the money. not sure if the quality is still the same.
I checked out some of the newer Chs and they don't rate as high as mine as far as SCFMs

I would guess it needs a new gasket, unless the motor is cracked. or warped.
if its all one piece then its probably cracked.
how well did you check it out?
did you run it?
how much oil does it leak?

Here are a few pics of my compressor, which I am quite happy with, but I would probably get a bigger one next time...

I would reccomend this one to anybody that is looking for one for the occasional job around the house...  Sandblasting cars and alot of rusty parts makes it work though.

Yea, For some reason compressors nowadays have low CFM ratings... Im not sure what's going with that...

And i havent done any thorough testing on the unit, Ill try and stop by here soon and do that.

The only reason i knew it was leaking oil is because the 50% tag mentioned it.
I ran my fingers around all the areas until i found grease remains, Which actually didnt seem like very much... Just a thin layer all the way around the circled area.

It didnt seem like it would come apart, But it may disassemble from the bottom up.
I really am hoping it just a seal, And would like to give it a shot... But with it being from a puppies shop... im pretty sure ill be stuck with it if its not fixable.

After Doing some more research:
It looks like the oil leaking puppies shop compressor would be a bad idea, As it seems to be leaking from the Vent crankcase and may need extreme repair to the piston and pump.
Also, the cfm ratings would probably be more in the 6cfm range since its a 115v.

I'm really not interested in the harbour freight compressors anymore, Due to the bad quality things i hear of them.

For some reason none of the local Home Depot carry the 60gallon Husky Compressors... So i dont think i'll be able to get one of those.

The new Kobalt 60gal seems just as good as the last model and even quiter (76db!), It has a cast iron setup, Built in the us (Possibly by campbell hausfeld?) And has a surprisngly lower everyday price of $399.
I'm very interested in this one, And it's basicly my last hope at this point for the 10+cfm output in this price range.

Of course i would prefer a 30gal... But i would much rather buy a compressor and not have to worry about it for a very long time, heh.

Heres the one im probably gonna get unless something shows up locally:
http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=138336-71025-KLA3706056&lpage=none
I think this would be my best bet, And my options are very limited around here... What do you guys think?
Title: Compressor Shopping - Victory!!!
Post by: daminc on January 06, 2008, 10:20:23 PM
your probably making the right choice for the money.
It rates pretty high in the output range.

My rule of thumb is buy the best you can afford at the time.
you'll use it for the next 20 years. even if you bought another one somewhere down the road, i'm sure you'll find another use for this one also
Title: Compressor Shopping - Victory!!!
Post by: Romeo2k on January 06, 2008, 11:36:39 PM
I've also just found out i can get a 10% off coupon, And possibly even purchase a 20% coupon from ebay, So this would bring the cost down to $350-395 including tax depending on which coupon i used!

The time is soon coming to make a compressor purchase.

I was just in Sears to pick up a shop vac, and took a look at the 60gal floor unit they had...
It's really ALOT heavier and a bit larger than i was expecting, I had only previously been seeing up to 30gal sizes in person.

I'm at the dilemma of where i would really much prefer the 30gal size with wheels, But i would like to have the power to run sanders and paint sprayers.

This is the one i had originally picked out:
http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=138336-71025-KLA3706056&lpage=none
But, they havent had it in stock for a couple months locally...

The 30gal in the kobalt i had previously picked out has pretty low cfm output, especially with the huge dual cylinder motor it has on it:
http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=215921-71025-KLA1683066&detail=desc&lpage=none

But it mentions its dual voltage 120/240~Factory wired for 120.
Would it get higher ratings if it were wired for 240?
Title: Compressor Shopping - Victory!!!
Post by: daminc on January 23, 2008, 07:37:44 AM
That is probably the rating for the 240. Although I would ask someone at the store.
Title: Compressor Shopping - Victory!!!
Post by: Romeo2k on February 01, 2008, 04:19:03 PM
Oh come on...
I've been checking the lowes website daily to see if they have gotten any of the 60gal in stock, So last night it finnaly shows that they should have some.
It's late so i wait 'till this morning to call and confirm, But before i do, I check the site again to find that theres no sign of any kobalt compressor at all... except 1 result for the 60gal which now has a price of 89.97! i get excited and click the icon, But the page cant be found? :punchballs:

WTF is going on?
So i call like 6 of the nearest stores and ask if they have the item number in stock, They cant find it in the system.
I ask if they have ANY 60 gal compressor at all 6 of the stores... None have them and a couple said they are clearing out the kobalt brand???

So basicly i'm back to screwed locally.

If anyone stops into lowes any time soon, could you pass by the compressors/tools and see if they have any closeouts on kobalt stuff? i wonder whats going on.

I was just thinking about this thread and wondering if you had bought yet.
Was a Home Depot at Jatzen Beach Saturday the 2nd and they had 6 of the 60 gal Husky's
Was at Home Depot on Padden Parkway in Vancouver on Friday and they had 3.

