I give you the new daily driver! Retired Oregon State Police car #202, 2001 Ford Crown Victoria P71 Police Interceptor.
4.6L SOHC V8, 16" steelies, stab-proof seats, drunkard rear seat, 140MPH Certified speedometer, cruise, tilt, A/C, power seat, and spotlight included.
Last 3 for right now. I have to transfer the title, pay the sales tax, transfer my plates, and all that. Then I get to grab some gloves and play "what can I find in the interior?" :hick:
More pics later today ;) :burnout:
Nice. There's a couple of those at the salvage yard I go to.I should pull the gauges from them.Good Ebay stuff. What are you going to do with the roof and rear seat?Paint and seat swap?Any plans in your head yet for the old Vic?Marauder exhaust,17x9 wheels.Just give me the amount of your budget and I'll tell you what to buy.LOL.
ELWOOD (Dan Aykroyd): You don't like it?
JAKE (John Belushi): No, I don't like it. (Elwood floors it and jumps over an open drawbridge)
JAKE: Of course, it's got a lot of pickup.
ELWOOD: It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters, so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile, or what?
JAKE: Fix the cigarette lighter.
Chuck that's f'n hilarious!!;)
Deft. a sharp car, pretty nice, must've been halfway taken care of.
Are you gonna change the rear seat?
I hate to say to throw on Cobra R wheels, everybody does them, but..they do look good though. Myself, I'd probably try to find some 2000-'01 alloy wheels for it.
Does it have the gas tank protection too?
Nice car, I'd rock one. :D
One of my favorite movie quotes ever:D . I'v actually driven over that bridge too, when it was closed ;)
I cruised around all morning with the Blues Brothers soundtrack playing in the cassette player :hick:
The story just keeps getting better! First it got 25MPG on 87 octane swill, then the insurance (full coverage, collision, massive amounts of liability and PIP, low deductible) is only $400/6 months! Then I went to get the title in my name, and I didn't have to pay sales taxes! That's another $700 saved :hick:
Lucky:D
When ya going to change out that rear seat?;)
SWEET! All I have to say is baby moons! Or find a sheriff car in town and steal those chrome centercaps from it.
Nice. Ya gonna keep the spotlight and wigwags? I'd prolly ditch the spotlight (they're illegal here) but I'd keep the wigwags (they're illegal here too, but if they're not on nobody knows they're there - in fact the T-Bird has wigwags). I'd definitely keep that bumper guard...
Oh, and DEFINITELY wear gloves when searching that car, and do it very carefully. Can't tell you how many needles I've found in decommissioned cop cars. It's our shop's policy to wear gloves when working on any used police cars, even those still in service...
I used to have dozens of those center caps along with all kinds of other stuff - front door trim, rear door mechanisms, spare wheels/tires, two aluminum driveshafts...
Then I gave it all to a guy that volunteers at a local Mountie detachment as a favour when I decided I'd never own a CV (the Lincoln killed that idea). I had considered keeping a set of tires for the snowflakes, but they were all snow tires and the T-Bird will never see snow again.
you dont hafta steal them. the plastic, castle lookin ones are standard issue ford parts on the ranger/explorer. the flat, metal chrome ones came on rangers too.
all you need to retro fit is the proper lugnuts. both styles of cap snap over the lugs
:burnout:
I always dreams of those for my black bird.
set of ranger center caps and your all set
1st day update:
I got the title transferred, registration, plates, etc, the works. $125 :D No sales tax :D:D
Topped her off (25MPG) and added a bottle of fuel injector cleaner, some new wiper blades, and my steering wheel pad (carpal tunnel :( ).
I spent 2-3 hours going through the inside and trunk (WITH gloves!) and cleaning it out. I found a ton of wiring and trash, but nothing dangerous/interesting.
Started round one of engine bay de-greasing as well.
Tomorrow I'll actually wash it (supposed to be sunny) and change the oil (picked up some Royal Purple 5W20 and a K&N1001).
Next week I'll hit the boneyards for seats, door panels, dash panels, carpet, and a headliner. I need a spare and jack too. And the centers ;)
Why no sales tax? Says the Washington State Revenue Auditor.
Nice car, looks like a lot of fun. Maybe we will see it at Portland?
TED
Cause I bought it from a guy in Vancouver, WA who imported it from OR and already payed the taxes. At least that's what the lady at C&L Licensing said. (He only had it for 3 weeks, and does the group buy/individual sale regularly)
You'll DEFINITELY see it at PIR ;)
What's that stuff on the floor--some sort of spray-on protection? Are you going to put a rug in it?
