Title: Texture for custom a-pillar
Post by: booksix on December 07, 2007, 01:25:13 PM
I'm just getting to the finishing stage of making a custom a-pillar/gauge pod from my stock a-pillar and a dual gauge pod for a 94 mustang.  I have them bonded together using abs sludge and once I'm done sanding I need to figure out how to get texture back on all of it.  Anyone doing this and have a good way of getting a stock Ford looking texture back?

Textured Spray Paint. It cracks after it dries. Not exact, but it looks good. Then paint/dye whatever color you want over the cracked paint.

There are vinyl repair kits that contain grain patterns...that's probably going to be the closest you'd get to a "perfect" match.

Yeah, I heard of the vinyl deal...  How does it work?  I considered getting a piece of vinyl with a close grain from the upholstery store but then realized if I pressed this onto my wet paint I'd have a backward grain!  I almost need a 'negative' grain...

Right, that's what vinyl kits have. They're a "positive" grain. I've seen them in stores...I'm sure they're available somewhere online also.

Most of those repair kits only have a very small piece of that positive grain stuff. I tell you cover it in vinyl then you have the texture. You can make it form to that might need to heat it up in the hot box first.

I don't think I want to add that much material to my a-pillar.  Plus there are so many curves around the gauge pod, I'm not sure I can cover it smoothly.

I wonder if I can just buy a bunch of the grain pieces...?
