how is it driving them in the snow? this will be my first real winter with one (i grew up in florida).
If you don't have decent tires....forget it.
I can get by with decent all season tires, but don't try and get anywhere fast.
As long as the traction-lok works you should be fine.
Then again if you've never driven rwd in the snow.........have fun :hick:
it's got new tires on it, but i was actually thinking of getting a set of snow tires for it.
it's got to be better then the ranger. i drove that my first winter here and that thing is a joke in the snow!
Hopefully it is a 5spd then you can just take off in 2nd that will help. I know once down here we got 12" of snow and I got around in myTC just fine. It is all in how you drive and how many morons are out with you.
Get some snows,it will help ya tons.
Snow tires FTW!!! With a set of snows and two cylinder heads in the trunk I never lost traction under normal driving habits.
mine is only bad up hill but that was because of ice and my BF goodrich traction t/a are ok i didnt have to much of a problem though
I did it with py tires for two winters. Takes some getting used to. I'm actually surprised how well my ranger is doing so far.
Definitely get some good snow tires, preferably narrower than the stock 225's - maybe some 205/70R15's on a set of 10-holes.
A half worn snow tire is better than a brand new all-season...
I actually did very well, on old dry rotten tires.
Get a 4WD Ranger and put the Bird in the Garage....Thats what I did
It's funny I drove my RWD Cougar all over with no probs in the winter and what do I do the first snow with my FWD Eclipse... hit a curb!
I have a TC now... w00t. Been one wheel peeling it for many of years. The traclok does make a difference. Still have a tow strap in the trunk incase something bad happens.
My cougar never had a problem in snow. don't think there would be much of a difference between the 2.
No trac-loc but good tires.
I dont think you should be in the red anymore:D
I cant even add to your reputation either. I wonder if everyone adds to your reputation, it would take the red away. It is kinda unique though!
hahaha! i've stopped caring. thanks anyway... it's a lovely thought.:D
for the rest of the coments...
i'll deffinitely look into a set of snow tires. i hear that the bridgestone blizzaks are really good... at $94 a piece, they'd better be.
as for the 4wd ranger... i'd love to, but i don't have the room and my wife would kill me if i bought another vehicle.:hick:
Just make sure you get them for all 4 wheels. The rears are ok but it will handle better if all 4 wheels have the snow tires on them.
I wish mine where under $100. Find a set of Turbines (or fav 15-inch wheel of choice) and they will be even cheaper. I regret sending a set of low mileage snow tires to the yard but nobody wanted them and I needed a roller.
jus keep out of the boost! hard wire your waist gate open if you have to. mine is a pain in the rain at ten psi. I dont want to think about snow! (shudders)
Its easy to stay out of boost, be light on the gas pedal.
Seems like people have a harder time driving a car these days, and need assists.
All I can say is it's sad to hear of another TC OUT of the garage for the winter... :shakehead
I guess to my other post I can add this. It takes you to put your brain in gear before you get in the car. Then the whole time you are driving the car you need to pray that no one will hit, bump, smack,or whatever to your precious TC. Don't forget to pray that you don't hit any black ice or anyone pulls out in front of you. Also Boost is your friend in the snow. Think about the Dougnuts you can cut while boosting 15psi.LOL Just use your brain and pray and you'll be OK. Hopefully the bird will come out fine as well.
:iagree:
People think they need 4wd in the snow. Why? Because they can't drive for shiznit. Most people really don't know how to handle their car or what to do in an emergency situation. It's sad. I don't need stability control, traction control, or any other electronic that keeps ME from driving my car. I'm the cars master, not the other way around.
I can drive a Tbird/Cougar in the snow and I did for many winters. The silver car survived, the 84 XR-7 did not....that is why I don't drive them in the winter....I hate killing them.
They are fine in the snow. The snow doesn't hurt them the salt does. Believe me Chuck and I know about salt, living in the Midwest and all ;) . Right now by me all the snow is melted off the streets but the streets are still white with salt..........
\
Yes it is sad! But around here most people think because they aer in the 4X4 that they can go any where at any time. They really need to learn to drive all that extra makes the Bad driver feel comfortable. WTF? They need to teach the dumb asses how to drive then they can for go all that . They need good ole seat of the pants to brain connection and to use that info to tell them what they need to do. I'm with you on this one forget all the driving aids just learn to drive!
Exactly, i took one of my freinds home the first snow we had lastyear in the bird, and he was freakin out! (he drives a truck)
he was amazed on how i could control the car. peg leg and all.
i took her out for the first time today. there was no snow on the ground, but a little bit of ice on my neighborhood streets. she did just fine. i drove my wifes car the other day in the snow. it's an 06 pontiac g6 gt. the traction control on that thing is a joke. i'd rather not even have it there at all.
here's what i had to take care of while she was warming up.

and my truck is under there somewhere too.

Ah you flatlanders :P
I don't even bother trying to drive my Thunderbird in winter. Besides the fact that it has no heat, I wouldn't make it anywhere.
Just this last week we had a storm, and my tempo with snow tires had a hard enough time making it around, and that was even avoiding the really steep hills. I still couldn't make it up the road to my apartment.
Plus with my bird I often have a hard enough time keeping the tires from spinning on hills when it's wet outside.
So yeah, not even gonna risk that.
it's pretty hilly round these here parts too. lol.:hick:
I guess you have never been here to Branson Missouri. Calling me a flatlander is like calling you a Bird/cougar hater!
.
Used goodyear eagle ultra grips from a michigan state police car all the way around my bird this year. Theyre over $160 apiece new. I paid $100 for all four, I did the mounting and balancing. Still got some decent meat on them.
Like this?

It's a lot steeper than it looks. This is a hill right off the end of the road to my apartment. I wouldn't have been able to walk down it, although people were driving up and down it in 4WD's with no problem.
now thats impressive. I wouldn't drive my cougar down that.
some spots are like that.;)
I'm glad Illinois is the Prarrie State :hick:
Welp... that's reason enough for me to not ever go to WVA! Not that I ever had a reason too. Geez, I hate snow. Only thing I hate more than snow is that freezing rain BS. What kinda ungodly shiznit is that?
My buddies back in AL tease me all the time with their friggin 70-degree weather. Punks.
We're getting some of that freezing rain storm tomorrow, sweet :hick:
This is that same hill looking in the other direction. Heh, I picked the worst place in town to live I think.

BTW I took these pictures after that big snowstorm last wednesday. I couldn't get up to my apartment (my car was parked by the white house on the left side of the picture above), and this is why:
I'm getting along just fine.
I picked up a set of goodyear eagle Ultragrips
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Eagle+Ultra+Grip+GW3+EMT
But i go for ultimate tires....you might not need the runflat ones LOL!
these are probly the best winter tires i've ever had... mounted them on an old set of snowflakes.
My 265's are doing just fine so far even when we had the snow storms I didn't have much trouble getting around. I guess cooper cobras might be a decent all season tire after all, now if only I have trac lock.
You talking cooper cobra GTs?? If so, NO. I have a brand new set on my chrome wheels for summer. i drove around through the snow on them for about 3 days and put the ultragrips on. it was as dangerous as a rhino on linoleum with the cobra gt's on. the snow traction is okay, but the ice traction is nonexistant.
Thats exactly what I did, took my spare snowflakes and got used ultragrips on them, I paid $100 for the four, but since I work at the tire shop, I did the labor. Theyre off a Michigan state cop car. They have a slightly different tread pattern than those ones though. I think Goodyear updated the tires for this year or something.
