Title: Twin Turbo
Post by: capitlj on February 17, 2005, 04:04:07 PM
i am looking to go big, really big.  And put a twin turbo on my 302 cougar.  I know all about having to get lower compression internals to handle the boost but does anyone know where i could get the exhaust side of things.  Or a whole kit???

I am thinking that it would have to be custom made. You might could get some exhaust manifold off of a tc or xr7 and weld them in. You should prolly try to pm andrew beetle. He is making a twin turbo 5.0

Haystack has got it exactly right.  Custom... custom, custom and more custom.  There are 5.0 TT kits, but they include just the turbos and some of the plumbing.

are you going all new or trying to do the budget thing? how are your fabrication skills?  i have an article on a econemy build. 2 turbos from turbo coupes (one for each side of the V8), manifolds flipped over and alot of home made/custom piping, cutting plumming....

I have some fabbing exp.  Mig and oxy/ace welding.  Gonna try tig soon.  Put it this way if i cant figure it out it cant be done.  it just might take me a week longer than a mechanic.

if a 351c with 2 twinscrew blowers can be done than i have no doubt the turbos could be done. they fit in a fox stang, they will fit in a tbird...

Hmmm.  From the doors forward they're the same.  Does not make a difference.  Same chassis... everything.

Well if your realy thinking about going the twin hair blower way then go read Mike's page.  http://www.toohighpsi.com/BudgetTT/BudgetTT.htm

By far the best info for doing it your self.
I em building a twin kit for my kat with 2 stock GN turbos and using the MegaSquirt fuel injection setup. with stock 351W lower intake and custom twin throttle body  uper setup with 16 injectors insted of 8.

The forums over at turbomustangs.com is definetly the place to go.  They have a seperate area for junkyard and diy builds.  I haven't had any actual experience but I plan on turboing my bird also, and have been looking on that site for like a year.  A lot of good information.  Just do a lot of searching.  Chances are most the questions you need to know have been answered before.  Also, read the stickies in that section.  A few companies make complete kits for fox mustangs that should fit, but they cost a fortune.  For a cheaper route, B&G turbo makes affordable headers for twin and single setups.  I hear they are really good.  The rest of plumbing can be made faily easily with madrel bends from summit, just cut and weld to get from point A to point B.  Upgrade the fuel pump, injectors, and get a pro-m blowthru MAF.  Oh, as for the motor, a stock HO lower end is fine.  Just about everone on turbomustangs says the block will generally crack before the stock pistons, rods, crank goes.
