Title: Stock turbo is blowed up.
Post by: Superdavesds on October 15, 2007, 09:56:53 AM
I decided to seperate the exhaust on the cougar and found a lot of oil. Took the turbo apart and I think it is too bad to rebuild. It has a ton of endplay. I found some scoring on the shaft next to the turbine and inside the turbine housing where it would run.
OK correct me if I'm wrong the stock Garrett turbo (I named my son Garrett) is a t-3 at a 42 trim. What are the other specs that I need to know about. What type of recomendations do you guys have for a mild upgrade that wont hurt spool time and will be good for 250 to 300.

250-300?  you can do that on a t3.  otherwise, a nice t3-to4e would be a good upgrade... even a holset wouldn't be a bad choice.

I think it has 42 along with Garrett casted on it. I'll double check it. What is a good trim to go with a porteed and polished head, intake, and otherwise stock set up.

Send it to Charlie at Evergreen, He will fix it right up. Thought mine was beyond repair. He even turned it into a T3/T04E.
He is a great guy and does nice work.

And the winner is: (awkward silence).......Sleeper T-Bird
It says A.R. 60  MR11 right on it. I'm not so sure about the exhaust though. Its not as conical as the compresor. I'll measure it tommorrow. To be honest with you I'm not even sure what that means. I understand the formula just not what it does for me. I've got a lot of reading to do.
How much is Charlie at Evergreen going to cost me. I found a rebuild kit for under $100, and I found a used T-3  50 trim for say 2-250 from a friend in Toledo. I trust him pretty well.

I had him do the t3/t4 thing and clip the turbine, and generally rebuild the entire thing and it was a little over $500.

He bored mine out for oversize bearings and balanced the rotating assembly.

Sounds like he did a lot of work for you. I just want a basic rebuild for now. I have a lot of other work I need to do before a lot of upgrading. You got a web link so I could get a phone number or e-mail address. I went to Garretts web site and it said the price of a standard rebuild was around 150 plus shipping. That sounded pretty cheap. I would like to look into your guy still.

Cracked where? 90% of T3 exhaust housings are. If it's just around the wastegate hole, don't worry about it.

It,s around the hole but it is spider cracked really bad. It looks to me like it would make the waste gate leak real bad. No worry I can fix it.

The next problem is the center section is rubbed up pretty bad where the piston ring seats at. The shaft had a little wear on it right around the ring. I get mixed reviews on this one. Some say don't worry about it just rebuild it and put in an oil restrictor if it smokes. others say theres no need for a restrictor as long as the oil drain is clear. and some say to throw it out and get a new turbo.

Hey Superdavesds, The website is "Evergreenturbo.com". I just put the turbo I got back from Charlie on today. It really works nice.
I got to say this  thing spools up really quick, I was quite impressed. I didnt even set my timing, Fuel pressure, TPS or Idle yet. (just kind of winged it so I could drive it, been dead for 2 years)
He was worth every cent I spent for him to rebuild this thing.

My turbine housing was spidered too. Let me tell you this too, "You get what you pay for" Ask me how I know?
