Title: Intake Manifold
Post by: thunderjet302 on September 11, 2007, 04:35:24 PM
Well I'm looking for a good, used, performance intake for my 306. The stock one, well, sucks, since it flows about 150cfm and the GT40P heads flow close to 200cfm:hick: . Any ways since most of the street performance intakes will deliver pretty much the same power on my combo (within 5 hp or so) I'm judging what I want based on looks:D . So here's what I'm looking for:

Cobra Intake

Tubular GT40 intake
(I know the Explorer is the same but it just doesn't look as nice to me.)

Edelbrock Performer 5.0

Trick Flow Street Heat

If you guys happen to have any of them lying around I'm interested. I'd like to pay ~$200 for the intake as I'm on a limited budget right now. If you have anything of interest pm me. Thanks.

You would think:hick: . I tried to go that route but everyone thinks the EGR version is made of gold or something and they want $350 or more for it. For that much I'd just buy a brand new Cobra........

I polished my Explorer upper, and it looks better than a Cobra intake.More compliments as well.Wait until I finish my next one of a kind intake plate.People will be asking for them.Get the Explorer intake and call it a day.You probably won't find the others for what you're wanting to spend, although,I hope you do.

Where? All the egr Explorer intakes I've seen have been going for $350+ on ebay and craigs list. The wreakers by me don't even have 5.0 Explorers that I can get the intake from. At $350 I might as well buy a brand new Cobra which is only about $20 more.

It would work but not very well. The operating range (1,500-6,500 rpm) is too high for my cam (1,200-5,200 rpm) range and how high my AOD is willing to shift. I'd probably loose low speed torque with that intake.

It's not that the Explorer is butt ugly it's just not as nice looking as a Tubular GT40 or a Cobra.

Now if someone did have an EGR Explorer intake sitting around for $200 I would be interested. But who is really willing to part with one for that much?

Like I said,my Explorer upper is polished with the recessed areas (the "grille") painted black. The picture above looks like it was painted silver. And painted very poorly.I put about 8 hours of labor into polishing mine, and you can see yourself in it.Looks aftermarket.

I've read through his website and talked to him already:D . I know the ported stock HO intake would make about the same power (the same if not a bit more torque down low) as an unported GT40 style intake up to 4,500 rpms. It's just that last 500 rpms where the GT40 shines. I'm just, well, not that great at porting:hick: . I know he could do my manifold for me but it costs ~$220. That's why I'm trying to find something that flows as good for a little less, if psooible.

Man I sound like a cheap ass:wtf:

Just trying to give some options.  You mentioned something in another thread about your car shifting at 5000 RPM's at WOT.  You may wanna do something to increase that number a little once you open up that intake to take advantage of your heads and cam.

Oh no problem. Like I said I'm just trying to be a cheap ass ;) . Just wondering but on your old engine combo (the SD, E5, ported stock intake) did tmoss port the intake? I was just wondering how it ran with it. The trans shifts at 5000 RPMs at WOT with the TV cable adjusted all the way back as far as it will go (per the instructions on, hell, I can't remember the site but it's been linked to here many times:hick: ). I think to make it shift any higher I need a shift kit.

Well hell I just got a EGR Explorer intake for free:hick: . It was in the junk pile at my mechanic friends shop. I detail engines for him (when he installs engines in old cars) and he said I could have it for free after I paint the 351C he's installing in a guys 71 Cyclone. I'm just going to have to spend a lot of time sanding it and making it smooth before I paint it like I did to my HO intake.

I'm not bashing you guys who have an Explorer intake. It works just as good as a Cobra or GT40 and I just like those better because they're prettier. Now I'm just going to have to try to make mine pretty :hick:

I did the porting.  The job I did was OK, but I'm sure I could do much better now.....My old setup pulled like a son of a bitch!:hick:  At least to about 4800-5000 anyway.....New one pulls better from about 2500 on up.

"painted very poorly" I guess you don’t like my work. I thought I came out nice it’s a JY part the was washed sanded primed and painted w/aluminum engine paint.

thunderjet302’ I cant agree more the cobra and tubular do look better but they are going run you some coin. Make you feel better what I tell my self is the explorer intake will except the stock plenum cover for a sleeper look

With the new pics posted of the explorer intake,it looks like it was painted well.I'll never be a fan of aluminum paint though.

i meant you wont find anything other than an explorer or cobra for $200. performer 5.0, systemax, track heat, etc., are around $350+ used, and around $550 new.
