Post by: V8Demon on February 20, 2005, 05:47:05 PM
Anyone Know if this wheel came with cruise control?  It's from an 85 Capri.

I don't think so, the cruise back then was on a stalk like the turn signals. :)

Too bad.  I dig the wheel.  How hard would that be to convert your cruise to the one on the stalk then?

Paul,
I don't think any Ford ever came with turn-signal stalk cruise control buttons (I think he was thinking about the famous GM turn signal stalk that was on every GM vehicle for 25 years).  If your Ford didn't have steering wheel buttons, it just didn't have cruise (from the factory).  However, if your car has cruise and you want to use that wheel, I think it might be trick to remove the buttons from some junk wheel and mount them in the dash or console and pull the wires out of the column and re-route them.  That would be cool!  I'd like to see that.  I saw that same wheel in an '86 XR7 just a couple days ago and it did look good.  No cruise, though!  Let us know if it works.

I always thougth of rewireing the cruise buttons off the steering wheel and onto the steering column or dash myself so I could Use a nicer wheel.

I still want the wheel.  Looks like I'm gonna have to hit the junkyard for some inspiration.  I get my best ideas there :grinno:

That wheel never had the cruise buttons installed, and yes, the cruise control was definitely on the turn signal. Most of the early-1980's Fords had it that way, especially the Fox cars. That wheel was an option on 1984 XR7's and even though the sales brochure claimed you could get it with cruise control on the wheel itself, I have confirmed with several owners of 1983 Turbo Coupes that ordered their cars new, that cruise buttons were not offered on that wheel. You had to get the turn signal cruise lever installed.

It might have been on the lincoln forum, but seems like somebody on here(maybe on old board?) had put cc buttons on the dash somewhere.

Hey all,
I stand corrected.  I have just never seen a Ford with turn signal stalk cruise control buttons.  I just always assumed that the XR7's and Turbo Coupes I saw with no cruise buttons in the wheel just didn't have cruise.  But I did see that actual wheel just a few days ago and it is sharp!  I don't think it's for sale, though.  If anybody had any pictures of a custom dash-mounted cruise setup, I'd love to see them.  Good luck with your search, Paul.

I wonder if you could rework the Power Ant, Firm Ride, and Gas switch panel to let you run a cruise through there??  Then it'd just be a matter of making the splicer harness and relabeling the face.  Na, probably easier to just just stick a flat panel in your dash by the radio to mount the buttons in.
