Title: Tryin to cheap out as usual--new rear end bearings...?
Post by: ZondaC12 on September 14, 2007, 01:39:24 PM
Alrighty. Well I got the 3.73s on ebay, and found a highly and widely recommended local shop that apparently is very good with rear end gear swaps. I guess theyre also reasonably priced, gotta call and find out.

With 120k on the clock for this thing, is it likely theyre going to want to replace the bearings? http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=RAT%2D304K&N=700+4294925134+4294839047+4294862355+4294900886+115&autoview=sku (http://"http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=RAT%2D304K&N=700+4294925134+4294839047+4294862355+4294900886+115&autoview=sku") I found that kit, is that good enough if it needs freshening? Only thing it says it doesn't include are axle seals and I know neither of those are leaking.

Just something I never even thought about that was brought to my attention at a cruise-nite late this summer, wanted a 2nd (or many lol) opinion(s).

The axle seals may not be leaking, but if you're going to all the work of replacing the gears, bearings, etc.Swap out the end seals as cheap insurance.

Oh,PLEASE get rid of those whitewalls.LOL.

Swap out the seals.  What's the point of throwing it back together only to have it leak in 3 months?

If you're replacing the gears I would highly recomend you replace all the bearings and seals while you're at it. Otherwise those new gears may wear themselves out before their time. If you're gonna do it, do it all and do it right.

Stop being cheap.

Hooked..................NOoooooooo.They do make good swings if you tie a rope around them and hang them from a tree.Or,perhaps they would look good on a '77  Lincoln.

You wont get the seals out without destroying them..  ;)

I've had a few high mileage rears apart and they have looked fine.  Just depends on the life it lived.
