Yeah, I finally got around to throwing the paint at the car. It came out exceptionally well if I do say myself, considering all of the things working against me: First car I'd ever painted, had to do it in a dirty garage, etc...
There was only one problem area. When I first started spraying I did the roof, then the hood, then the trunklid, then started doing the right side. I got about half way down it when paint stopped coming out of the gun. OK, I thought, must be out of paint. I went over to the bench and mixed up another batch, then started spraying again. After a short while the paint started sputtering, then stopped again. I tried cranking up the fluid screw. Still no paint. Tried adjusting the pattern. Still no paint. Cranked up fluid some more. Still no paint. I was perplexed, and was just about to get really mad at the Chinese (the gun is "Made In China" Princess Auto ).
Then I noticed the vent hose for the reservoir was kinked - it was bent double, from the nipple on the reservoir to a "dummy" nipple on the gun body. I disconnected it and tried again, and lo-and-behold I had paint!
Unfortunately, after cranking up the liquid I had too much paint, and a big gob of it came out on the quarter panel. RUN CITY!!!
So tomorrow I've got to sand the runs out and do that quarter panel again. Even with the runs I'm quite pleased with how the job came out...
More pics...
WOW!
Awesome work, Carm.
...and more (this really sucks on dialup)
The last pics show the runs. The amazing thing: Not a SINGLE fisheye on the entire car :shakeass:And no frickin' orange peel either, except on the side of the car with the runs (the spattering, intermittent paint caused it - that's my story and I'm sticking to it), but since I've got to sand and do that part of the car over anyway I don't care :hick:
What kind of paint is that? That looks amazing.. makes me want to just go paint something now!
nice job foryour first my first looked like a big black orange
It's acrylic enamel. The cheap stuff. I wasn't gonna spend a bunch of money on expensive paint just to ruin it :hick:
Sweet. New paint rawks.
Uh, why does it look like you have three tailpipes? :D
Trailer hitch.
Looks awesome Carm, I cant wait to paint my Stang now...
Nice work! You're getting me all excited, I'm planning to attempt mine in the spring.
Looks good from here! Make sure to post up some pics in the sun once you get it all back together. I wish that I had the guts to try to paint mine.
Jim
Nice work dude!
Beautiful!
How long did it take to take all the trim/extraneous items off?
looks good ,man!
why not base coat clearcoat ? why enamel . looks good though.
Like he said Cheap and Base coat clear isn't plus for a beginner it is easier to throw out $50 then $200. Lookin GOOD! Makes we want to start on mine.
Oh, I dunno... about a year or so :hick: The trim was a royal pain in the butt 'cuz it was glued on. The extraneous items were easy, but the challenge in those will be to get them back on.
Ford didn't use clear coat in '88 (Oxford White was not a clearcoat colour).
Actually, with the paint, hardener, reducer and cleaner it was closer to $150. Things are stupid expensive up here in Canuckistan. If enamel cost as much as it did you can imagine what base/clear would cost...
That's not a tailpipe. It's just happy to see you :D
Nice work !!! Are you leaving off the trim between the front and rear wheels.I am.I'll keep the bolt on side trim, but the rest is history.I wanted to clean it up a bit.I should have mine done by Christmas.Yours looks great.I'm glad you're getting closer to reassembly.
Carm! That looks impressively good!!
looks good for a first paintjob. I did my first paintjob on my truck and it was base/clear. pretty much had to be with the flames, lol

I'm going to repaint my 88 turbocoupe over the winter, also. base/clear again because thats the only way to do metallics.
Sucks though because both of them need repainted this winter, but I think I'm going to do the tc first because that will be an easy job while I have a BUNCH of stuff to fix on the truck. Guess it doesn't like 650 ft/lbs of torq through it for 3 years, lol
i used dupont centari paint on mine, single stage, with hardener and flex agent, cost about 250 total. had the help of Tony Sceia. soit came out great, but metallic single stage isn't great as im getting dark spots from stians, booooo

I didn't have to base/clear my tbird, and it was a metalic paint.
just a single stage job, and came out mint.
it must be ez to get enamel still in canada bc the only pace that seems to use enamel is macco. you walk into a paint store it's all base clear . unless were talking rattle can.
Sweet. Looks great. Hell only having to repaint one panel for a first time job is great :D
everyplace up here still sells acrylic enamael. The paint for the bird ('99 bright atlantic blue metallic) came to $146 for the gallon. I thought that was a hell of a deal, considering how much metallic is in the paint. It is a good paint you just have to take care of it.
I'm going to try the Dupli-Color (Color Carm! Color!) paint shop stuff when I get frisky. Lacquer paint.
I was originally planning to paint the lower half of the car gunmetal and have the trim as the divider. Now I'm not so sure about the two-tone. I am also thinking about painting the trim white, then installing it (like the 88 XR-7)
I think I remember reading about the EPA forcing the gradual phase out of acrylic enamel in the USA - something to do with volatile organic compounds (major greenhouse gases). Indeed, even here the instruction sheet warned against using retardant (causes slower hardening, I guess) because it results in VOC's exceeding federal limits. In Canada we don't have such restrictions - I guess we've got more environment up here than we know what to do with :hick:
Better still, I just came in from painting that panel, so now it's mint. Well, almost. Seems that after I took the pics yesterday a fly landed on the hood, then went for a walk. I found him glued to the hood this morning, at the end of his journey (I can almost imagine him walking in knee-deep paint, growing ever more weary until he finally gives up, then croaks - there's a movie in there somewhere, I just know it). Hopefully I'll be able to buff his tracks out of the paint, or else I'll be repainting the hood as well...
Yeah, right, Claude, and I suppose it's "Zee"-twenty-eight, three-hundred-"Zee"-ex, and "Zee"-oh-six, too... :shakeass:
I didn't even think of lacquer - I just went into the paint store and said "Gimme some paint that even an idiot can use". They sold me enamel.
Looks great.
reminds me of when i painted my cougar last. oxford white with wet look hardener. still shines like its wet too. except for the rust spots
