Title: My engine and a few other pics added throughout....
Post by: vinnietbird on October 21, 2007, 10:39:41 AM
Yep.I took out the middle "fins" on the side and added the Cobra plaque, and the top plate I fabbed from a piece of s aluminum I grabbed at the s yard.Shaped it,polished it,drilled two countersink holes.Done.I wanted something different, but I like factory Ford parts when I can (I don't know why, becuase the car isn't "factory" anymore).

Thanks a lot guys.I appreciate the compliments.I like to hear the input, good and bad,so I can see if I've gone overboard or if I'm needing something else,or whatever.I like the intake because it's the only one.....unless someone copies me.One of none Cobra intake.

Post by: daboss351 on October 21, 2007, 03:04:06 PM
See your car is gonna be amazing cause it will be so different from everyone else. Thats what I want with my mark, put parts that no one else has on it, make it special.
Title: My engine and a few other pics added throughout....
Post by: vinnietbird on October 21, 2007, 03:06:18 PM
I like modified factory parts the most, although not everything can be factory sometimes.I like for the parts to look "right" when installed, not just something you bolted on that doesn't fit with the overall look.

'98 Cobra.Genuine Ford part. You have to design your own intake. No copies allowed.

Again, thanks a lot.I don't really polish the parts for everyone to see,I just do it for myself. The hood is down all the timeand, with the car looking the way it does,it's funny when someone does see the engine.I pulled into Autozone to have the codes read, and I popped the hood open and thought the guy who was going into the storews going to trip over something. The polishing is basically free,so why nopt do it.Free fits into my budget just right.LOL.

I'm thinking of Trick Flow. They always looked like ass, to me.

Very nice, though, Vinnie! It's not very often you can look at a 302 and see something new.

You'll have to come up with a new idea now,Thunderjet. As far as the EFI thing,I never noticed that.I may go back with the Dremel and cut out the fins so they are consistant all the way across.

Oh, I wasn't comparing Vinnie's to the Trick Flow. I was referring to his comment about parts that don't jive. The first aftermarket piece that came to mind was the TF.

That is the best I ever scene an explorer intake done. I can’t fathom to think of the time it took you,. defiantly custom. Got to give you credit case the time it took you you could of bought a coated cobra.
Title: My engine and a few other pics added throughout....
Post by: vinnietbird on October 22, 2007, 05:42:13 PM
Thanks a lot Innes. It actually took me about 2 1/2 days.Including the time to cut out the fins on the side and taper the fin's edges for a look that didn't say "homemade".I have always wanrted a Cobra intake, but a lot of people have them,so,I wanted a "different" Cobra intake.I figured since the explorer and Cobra flow nearly identical,it could back up the performance as a "Cobra" intake.I keep using the term, but "One of none" fits this Cobra intake.I like it also becuase it's mine, and it's the only one.....for now.Unless someone decides to make one like it.I hope not, though.

I've thought about it.As I said,my intake plate was made from a s piece of aluminum sheet I found at the syard.I have a guy who can laser engrave and had thought about having the TBird logo put on it,but never got around to it.I want mine smooth an shiny, nothing else on it,and,to let the Cobra badge stand alone.

Sometimes I wonder what I’m thinking but on my explorer upper I put back on the stock 5.0EFI non HO plenum plate trying to make it look stock. Don’t think ill trick anyone but I’m trying.

I like the stock plate as well.I have the 5.0 H.O plates (3 or 4 of them),3 '86 only 5.0 H.O plates, one of them polished and looking good, and I end up going with the fabbed plate.Like I stated,I didn't want to have too much going on with the intake since I have the Cobra plate on there.

I was wondering if I could get a picture of the rear, to get a better shot of those.  I love them!!!

You cut into the stock rear bumper - right?
Title: My engine and a few other pics added throughout....
Post by: vinnietbird on October 24, 2007, 06:51:51 AM
To install tips like that (in the bumper),you have to trim the fiberglass bumper, the bumper brackets  (lower outside 1/4 of it,you'll be losing a bolt on each side),and the bumper cover to fit the tips.I'm removing these tips and installing different ones as soon as I come up with the $100.00 for them, plus the money to have them welded on.

