Title: My gift to me: T-56 swap
Post by: pro-five-oh on December 29, 2007, 09:23:48 PM
I'm starting to go nuts with my Cougar again. AOD to T-56 is the plan. Here's the list of parts, what am I missing?

I'm also getting a new exhaust: long tube headers, X-pipe with cats, Magnaflow (quiet) catback and whatever pipes are needed to make it all work on a Cougar.

Comments? What else am I overlooking?

you will need the correct clutch pedal setup to work. i dont think the hydro unit can be made to work. i dont have it in front of me either though. the t56 is a great tranny. i love mine. i still plan on selling it and picking up a 00' R t56. its gearing better suits the modulars. the cobra and viper t56 will work great with a 5.0 car so you cant go wrong either way. i eliminated the reverse lockout (very easy to do) because i couldnt realy see a need for it. made the install a little easier and quicker. im not sure if th D&D conversions for 5.0 cars have the lockout or not.

re: TC pedals. Yeah, that's what I thought. Now I gotta find a se from a V8 Mustang, and find them soon. :)

What's the reverse lockout?  Its that some solenoid that doesn't let you in reverse?

yeah. i just took the selinoid off and removed the slide pin and spring that lock the tranny out of reverse and re installed the selenoid. its not hard to wire up to use it though. it was just easier not to. alot of guys wire it up to the brake lights. you can get an rpm activated switch for it as well. thats what i was going to do. so far i have managed along without it fine though.

Ok I did hear about that. I could wire it up to one of the dead switches on my Turbo Coupe tri-switch panel (fuel, firm ride, power antenna) and just make it an on/off deal.

But I might just not use it like you did.

I also found the 2003 Cobra shift  is pretty common, that's probably what I'll use with my SHO boot. Hopefully they are the same color...otherwise its dye time.

I just ordered my T56 kit from D&D the other day. I went with the Zoom clutch from them and the Pro 5.0 shifter. I am hoping to do the motor and trans next week. D&D is going to build my driveshaft after I take some measurements with the trans in the car. I still need to find a clutch pedal as well.

i brought my FRPP aluminum driveshaft over to a local fleet pride and they cut my driveshaft down for me for 60 bucks. they can do both aluminum and steel shafts.

Yeah they offered to make me a driveshaft, but the guy doing the install for me knows a guy that makes nice driveshafts locally.  But you should tell them to keep your info handy, if they had it when I ordered on Wednesday I would have bought the kit with the driveshaft.

This will make them money in the future. :)

This might be a stupid question, but does the factory speedometer sending unit (auto) work on the T56? And does anyone have a picture of the shifter location in the interior of the car?

Supposedly the VSS works fine.

The shifter location is just like a Turbo Coupes. Nothing changes except the shifter can go into a 6th gear. :)

Just got off the phone with D&D and they said try a sensor from a 94-98 Mustang.
I installed the clutch pedal assembly last night along with the steering column. Today I hope to have the engine and transmission in the car and maybe running tommorrow or Sunday.

the harness on the tbird "should" plug right into the sensor on the tranny. if memery serves me well they are the same. why they didnt put the electronic speedo in the stang sooner is a mystery to me...