It's a vinyl floor.
I'm going to put carpet in it after I hit up some junkyards next week.
Nice ride all it needs is some nice rims on it would make a nice DD car.
03-04 Cobra Rims or Cobra Rs or some Mach1 wheels or some other wheels you like.
I spent an hour polishing the hood, headlights, and grill today.
The rest of the car still needs more scrubbing! :hick:
Ordered some parts from Summit too...
Looks nice. I looked at several P71's before I found my Marauder. You will definately get through traffic a little faster in these cars.
Thats one sharp car! I always thought it'd be fun to get an old cop car and just scare people!
Those 16" cop steelies are freakin heavy, I know, Ive changed tires on them.
nice car i wanted one also. but never fallowed threw with getting one.
i want a search light for my truck anyone know where to get one besides dunkin dough nuts? (a little risky lol) oh sorry ociffer thought this was my car. ..
I just got home from a deal ;)
Mint back seat (never sat in, cop car take-out), nice front seats, all the dash panels with NO holes, trunk liner, cup holders, etc.
For $100 :hick:
Pics soon ;)
What parts from Summit did you order. You don't say "I ordered parts" without giving details. What's up with you.DETAILS,Man,DETAILS !!!
They help it breathe better? :D
I guessed that much. #1 mod, make it breath better!!
Yesterday I got an NOS back seat (still in the plastic), and a bunch of parts from a 58K mile 01 CVPI (front seats in gray, dash face, dash trim, all the switches, cup holder/ashtray, trunk liners and trim, rubber trunk seal) for $100. ;)
So today I installed EVERYTHING except the front seats (I just got tired, I'll get them tomorrow). The interior is soooooo nice now! All I need is to get the innards for the rear doors, a headliner with lights, and a carpet kit.
Pics in a few, promise ;)
Here's the pics!
Before & Afters of the old parts and new parts freshly installed.
This is the left dash trim and the main dash trim.
Middle dash trim and main dash trim.
(Yes, the new piece has a mike holder :hick:
Right dash trim.
Cup holder/ash tray/power outlet
The infamous rear seat and NOS rear seat.
Finally, the trunk liners.
I'll do the front seats tomorrow.
looking good man!
If you grab a spare, be sure to get the j-bolt and hold down so you can mount it on the shelf. It really helps with traction having the spare over the right rear tire.
So when you doing a burn out? ;)
Already did one :hick:
The trac-loc works great ;)
Michael, project De-Police Interceptor is well on it's way!!! looks great so far ;)
Wow. You didn't waste any time, man.
Now throw a blower on it!
OK! Where I can find one for cheap? :hick:
I have less then $2800 in the entire car, including a year's registration. I like to keep it budgeted :D
http://www.modularfords.com
Hehehehehe!
The factory true-duals had seen better days (and were 2 1/4" crush bent!)
Soooo...
2.5" mandrel-bent cat-back going under the axle instead of over (the factory pipes neck down to 1.5" and go 90*/180*/90* to fit in-between the axle and gas tank) with Flowmaster 40-series 3-chambers. Topped off with rolled 2.5" straight-cut chrome tips. Niiiice.
;)
BTW it sounds GREAT! Throaty idle, nice acceleration noises, quiet in cruise, and no droning. VERY high quality sounding!

Sounds sweet! I have the same tips on my car, only thing is that they're starting to rust and I've only had them on for a few months..
Drill a small hole in the bottom at the end so water can drain. That's the only drawback to rolled tips.
WHat's your next trick for the Ex- POPO?
Looks great thats one helluva a nice car for that kind of money. Where did you find it that cheap?
sweet. if you decide to go with mach 1 wheels im looking to sell mine. those or the polished 01 cobras. i only have 3 of those though (dont ask). CV is gonna be a sweet daily. i kind of want one now....are the tailpipes designed for that or something else?
Future plans? Well first I have to fix the back seat, it got into a fight with a dozen Christmas sugar cookies and LOST...
Then the carpet kit gets put in (I bought an $89 new one off of eBay) and the grey front seats go in.
Then a little outside work to make look a little nicer.
As for the cheapness, Craigslist and CASH. They go for about $3000-$3500 for similar ones here, but start whipping out $100 bills and prices drop, especially around Christmas ;) That's how I picked up the brand new pair of Flowmaster 40's for $50 too ;)
The tailpipes are 1-off custom built by the "ler Hut" in Kelso, WA. They do awesome work.
