Title: Project Goldmember!
Post by: blu84302 on September 26, 2007, 09:31:58 AM
:pics-stfu:

Anyway, I'm building a 302 to put into an 84 TC.  It's a shame I know.... :flame:

Anyway, so far the bird dead.  Blown motor.  So here's the motor I'm building.

It's a 302 with 180,000 miles.  I pulled it from my old 84 5.0.

SPECS:
COMP Cams Xtreme Energy Flat Tappet Cam:  CCA-31-238-3
Duration at 050 inch Lift:     218 int./224 exh.
Valve Lift:                  0.493 int./0.500 exh. lift
    Lobe Separation:              110 Degrees

Heads:  E7's with a nice valve job.
Intake:  Wieand Sealth
Carb:    Holley 1850, 600 cfm
Headers:  Jegs!!!!!!! Cheap longtubes 3in collectors
Paint: New Ford Grey

Anyway,  I've got a bunch of parts lined up for it and really the only thing I'm waiting on to finish putting it together is the valve springs.  I thought I could get away with stockers but the machine shop guy said NO!

So here's some pics.  Feel free to ask questions or flame me for destroying a TC.

Why not stay EFI?  Well I guess you dont' have all the ancilliary parts for it.

It will be nice to see that car moving again though.

Be sure whe you repaint it you do it in the factory color ;)

I didn't know that was a condition of the sale Chuck!  Well, I guess I could... mainly because it would look bad with this!  :shakeass:

Also I threw in a pic of the header pipes.

I think I'm going to go take a ride on the Harley and take some pics of the bird.  It's not at my apt. at the moment.  I figure it would be nice to have pics for my thread.

Tell me, why does it feel like I'm a post w now that I have a thread?  I really can't help but watch it every so often.  There is so much I want to add.

This is near-identical to the next car I plan on building. I will be following this! And yes, pics of the car please :hick:

Stick or auto? I'm planning a Mustang T5 in an 84 TC behind a carb'd 87 302...

Also:  Chuck, I would've kept the car a 2.3L but it's my first big project and I don't know anything about those motors.  Also the wiring was trashed.

And it's going to be an AOD.  Shift kit/rebuild in the spring.  (ratchet shifter???)

Got the car and the motor at the same garage.  Claude and Jim pulled the 4 cylinder out today and now we've been cleaning the engine bay.  Here's some pics for your enjoyment.

That engine bay looks very solid.  Good luck with it!

Post by: CougarSE on October 21, 2007, 02:10:54 AM
Took some time on that engine bay getting it clean.  We ran out of Greased Lightning so we started using dish soap diluted in a spray bottle.  Worked amazing.

Right now we are taking a little break from it.  Here in a bit we are going to bolt the transmission on to the motor and probably pull the car in and drop it in the car.  I think John is undecided on paint choice for the engine bay so we may paint it after its together.  I say to keep it gold.  Alot of the paint came off with simple scrubbing.

Yeah Paul that engine bay is rust free.  Hell the underside of the car is in amazing shape.

Well we are heading back into the garage..  Working through the night.

Title: Project Goldmember!
Post by: Chuck W on October 21, 2007, 07:35:55 PM
Glad to see progress.

Not much paint stays in the engine bay once you really clean them.  I think it's all just usually overspray from the factory anyway.
Title: Project Goldmember!
Post by: blu84302 on October 23, 2007, 01:01:53 PM
A little update:

Spray bombed the engine bay universal gold.

Dropped in the motor and forgot about the headers.  Pulled motor up to get headers in and they would not fit.  So looks like no longtubes for me.

Other than that not alot of progress.  Still waiting on some parts.  I have 1.6 roller rockers and an H pipe on the way.  Still need an electric fan and a few other parts.

Anyway enjoy some pics.

You should do up those valve covers in gold now as well.  It would look nice in that engine bay.

We f*cked with those heades for hours.  The driver side just wouldn't fit at all.

I'm just as excited as John is to get it running.  Its so close to running.  bunch of little things need to be hooked up.  The wiring harness needs to be modified for duraspark, 3G, and an electric choke.  won't be hard.

My thoughts exactly!

Those louvers will look badass on there! Which wheels are you sticking with, the 8 holes or Snowflakes? I know where an 84 Cougar is that same color, I like it.

Louvers don't fit, they are not for a tbird.  I spent a little time this afternoon cleaning up a few engine bay parts and bolting them back in.  Wiring the 3G is next then tearing apart the stock 5.0 harness after that.

Alright, if you read the ProForm thread then you'll understand that I had problems with my roller rockers.  Got that taken care of with a trip to jegs.

I swapped out the ProForm for Crane Cams Blue Racer 1.6 Ped. mount rockers.

Overall quality is excellent and I will recommend them.

Here's an update.

It's just about done.

-I've got the carb off to put a new linkage shaft in it.  I needed the TV rod hookup on mine.

-A little bit of wiring, and a couple of gages.

-Brakes!  Don't know if i need a master cylinder yet but they don't work.

-Floor shifter.  I broke mine. :(

-I got a new (used) exhaust system.  Hooker super comp headers, Mustang H-Pipe, and two flowmasters.  All in good condition ready to bolt on.  220 bucks off of craigslist!  w00t.

Anyway, Here's some pics for your enjoyment.  I can't wait to post a video of her.

Title: Project Goldmember!
Post by: P71 on November 14, 2007, 11:02:48 AM
That's coming together nicely!

