Title: Tire Size question
Post by: Crusher on October 17, 2007, 12:55:25 AM
What is the max size of tire that I can get for my 1986 Mercury Cougar LS.

I want to get the Goodyear Eagle GT II  since there on the car but shot and look good.

What would be a good set up with the car, I was thinking making the back bigger and leave the front 1 size smaller :S Any helpers?  Also I have the stock rims with the nice hub cabs, well I like them :S No one esle seems to lol...

By the looks of it the tires on those rims are about as wide as you can go.  Don't go narrower on the front.  Thats just asking for a poor handling car.

215/70/R14 is as big as you can go on the stock steel wheels/wire wheel covers.

I had 225/70/R14 on the back of my car when I first got it.  They actually fit pretty good.

That's a bit big for a stock steel wheel. I'd be worried about them squirming under load.

when i bought my 83, the lady had 245/60/14's on it.... they were really wide, but DIDN'T rub on the hard turns.... the only reason i didn't replace them with the same size is that the factory size was 1/2 the price.....  but i think if you have 14's... that's the biggest i'd go.... it did look badass with them :)

Well since those wheels you have aren't stock width...you can't really compare.

245's are WAY too wide for the stock 14" wheels.

Yeah, they're 5.5" wide.
215s would be the widest I'd go.
