Title: 5.0 exhaust ?
Post by: irv on October 10, 2007, 02:03:17 PM
new to the board and just sold a mint 86 5.0 capri. am picking
up an 88 XR7 sat. i have a set of nos shorty headers and
nos ford mustang 4 cat h-pipe. what else do i need to put
true duals on. can you use the mustang hangars and a GT
catback ler and tailpipe setup. what about O2 sensors
and hookups and h-pipe rear hangers. i'm looking for all
the details i can find from you who have done it.is it worth
doing all this to the stock 5.0 or wait till i get an HO motor.
the cougar is something new. i guess a lot of mustang stuff
works on them. ive had the first gen. cars and a 94. i probably
will have some technical ?s any help would be appreciated.
this is taking a long time because i type w/2 fingers and am
computer illiterate. thanks!--- irvin toms

You should have come here first. I have been looking for a Capri. But everyone I find has rust, cracked floor pan, or some other problem.

I have full exhaust with stock mustang headers on my stock 5.0 and I definately think it was worth it.  Just think of it this way, if you go up to a HO, it will be one less step.

Check out this writeup as it should answer any questions you have: http://www.coolcats.net/tech/advanced/50dualexhaust.html

The wires for O2 will have to be lengthened for a stock H.  Mustang hangers should work too, but I'm not quite 100% positive.  I'd like to help you more, but apart from the stock headers, my exhaust is custom without an H or X pipe.

I lengthened the O2 harness and left my sensors alone.I had a set of midpipes made to fit my car.I'm using Mustang X-Pipe,Mustang tail pipes (lengthened towards the rear to reach me rear bumper). The only non-Stang pieces are the midpipes.I cut the hangers that go to the crossmember off. They were more trouble than they were worth in my own opinion.
