Title: gf's new car
Post by: bhazard on September 12, 2007, 01:23:18 AM
Her first car at that.

92 Dodge Shadow ES Turbo, scored for $200, 80,000 on the odo.

Biggest problem with it was that well, it didnt run. Fixed that today with an ECU out of a 91 Spirit turbo. Had some issues on whether or not the 91 ECU would work, since they switched to a new generation in 92. It was next to impossible to find a 92 auto turbo ECU since the Turbo-I was very rare in 92, being replaced by the V6. Plugged it in, cranked for a few seconds, then fired right up, settled right into idle. Runs like a champ! Pretty cool for not running for however many months, I think at least 6.

Changed the oil and drove it down the road and back real quick. Its pretty dang peppy. The 2.5t has something like 210lb ft at only 2400rpm. The PO said the wastegate rod was unhooked, but it wasnt, builds about 7 lbs of boost, stock. I can bump that up to about 12 lbs without an intercooler. At 14.5 it cuts fuel, theres a way to bypass that though.

Anyway, its still got some problems that need fixed before its actually streetable.

The front end is screwed up on the passenger side, toed in pretty good, PO said he slid into a curb last winter. Im hoping its just a bent strut or control arm or something.

A bunch of trans fluid leaked out of the drivers side the first time I jacked the front end up. I was told its the seal on the CV axle, havent really looked at it closer yet.

Hook latch is missing a spring.

Could use a new sound system. Its got an ancient Pioneer unit (DEH-245) and stock Infinity speakers. The stock infinity speakers had their own mini amps on them that I had to remove and bypass, aftermarket headunits overpower the amps and blow them out.

Other than that, just a tuneup and some fluids.

The exhaust is rusted gone just before where the ler is supposed to be. I think Im gonna just run a straight pipe out the back, my gf actually likes the sound with just the cat, I do too. Sounds really good for a 4 banger, just like our 2.3's. Ideally I would ditch the cat and run 2.5" to the back with a straight-thru ler. Also looks really simple to fab up an exhaust for this car. DP comes down in the middle of the car, pipe goes straight back a ways, then a 90 degree bend, a bit of pipe, then another 90 degree back, simple bend over the rear axle and straight out.