As for your shifter, I can't remember, are you running an AOD or a C4? Have you thought about an aftermarket shifter?
Title: Project Goldmember!
Post by: blu84302 on November 14, 2007, 11:06:19 AM
It's an AOD.  What I'm really thinking about is a 5 speed.  That tranny has been in and out of more birds then you'd believe.  This is the 3rd bird that tranny has been in, and it's org. a lincoln transmission.

So pedals, 5-speed, and new gears for my 8.8 are what's comming this spring.
Title: Project Goldmember!
Post by: P71 on November 14, 2007, 11:20:54 AM
You need an AOD shifter then, the 84-86 TC floor shifter would be missing a gear.

But yeah, do the 5-Speed! That's what's going into my 84 project. I got lucky and started with a 5-Speed car though ;)

Title: Project Goldmember!
Post by: 32VFoxBird on November 14, 2007, 11:32:21 AM
i may be wrong, but doesnt an AOD shifter only have 3 positions for the forward gears? i understand its a "4-speed", but OD is elec/hydraulically controlled.
Title: Project Goldmember!
Post by: thunderjet302 on November 14, 2007, 11:44:44 AM
Yep *D*, D, and 1. The AOD is all hydraulic and the AODE/4R70W are electronic.
Title: Project Goldmember!
Post by: blu84302 on November 14, 2007, 11:52:13 AM
The 84 floor shifter from the TC reads PRND21.  So it's still the right detonates for an AOD. It had a C3 in it with the 2.3L.

Guys must not be use to these 4 eye girls. ;)

If all else fails the project will wait til i get a ratchet shifter. :(
Title: Project Goldmember!
Post by: Beau on November 14, 2007, 11:59:22 AM
From what I've read, and seen in person, the shifter from a TC auto will NOT work on an AOD.

I've got one of each, they don't match each other's detents, although they look similar.

Anyone else corroborate this?
Title: Project Goldmember!
Post by: blu84302 on November 14, 2007, 12:01:25 PM
Taken from coolcats tech page.

"All C3, C5 and AOD transmissions will use the same kind: with 6 detentes, or notches. You cannot use a shifter meant for an A4LD (4-cylinder) transmission, like those used in 1987-88 Turbo Coupes, since they have 7 detentes."
Title: Project Goldmember!
Post by: P71 on November 14, 2007, 01:21:48 PM
Yep you guys all got me. I was thiking of the A4LD shifter in the old 87 TC auto DD we had for years.

So he needs the easy shifter ;)

:burnout: :burnout: :burnout: Well, since Claude said it I'll make a small update.

She does live.  However she still needs alot of work.  The motor runs great!  She did leak some oil and alot of tranny fluid, but that's all taken care of now.

The only issue that's keeping this car from being 100 percent done is the transmission.  My AOD isn't holding up to well.  It's shifting horrible and probably won't last much longer.  I've got to add about 2 inches to the TV rod so I can adjust it more.  Right now it's at it's max adjustment.  Hopefully I can get her working "good" til I can get all the parts needed for a T5 swap.

Motor runs great.  I was going to wait until I got a video before I posted an update.  I want you guys to here her so bad.  She's so sick!

Edit:  I used the word I in there alot.  I do want to give alot of credit to Claude for letting me use his truck while this was going on.  And also for being a big part of this whole project.  Thanks bud!  You're bird is next!

Post by: blu84302 on November 30, 2007, 10:35:13 AM
Well, she drove to work good.  It needs front springs replaced, also swaybar bushings, and stablizer links.  That'll take care of the suspension issues.

Still needs a shifter... (or 5 speed) I haven't decided  yet.  The tranny works but it's sloppy.  Maybe futher adjustment will do some good.

Cooling fan needs installed and relayed up.  Plus a few lights and maybe even the CB radio.  (Can you say whip?)

And last but not least.  She left me stranded for the first time today.  I got in her to go home from work and she wouldn't start.  I thought i flooded her and I did... But after I took out all the plugs and cleaned them I checked for spark.  No spark!  So I go to the parts store down the road and bought a coil.  That didn't work.  So I go back and have them check my Ignition Module and it failed.  Swapped it out and was on my way.  I probably have a bad body ground to the module.  I'll re-do tonight.  Plus a little more tuning.

Engine bay looks great as well. I had valve covers like that on my 88 till I rebuilt the engine and added cast Cobra valve covers. The chrome ones look great but are a PITA to keep clean. I swear I polished the  things once a week :hick:

Correct, that is where the "kickdown" connects.  The Tv though needs true movement of the throttle.. that connection actually floats.  It starts to actuate at about 60% throttle.  Not gona work for a TV.

Here's what the motor sounds like.  You can't see it because it's night time in a parking lot and I have no hood lights yet.

5mb so dial up beware.

Update:  She's been a little bad to me lately.  Just last night the ignition key locked up on me.  Had to drill the mofookie out!  Not cool.  It as 7 degrees outside and I was in a Speedway parking lot.

All good now.  Still runs great except for the heater only works on low and the duraspark issue.

Bugs are to be expected.  Once I replace everything... it'll be all good.

I have a question regarding your cam you listed 0.493 int/0.500 exh. with stock bottom end. did you have flat top or dished pistons installed? If I'm not mistken the most lift on a 302 ford is 0.488int/ 0.488 exh. due to valve damage to the pistons. I was just curious.
