I am looking for suggestions for a 5.0 rebuild for my 87 TB. I have the standard AOD and 7.5 rear but I want to build the block for a custom AOD and 8.8 rear. I am looking for a VERY responsive daily
driver. I have purchased an EFI short block for $250 that has the original crank, new OE TRW pistons and OE cam (Not sure what brand and dont care as it will most likely go away). I also picked up a nib Edelbrock EFI intake for $50. If you had a $1000.00 dollar budget what would you build???? I have access to used 302 H.O. heads, used 351w heads and NEW 351c heads still in cosmoline (for a price).
Anxiously waiting to see what you all think.... Thanks!
you can blow $1,000 just in a stock rebuild.
gimme more money! :D
O.K. Lets start with a recommended cam upgrade...
here (http://"http://www.coolcats.net/tech/advanced/ho_conversion.html") The standard HO swap, then the possibilities are endless.
Cams look here: http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?t=16085&highlight=speed+density+cams
As for heads I'd go with GT40 or GT40P iron heads. You can find them on any 5.0 Explorer or Moutaineer in the junk yards. Cheap, plentiful, and much better than the E7 HO or 351W heads. Don't even bother with putting the 351C heads on the 302 block. It's a lot of machiene work and not worth it when so many other heads now outflow it.
Why spend when you can donate to me?:D
Which OE cam? Which pistons; flat or with reliefs? You don't state what the shortblock is out of.....
I am not good at budgets but i will have to say a bigger cam would be nice.
wont the heads have a fitment problem since the plugs go in opposite directions from normal?
no only the p heads have the plugs that need special headers.
I wanted a cam and e7's. Got both, but had to have new valve springs and roller rockers to make em work.
Cam and lifters:$140
Roller rockers:$170
Valve Springs, locks, and seats:$140
E7's: Free! (thx claude)
E7 valve job and seals: $140
Total = To much!
Plan ahead before you buy anything! If you're doing it on a budget then put it all on paper and know that it'll work. That's just a word of the wise.