And selling Mach 1 wheels? I'm VERY interested! PM me, seriously ;)
The less-then-18 months old Les Schwab "7-year" battery died without warning (duh, they're re-mans!) and rather then accept the $14.58 they thought it was worth, I bought an Optima red-top (1000CA!). Excellent...
I want an Optima.Sounds like you're really getting somewhere with the old girl.
nice work man!!! Wish I had the cash for one of those tanks!
Took a few pics with John's GTO.
Drives great in the snow too!
Test
Well, I installed some new carpet today ($89 from eBay brand new). Also threw in the lower mileage gray front seats. For some REAL before pics, check out page 1, but here's some before's as of starting today. Notice the front seats are blue...
Here's the during's. Check out the 12 gauge slug! Found it under the rubber floor in the passenger footwell. The local Sheriff's Office sent a car out to get it, they were pretty cool and liked my Vic. The Sergeant wants to try to sneak some Flowmaster 40's onto his cruiser now!
Also the rat's nest of wiring I cut out of the floor area. About 2#'s worth. All the trim in this car is soooooo easy to pull! Just pull, no screws or clips or anything!
And here's the finished product! Didn't take that long, but it sure was COLD out today! I also saved about 40#s swapping in a manual driver's seat over the power unit. I'm still going to try and find a better driver's seat as this one has a burn hole and a cut in it (and they cut the harness from it so the Airbag light is flashing!)
All in all, the interior now has $200 invested in it and it's looking mighty good I think. Comfier, cleaner, and nicer for sure!
cool man!!
Just a quick outside "update". The "Police Interceptor" emblem is securely beck on the trunk (I'm still torn as to whether to put the Ford oval back or not though), all of the yellow striping is gone (but not the roof numbers!), the side trim panels are back on the doors, and it's been washed (but not detailed or waxed yet, still getting the grime off to get to the paint!). I just haven't put any "overall" outside shots up since dragging it home...
I ordered up some trim rings and centercaps today for the wheels (decide to keep the cop steelies). I'm trying to get a custom pushbar made for the front (a small crossbar only so I can mount a set of round Hella Rally style foglights). I do need to figure out what to do with the front doors...
I like the idea of the push-bar on the front, but I don't like the idea of putting rally-style driving lights on it. That's a little too hokey for my taste.
Other than that, nice work.
Really? It needs more lighting (they're worse then stock fox TBird/Cougar lights if that's even possible!) and I thought 2 of the small round fogs mounted below the bar would be low-profile enough. Like this:

Wow, that sucked...
Are those the 16" steelies? They have 17's now and them are some heavy mothers....
These are the 16"s. They have 225/60/16 Kevlar lined cop tires on them too ;)
Congrats Michael ! Your car is very nice, i like it ! You are doing a good work there. How it drives until now ? still getting great power and mileage ?
You need a good (loooud) sound system ! but i think you prefer the sweet tone of the exhaust :D
Still drives great! It's so quiet inside with the carpet now, and the seats are much better (not the old ones were bad, but now it's like driving around in a Lazy-Boy!). I'm getting 20MPG mixed/25MPG freeway observed on the cheapest 87 swill I find. Power is good (but it need more, maybe a turbo? :D )
Cars have radios?
I bet a 460 fits................;)
It does! :D A lot better then a 5.4 too...
I'm living with the 4.6 until it explodes, and if/when it does I don't know what I'll do. Part of me thinks 351, but the other half screams LS1 (I know, I know).
I'm itching to see what it does at the track though...
What about a chip? That made one hell of a difference with my 4.6.
The CVN guys say the "MZT" is the next mod I should do (M= Marauder or 04-06 CVPI P71 Airbox with larger MAF, Z= 04-06 CVPI P71 Zip Tube {from MAF to throttle body}, and T =Tune). Except it's $300 for the MZ parts and $400 for tuner and another $200 for the tune! All for what, 10HP maybe?
I think I'd rather spend $100 on a EECV edit that I can use on my laptop to tune with, run E85 with a ton-of-timing, and a $230 K&N FIPK CAI.
But then I start thinking of 125 shot wet kits for $200...
Well, I *finally* took the Porter-Cable to the 'Vic's paint. Not anywhere close to how I want the paint yet, but at least it's looking better and you can't see the "ghosts" of the State Police lettering/striping.
I also took it road racing (just 12 hot laps) and drag racing (15.1 @91.7) yesterday. Got 25MPG on the way to the track too :hick:
looks good!!! I wouldnt mind owning one of those!
Got some daylight pics just now for you guys ;)

looks really sharp!
Needs a push bar :)
That is a really nice car. So what was the switch on the floor really for?
Thanks!