Oh wow!
Last time i had visited the Home Depot site looking for 60gal's, they didnt have any listed...
But now they do have the 60gal Husky listed, and they even say they have some in stock at our nearest store.

Hmm, i was kind of set on the kobalt, But it's giving me so much trouble to try and get one. :punchballs:

I went into our local lowes to find they had the 80gal and 30gal with a big empty spot for the 60gal...
I ask the employee about the 60 and get the ussual "We will get some in eventually" answer.
No sign of any closeouts discontinues, And the employee was none too helpful or knowledgeable on the subject.

I'll go have a look in store at the Husky, I'm hoping the noise levels are low... The kobalts 76db claim was a huge plus for me since the compressor will be so close to the house.

Owch!
Looks too late for me, The Add to cart is faded now, Didn't even notice it!.

Oh,
And has anyone tryed to self haul a 60 or 80 compressor? like in a truck or van?
And how did that go?
Currently ive got my mom's '89 caravan (lol) with both back seats out, A dolly and a few boards... Hoping this will accomplish getting a 60gal home.
Am i out of my mind? :hick:
I'm almost positive this wont work with a 80gal, But for some reason i seem confident a 60 will, lol.

hmm,
Well it wasn't giving me the add to cart option, And i noticed in your screenshot that you hadn't selected a store.
So after playing i went ahead and deleted all my cookies from the site then went back and denied it from setting any, And then the add to cart option was there like you said/showed.

Bummer is...
I signed in, Added it to cart and went to checkout and it did some internal check and came back with "Our real-time inventory check found unavailable items in your shopping cart. We'll save these items in your shopping cart for your next visit to Lowes.com".

So looks like it's a no go.

And yea, I'm a bit concerned about noise because i rent out the bottom level of my parents 2 level house.
So i've got my mom, dad and grandmother to worry about noise wise.

That shows the 60 gal cobalt for $89.97
Under a hundred buck's I would buy two!

I hauled my 60 gal upright in the back of my truck, 40 miles at 70mph with 4 cheep tie down straps holding it up on the small pallet it comes on sitting on top of 10 sheet's of 3/4 plywood. Was a bit nervious the straps would come loose and the wind would blow it over out the cack of the truck and into the grill of that mini van that was tailgating me. I stopped halfway and checked the straps and they were all tight. No problems at all.

Just got back from about a 40 mile round trip to the rainier lowes with my new kobalt 60gal compressor, Which is the only store within 30+ miles of us...? that had the 60gal in stock.

Yesss!. :hick:

Well,
It was a crazy wild chase to get one, I was willing to pay up to $400 w/tax (My Budget for this) at this point with how much trouble it was to get one.
The husky was available... But so tall! and heavier than the kobalt.
I also heard it was fairly noisy.
I had wanted the kobalt since i laid eyes on it online anyway...

Anyway,
For over a month i had been relying on the website to keep me informed of whether or not the stores had them in stock, Then i would call and ask further, But then something happened and none of the kobalts are on the website anymore...

So i've been calling pretty frequently the past few weeks, with many let downs and false info on there inventory of them.
This past friday the seattle store said they had got 10 in! I couldnt make it in that day so we went the next... And they were sold out?!
The man at the seattle store says he cant keep these things stocked, they sell like crazy apparently.
Then i call my nearest lowes and they start telling me they aren't carrying the 60gal anymore...
Then i call the everett store and they tell me they just sold the last (Grr), But checks the state inventory for me, And the Rainier shows 3 in stock!
I call and confirm, They say they have 2...

So i talk dad into going down there with me, I run over to "Tool World" And i see it! a 60gal on the floor, Woo Hoo!
The employee is there and says thats our last one, And it's our display. So sorry we can't sell it. (WTF)

Im bugging him and bugging him to sell me the display, He gets his manager, The manager says he cant sell the display then checks the computer and it shows 3 in stock...
They Disappear in the stock room for like 10mins.

They come back and say they cant find any?!... I'm saying over and over ill take the display, we drove a long distance to get here, The other stores have sold the display, blah blah.
The manager finally says:
"Heres what i can do...
This display has been here since about july of last year (LOL!), If your willing to take it (...I've said over and over i would) i can give you 10% off the price and let you have it, as ive been told weve sold the displays before."

I'm like I'LL TAKE IT.
So he gets the younger employee to haul it up front, It has a bag on the front with whats supposed to be the accsessories that come with it i guess? i only know of the rubber feet (which it was missing, no biggie) bu when the kid moved the pallete he found a 200psi water pressure gauge and threw it in the bag thinking it went with it (Freebie!).
BTW, the compressor was DUSTY!.

I have a Home Depot 20% coupon, store owner/manager denies it, But i also have a Lowes 10% and they take that and stack it on top of the other 10%.

We go out with 2 employees, My Dad, And I and takes all 5 of us to load it on it's side into my moms '89 dodge caravan(ROFL).
We have a very bumpy ride home as my moms van is ready to retire soon.

Such a pain to get one of these things! And apparently you cant trust the computers inventory at lowes.

with tax i paid about $351. :hick:
