Title: trunk question....
Post by: 420ttam420 on September 10, 2007, 03:51:54 PM
ok i plan on putting subs in the trunk i got a box that will fit flush against back seats but those bars that twist and act like a spring for the trunk are in the way....is theire a way i can remove those and make sure my trunk aint gonna fly open.....or can i use some hydraulic pistons for a hatchback to make it open......because i want more trunk room when i have my woofers in just dont want to have trunk fly open on me driving down the road.....

those are to help the trunk open. Without them, you will have to hold the trunk up, and its not gonna pop open, there would be nothing to move the trunk. The weight of the trunk lid once those are removed will surprise you.

It wouldn't be hard to fab up a couple of supports and install some weak struts.I say "weak" because the trunk lid isn't very heavy.

I was only going by experience with my brothers escort, I figured because the t bird is older it might be heavier. All i know is they hurt when they fall on your head....

Not a heavy trunk lid,but yes,it'll still hurt the head if it comes down on you.

I'm going to be doing that (removal of torsion rods) to my car too. I have a set of struts from a fiberglass canopy of mine that got wrecked in the last storm we had here. Just got to get around to doing it.

I had it suported and I was doing something knocked the rod and BAM. God I've never swore so much and so loud in a period of time! I had a lump for days.
But yea taking them out permanently is not gonna hurt anything!

Not heavy,you must be kidding.
I had to take mine out a few years back for my subbox and that trunk lid is dam heavy.
You'd need some fairly decent hatch struts to lift it.
If someone ever comes up with a design i'd love to see it.
Right now i'm using a 3/4" piece of mdf cut to the proper length that i put between the corner of my trunk lid and the inner body lip of my trunk to hold it up.
It works but is kind of crude.

They're only about 20 lbs. Not heavy to lift, but darn heavy to get in the head with  :pbb:

How many of you have not carried it, but lifted it as if it was on hinges?????????????
It's different to lift it on hinges than it is to carry it.
I've done both and you guys are right, on it's own it's not bad but when trying to open it and suspend it without the spring support assist is quite a different story.

For your car audio #1 upgrade is port the rear deck. Do you wanna leave all your bass rattling your truck or you wanna let it out for a nice overall clean sound. And next add something to stop the bass rattle so therefore nothing gets in the way off messing up all the money you might spend on wanting something that is loud and clear.

Also heres a idea where you might be able to build a box not sure how big you need to build one and if you don't need a huge box you can have hide away storage aswell.

Thank you

only downside to the box for the subs is its not ported and if i redo it i will get a 1100-1200 watt amp and 2 MA audio 8s that are 400RMS and than 800 MAX and get a bigger box and port it.

And i should get a new CD player soon so it will sound even better. either a better poineer or a alpine.

I promise with my set-up with the cd deck turned up to 9-14 sounds cleaner and better than most and my EQ still is sliding around and cutting out stuff sometimes.....the place that did all work is closed down so i am trying to find someone else to build me a new box and order me the subs i want ETC. Also with it turned up to like 3 or 4 you can still hear it over my car at redline with no cats and the windows down.