The switch was for turning the brakelights off (or something like that, ask V8Demon, he knew). It wasn't connected in my car.
FYI the GoRhino push bars are very nice. They even offer a full wraparound model that is pretty easy to install.
Nice PI, you should see if you can find a LX console for it.
Well in my quest to whip a 14 out of this boat on the second try I did a little work on it today. Installed the 180* T-stat (the original 192* Motorcraft was still in there!), FLUSHED the coolant (looked like somebody tried to mix the orange and green, I flushed with water, added green, and then a half bottle of Royal Purple's Purple ICE), and changed the serpentine belt (again, still on the original). I also crawled under the car and changed the fuel filter.
Test drive went well, it comes up to temp quicker (because a 180* thermostat opens before a 192* duh ), and it does seem to have a little more get-up according to the butt-o-meter. So now all of the under-hood fluids are good to go and everything is ready for drag racing on Friday.
I am still chasing the horn problem. It'll pop the horn/cruise fuse as soon as you touch the horn, but if you don't touch the horn the cruise won't blow the fuse. Any ideas?
don't touch the horn :hick:
sorry, I couldn't resist.
You try, you really do, but then some jerk tries to kill you by running a red light/swerving/speeding/etc and you immediately try to honk!
my best guess is to follow the wires and see if there is a short somewhere inside the column or where the wires come out of the column. Apparently the power side of the wire (horn) is making too much power.
My guess is the power going to the horn in the engine compartment is shorted to ground. When you hit the button, you send power to the horn and blow the fuse.
Try unplugging each horn and test for continuity to ground and work your way backwards. I'm really just guessing without a schematic.
Clean car looks good so are you gonna keep the #202 on the top of the car?
Greetings from another Panther owner!
Gorgeous car--my dad had a 1998 CVPI, drove it 425k(not a typo) with no problems. :)
Awesome! My 124K is considered "low mileage" in the Panther world.
Nice!
I'm considering buying one for a DD. I'd like to find the shotgun and/or AR mounts for the dash though. Unless the one I get hasn't been drilled.
Why'd you call the cops about the 12g slug?
(Wonders if Mike wants an old Pennsylvania Sheriff's Association front license plate -- that would throw some people for a loop  )
Geez, that cleaned up freaking nice man. :idhitit:
your cvpi looks great man and it did buff out great. On the horn, have you looked for similar wiring to foxs in the car such as a horn relay?
also, have you made the horn manually by putting power on it from the battery?
The wiring should not be much different from our cars but you never know. If the cruise is working fine, then your just going to have to trace out the wires one for one. Soon you will run into the relay.
On older Fords with a cruise servo, the horn circuit runs through the speed control servo. I have had to replace several servos due to this. Also, the clockspring will break too. But your problem is usually caused by the servo having a short. PM me if you want some wiring diagrams.
Thanks for the compliments and tips on the wiring/horns. I need to get a free moment to diagnose it further, right now I'm spending all of my time on other projects! (Getting the RX-7 ready for the autocross in 2 weeks, pulling the stock 2.3T from John's TC, building the 2.3T for DW, restoring the neighbor's 59 Buick, plus work, college full time, and trying to eat/sleep!)
Glad I'm not alone. I get so burned out I come home and do nothing but sit at the puter. :toilet:
I finally got the paint all polished up to my standards. I gave my poor polisher a workout! :hick:
Down to a 14.85, still on 87 octane and still exactly how I drive it to the track :burnout:
That looks good, and makes me tempted to get one for a DD.
A guy over on CornerCarvers converted his to 5speed.
Any idea how much it weighs?
thats farking BEAUTIFUL!!
it looks good!!
Glad you got push bars for it!
14.85 out of a 4,000 lb Vic ain't bad :D
More like 4,500 with me, a half tank, and the swapped in Civvie interior. ;)
are you leaving the back door trim on? or are you adding more trim or taking it off? Those tips look really small
Car looks great Mike. So when are you putting strobes behind the grille? :D
Back door trim has to stay on, there's holes in the door. No front door trim. It's a "proper" cop car look. Plus it leaves room for my giant number plates for autocrossing and road racing ;) (They're going to be magnetized).
The tips are 2.5" like the pipes. I'm torn on leaving them, putting some better ones on, or going to hidden turn downs. I'll wait until these cheapies rust out I guess.
No strobes...yet ;)
Yeah i wasnt sure if you were going to leave it or not. I think Hidden turndowns would look better and give it a more cop car sleeper effect. wheres Carm and his skills
Thanks for mentioning Quality ler Hut!
