How many itmes has this topic came up? I have been trolling though treads to find out if someone has a length yet posted.
The length of the 5.0 sefi serpentine belt with no smog is what? My brother in law says its a 76k6 belt so im starting to think he is right. He deals with mustangs and they are the same pully setup so maybe at worse case i can do the string thing.
Master blaster found this drawing a long time ago from somewhere but the length is not on here. I modified his drawing to illustrate what i am doing.
I may have to let the tensioner lay on the area in red instead of on the top part of the belt.
ahh master blaster,, i think i found where you found that drawing!!!!
does this look right to everyone,,?
the water pump to crank belt arrangement is different with the short belt.
it looks like everything still rotates the same.
Yeah, looks like the rotation is the same to me, too.
Also, reading that text, those belt lengths are for underdrive pullies.
Do you have a link for where you found that diagram?
yeah, i had to drill back into my temp folder to find it.

I agree though, it appears the info is applicable to underdrive pullys only.
anyone????
The mustang brackets are different there tighter to the motor. Forget what size I used I have u/d pulleys and a/c delete and also the #s wore off the belt. Wrote it down somewhere but don’t remember where. I took a rope ran it around my pulley and measured what I needed.
got to a local parts store with some tools.
play hide and seek for the belt.
If you use the rope trick make sure you hold the tensioner in the correct location or make sure you subtract about 2-3" from the length of rope to get the right size. Then be prepared to make several trips or buy several belts. Trust me I work at a parts store and deal with this almost everyday.
That belt routing works just fine. I want to say I just ordered the A/C delete belt.

I did mine per your first post when my smog pump locked up and burnt the belt off. I'm still running this way without any issues. I'm not sure what the belt size is. I drove about 2 blocks to Advance Auto and told them what I wanted to do. They left me try belt until I got one that worked.
It's actually the other way around...I had mustang brackets on my XR-7 and the p/s was so close to the battery, I had to have a little patience when checking my p/s fluid...that's definitely not the case with the 5.0 Birds/Cougars stock brackets.
Yup, true...
Not absolutely sure, but the '86 Stangs may use same/similar bracket to the Bird/Coug???? Seems mine did...
Use the string/rope trick, works(held the tensioner to mid travel while marking the string overlap with a Sharpie)... I got the correct belt first try...
Tom
I come up with 79'' bypassing the smog using a string. That is with the idler aimed at the 5 o'clock direction. I bought a 77'' belt and will try it out tomorrow.
also got trans fluid / filter / oil/filter / fuel filter and plans to empty my cat tomorrow.
BTW, i also have a neat bracket that holds my laptop by using a bracket i fab'd up that is bolted to the bottom of the console. Pretty steady and pvits so it can be swung around for the passanger to use as well. The bracket is basically a piece of aluminum 3''x3'' angle iron.
If it works let me know :D
I've always wondered if running the shorter belt put stress on the alternator.....
Smog delete on my '88 with underdrive pulleys was 79".
MAYHEM is correct but.........with or without underdrives, 79'' will work.
in my case I decided with a 77''. To make the 77 go on, i had to remove some of the aluminum on the tenioner housing where the little stop nipple prevents any further counter clockwise motion. In the meantime, a 79 will work but best to use 78. The 78 is what i would have found to be turn key but since i had no open store at the time, i decided to make the 77 work.
I just took the tenstioner off, hacksaw'd off some of the metal so the tensioner would continue to rotate about a half inch more CCW.
My belt is 77'' and looks great.
so,, things done to the 20th today are
-Short belt installed
-Air silencer removed (nearly impossible with cornering lamps:D )
-Oil/filter change
-trans fluid and filter change
WTF GUYS? I had to drop my stinking cross memeber to remove the pan.
-Catalytic gutted
ANOTHER WTF- my catalytic had this big ass weight haning on it. Its gotta be the stupidist ive ever seen. Anyone else here remove that big ass heavy weight?
I'll have to buy a 78" one and try it. Cheaper than buying a eliminator pulley :hick:
Ill betcha 78 is dead on. once you rotate the idler ccw and see what it is that stops you from going any further, you will see what part of the idler i hacksaw'd off. i took a small chunk of aluminum off which gave me more CCW motion. That equals a smaller belt.
let me know what you come up with though,, it would be nice to have this documented.
I'm going to try it in the next couple of weeks unless I get an air pump eliminator bracket for Christmas :hick:
this isnt going to help but heres my setup

Yeah I still have A/C ;)
Me too I had to do the same thing because that crossover pipe from the passenger side manifold doesnt give you enough room. Since I put in my H-pipe I've dropped it again and it was much much easier. Dual exhaust FTW. The part # on my belt is 25-060864 its routed just like Innes's except I still have power steering and AC. My best friend and I did the smog pump delete at the same time he got the part # from TCStangs for his, so I bought two of em and it didnt fit my car at all I had to buy 6 belts and then bring back the ones I didnt need.