Post by: vinnietbird on October 24, 2007, 06:58:38 AM
Here's the pic of the rear with both tips. The overall look is a lot better with the car painted. My blue car below had the same treatment, but with round angle cut, rolled edge tips. The gas lid on the blue car is from an '04 Bullitt Mustang. It'll go onto the Sport after paint. The burnout shot is from the event that the town put on last fall on Main Stret.A real blast to be able to do burnouts for 3 hours while with other car club guys while the cops, who usually give tickets for such activities, kept the street colsed off for us and watched from a distance.awesome.The engine from the blue car is now in the Sport, but with more mods.

If you look close, you can see my son holding his fingers in his ears during the burnout. The cutouts were removed from the Warlock lers, and it got a bit loud.LOL.

Yes,green.I just figured out how to post pics of my own.I have no earthly idea how to post pics from another site,or Ebay.I ssaw an explorer Sport Trac on Ebay with the color I'm having my car painted. It's a medium green with metal flake. Not lime, not deep hunter green.Very subtle.I get tired of seeing the same old colors all the time, and I really don't want this "gold" sandalwood color either.I wanted a color that isn't screaming for attention.

Im actually picturing it....I think I agree it oughta work well. FWIW thats like my favorite color combo for an Excursion.

Im lovin the tails too vin, reminds me of my friend's 88 Beretta, he put the sqaure vette tips on. But having the bumper cutouts is even better. Certainly a unique ride you've got there.

Also I LOVE that pic of the burnout in the blue bird. First of all that kicks ass that the town would do that, second its just a neat, shot, third seeing your son in the passenger seat there. Ah....someday I'll be doing that and it'll be my son...and that will be very healing for me :(

Just don't rush on the kids.Enjoy the younger years as a single guy.Be ABSOLUTELY ready when you get married. Now,back to the car,I will have the green, but not the gold color.I'm not reinstalling the side trim btween the fender openings.I'm looking for the exhaust tips I need as replacements. The Sport also has new badges (not factory, but still Ford parts) tucked away reay for the paint to be applied. One step at a time.I'm trying to be methodical about it.Trying.

British Racing Green with some nice chrome wheels??? thats what i was thinking about like 1 or 2 months ago might look good on our cars.

What about the Green you want and maybe some 03-04 Chrome Cobra Rims in 4 lug?

#1 engine looks ready to go to a car show

#2 i like the bumper cut with the exhuast tips

#3 the car looks like its in good shape just needs a little paint nice work so far

Thanks Pimp.I have to finish the engine compartment.I have to do some painting, install the coil cover, remove all of the rubber vaccuum lines and replace them with metal lines, and a few other little things. The body is actually in great shape.Whoever had the car before me had it repainted and from what I can tell, didn't really sand it first,so I'm removing a LOT of paint so I can get to a good foundation for the new coat.I have my brand new Hella fog lights sitting on the shelf waiting as well.I'm also FINALLY going to get the sequential light kit for the Sport. That'll rock.My silver Cobra R wheels stay.I had thought chrome, but nothing else is chrome on the car except the exhaust tips,so,I wanted to calm the look down a little bit.No spoilers either. On the outside,I want it to look like Ford could've done it.Every week I'm getting a little closer to the finished project...........not that it will ever REALLY be finished.

Mines got more shine!:hick: :flame:
Really though, those intakes take forever to get smooth! I worked on my explorer intake on and off for two months, and I went as far as removing all the cast marks on the upper and lower. I'm shure you found out how bad aluminum stains your hands.
All that work I did and now I have a typhoon intake going on and I'm selling the explorer setup!
Title: My engine and a few other pics added throughout....

I can see myself in the intake, and,it only took me a copuple of days of off and on work,so,good enough for me.I wear those rubber surgical gloves when I mess with this stuff,so no stained hands, and no angry wife for getting aluminum stuff everywhere.

As far as the side view of the Sport, let me check.

I suppose it may sit a little high, but those are the factory springs. It doesn't bother me.I never drag the front spoiler, and never catch my lers  or any other part of the chassis on speed bumps.I like it.I have thought about bringing the front down about an inch someday, but I'm still gathering my thoughts on that idea.

By the way, since that pic was taken, the bodywork on this side has been done, and the interior completely swapped.I also re-aligned the driver door after swapping the lower hinge.Lines up nice and pretty now.
