Title: The New Toyota Commercials
Post by: EricCoolCats on December 12, 2007, 10:45:56 PM
They might be regional but over the last week or so, Toyota has been deluging the market with their year-end Toyotathon commercials. Can't go more than 10-12 minutes without seeing one of them; there's about a half dozen in all. They involve people trying to get rid of their cars on purpose, to have an excuse to buy a new Toyota. One guy pushes his Blazer off the top of a parking deck; another guy drops a steel beam on his Chevy pickup; another guy ties a rope around his Ranger's bumper so it gets pulled off a boat.

Has anyone else seen them yet?

And if you have...are you as pissed as I am about them?

Yes, I've seen them, and yes, it makes me want to ram Toyota's off of the road with my Interceptor's push bars!

Yeah, I've seen them....

My thoughts on Toyotas.  If the only car I had to drive to get to the other side of the country for some emergency was a Toyota.....I'd sell it, walk to the airport and buy a plane ticket to get to where I needed to go.... :p  Ok well maybe not....but Toyotas are my least favorite manfacturer after Honda....

I have not seen those ones yet! I hope I don't!!! I'm madder than hell just reading this.....

In my eyes....VTEC was one of the most overrated things ever. Move over, Toyota has now claimed that spot. Bleh. Honestly every time I see ANOTHER camry or ANOTHER avalon I shake my head and feel sorry for the driver for not knowing any better, or caring any better...whichever it happens to be...and I'm thankful I'm me and not him/her and sitting where I am and not where he/she is. :shakeass:

Toyota owns 20% of my workplace. Yes, they are WAY over rated. Let em sell em so people will finally realize what kind of junk they STILL make.

If VTEC is so over-rated, why has the entire world of Automotive Manufacturing copied the idea? Every car on earth with VVT can thank Honda for the innovation.

It's still the last thing on earth I'd buy. But Toyonda got where they are honestly (aside from escaping the UAW) whilst our favorites handed it all over to them. The Big Three (as if) have been asleep at the switch for three decades. They're not the golden car companies people think they are, but you can't say they don't deserve the status they've gained for themselves.

It'll take some time for all of these great new domestics to creep into the minds of the buying public, but they have to work at it just as hard as the puppiesanese did. Remember, they were little more than a joke when some of us were kids.

Oh they certainly have earned their reputation I'm not denying that man. They DO build good stuff that lasts. But it seems like the mentality of most people is that EVERY thing else sucks and isn't even worth their consideration.

That and I HATE cookie-cutter bellybutton cars with no soul at all. (Course thats hardly a big surprise why else would I drive this thing?) And that's what comes to mind when I think "Toyonda" lol (I love that!!!)

And VTEC.....well I guess the ricers inflating their um...egos so much because they had VTAK YO!!!!! just got to me a *LITTLE* lol.

I've seen those. Every morning I see the one where the guy buries his car in snow so the plow takes it out at least 3 times within the 15 minutes I watch the news.

I don't care for Toyotas. Back in 1999, my grandmother traded her '90 Topaz in on a Corolla. That Corolla is the biggest pos I've ever been in. It is worse than the '95 Neon my mom had back in the day.

And honda can thank Giovanni Torazza for developing it back in the 1960s for Fiat.

I can't stand the  car commecials. Any of them wether it be import or domestic. If I wanted to go car shopping I would drive my butt down to the local dealer and make and buy the one based on what the car feels like not what they want to tell me.

I get the point of the commercials and, taken at face value, I can see how some would laugh a little.

When you start to peel back the layers, though, Toyota is really saying that older American cars are essentially worthless and people need to buy a Toyota to have anything of value. It's also a slap in the face to all hard-working American car builders. I don't recall seeing puppiesanese-bashing car commercials from American car companies, at least for a long time. That doesn't need to happen in order to sell your vehicles. You can do that with a little more class. It's just another way of Toyota sticking it to us that they want to take over the world. Toyotas may be made in the U.S. now, but whatever. Follow the money. Where does it end up?

Can you imagine the uproar if a U.S. carmaker built cars in puppiesan, then ran commercials over there trashing puppiesanese cars to buy American?

And I'm just loving how these idiots, especially the Hollywood nutjobs, think a Prius is going to save the world (Michael Jackson has one...with a chauffeur. WTF?!). They totally forget that Toyota builds some of the worst gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs on the market, don't they? Ever see a Sequoia? My God, that thing is frickin' huge...makes the Expedition look tiny.

So yeah. Toyota can stick it. Here's hoping snowplow drivers get their revenge this winter. ;)

P.S. If Mr. Opportunity knocks on my TV one more time I'm going to choke the living shiznit out of him.

lol, Mr. Opportunity. Honda discounts nothing, bfd.
Now that you explained it, I fully understand where you're coming from. I've noticed that in the new car commercials, manufacturers ususally dump on their old models. The first example that comes to mind is the Dodge Nitro commercial where the broken down car asks for a jump start and the Nitro completely destroys the car. Did you happen to notice that the car was an old Dodge. Something like a Dynasty or Acclaim, I can't remember. I do believe that these Toyota Commercials are the first I've seen where people are purposely trashing identifiable cars.

I do think though that as car people, we can recognize makes and models just by seeing a headlight. The general public can't do this. They see a guy purposely destroying his old suv for a new car, while we see a guy destroying an American Chevrolet in favor of the import.

Maybe Toyota is doing this to combat the likes of Mazda. In one of their commercials,  the guy chooses a Mazda 6 and doesn't understand why anyone would buy a Corolla. Meanwhile his neighbor closes his garage door and you can clearly see a mundane gold Corolla sitting inside.
