Drove my stupid TC 20-30 miles today. Gas, bank, school, post office, etc.
Coasted into the neighborhood and pushed it home... again.
Sheared half the teeth on the dizzy and the aux shaft. *sigh*
I'm never going to sell this POS without another engine. I think I'll drop the 5.0 in it and sell off the go-fast 2.3 goodies separate.
Anyways, I'm going to try and fix it tomorrow.
how come it always breaks!
So basically a "Nice" TC with lots of NEW parts and fixed up old parts, is about 1/100th as reliable as a beat up TC with lots of old nasty stock parts?
hmm
your car is possesed.
$20 for the SC50! sorry to hear that man... Layla basically inspired me. I couldn't believe it when I saw she was for sale.
number 1 cause of aux shaft/gear issues:
this cant help either
:hick:
yea its mad you painted it in traitor colors!! Finky freaking fords!
The AMC Blue was an attempt to exorcise the demons! I also have half of Bob's old TC's interior pieces stained with real chicken's blood.
It's the car, it's possessed. If I stuck the engine in any other TC it would run fine. Stupid car.
Yup...
I don't care what anyone says, you work a 4cyl engine hard enough to make power comparable to a V8, and it's durability is seriously compromised... For a daily driver, once you're past 275hp or so, expect to push it as much as ride...
Yeah, I'll hear about this or that, and so & so's, but I'll NEVER be convinced otherwise...
come to think of it... my old TC (turboranger91's) was a GM color and it was constantly taking dumps on me... broke an A4LD, cracked a T3, jumped followers, popped silicone couplers, 2 blown head gaskets... even the guy who put my exhaust in fvked up the paint on my rear bumper!... I see a trend...
kinda funny to say that based on the fact it is inline and should be stronger bc of the fact. kinda like the old ford inline sixes. just keep taking a beating and keep on working. well thats how i look at it it maybe wrong but in not a super engine tech.
...as opposed to the SO 5.0, which does the work of a four cylinder and lasts forever :hick:
Can't help but sing: "Layla.... you've got me on my knees..."
Sucks you're having so many problems, Mike. Glad I didn't buy that finicky bitch tho :punchballs:
Well.....
Hell, just for shiznits and giggles, throw a stock oil pump in her and see what happens. its not like you havnt got about 50 of them laying around :hick:
My father, who pretty much grew up in the 70's, owned a Pinto at some point in the early 1980's. This was a car he purchased AFTER selling his 72 Firebird Formula 400 due to gas prices. Evidently the word of mouth back then was the 2.3 would run forever. So long as you kept up on the basics like Oil changes, and didn't constantly overheat the thing, it would keep on going and going and going. The fact that some over at NATO have Turbo Coupe's pushing 300k is testament to that.
BUT...
I have to admit, I am a true believer in the old saying
"There's no replacement for displacement"
That inline six is making what, 125hp at best??? It should run forever with annual maintance...
Which falls right in with what I'm saying... Hell I know where there is a SO 5.0 that's never had the heads or intake off... Has 341K miles, NOT km... MILES...
Welcome to the dark side!
Once again I think it is a test that Turbo Coupes put us thru. They know they need to be taken care of. So they feel the need to make it hard on us. It just seems to me to many give up. What are you a Quitter? If so why aren't you in rehab with the rest of the quitters. Why not fix it up right. There have been many treads over at turboford explaining how to mod the Aux shaft to help out the design. Then for make 100% sure you don't have the HV oil pump. I've been there done that. It sucks but you gotta do what you gotta do.
The 200 in my fairmont was rated somewhere between 85 and 92 horsepower. 8:1 comp, 7 mains, usually owned by grandmas, yeah they should go forever. Plus I6's are naturally balanced so theres no worries there.
Sorry to hear about that again i really want a TC someday even with the few bad things i have heard lately.
5.0 5.0 5.0 5.0.
X2 X2 X2 X2 :hick:
But seriously, built with good parts(and stay away from a HV oil pump, not needed anyway), I don't see a problem with a 2.3T at 250/275Hp...
You said it man. Attempting to make north of 300HP in a 4-Cyl designed in the late 60's as a fuel economy lump and then drive it everyday is just insane. I've had my fun, but it's time to go back into the real world of V8's (this coming from one of the staunchest 2.3 supporters at that).
I do have a stock 2.3T laying around and an IHI. I could probably cobble it all back together and get Layla back to factory stock. Then I can sell it. And the go-fast stuff. And the 5.0. And all the parts. And buy something I really want!!! (Or maybe Ted has another Caddy motor...)
*Mumbles something about wishing he had built a Chevy 350 instead of the 302 in his garage..*
I sold my 350 :hick:
I do still have the AMC 401 though :D
And aren't you stabbing a sweet TT302 into a TC? ;)
God I have the utmost respect for you 2.3 guys I could never deal with that garbage. I have a very low tolerance level for putting work in and getting nothing back. Obviously the 2.3 has potential for power output but for me personally it wouldn't be worth it.
MAN I love my big v8. You would too....just sign here. LOL :D [Bon Scott]"Come right in, forget about him, well have ourselves a ball...."[\Bon Scott]
Nothing is more off-putting to me than to pop the hood of a car and see a 5.0....
Actually the 2.3 Lima was designed in the early 70s... First saw light of day in the '74 Double Mistakes and Pintos(I've owned both)... It's sorta based on the German EAO 2.0 OHC engine, but shares no common parts... That engine was used in the '71-'73 Pintos(along with the Kent 1.6L OHV engine),was dropped after '74... The Ranger 2.0 & 2.5 are shrunk/stretched 2.3s...
70's fuel economy lump then.
All I know is that I'm never going to modify one again.
Maybe John isn't so nuts for trying to stuff an LS1/T56 into his 88 TC...
I'll remember not to open the hood, if I come for a visit...:hick:
4.6 4V......with a Kenne Bell blower.
No doubt COOL...
But basically I share Chucks distaste of 5.0s for the 4.6(yeah I own TWO, doesn't mean I have to like them)...
Yea im with you guys(i own a 5.0 but still) Most semi fast fords out there are powered by a 302, They are everywhere! Which is why I think the 2.3T is awesome because it makes the power, gets the gas milage, and its american! (sorta)
once i replace every single gasket on the motor and replace the oil pump (which finally came it today), and rebuild the tranny, i don't foresee any problems with this car... oh yea, i'll be redoing the a/c system too.
sorry to hear about your car. she knows you don't like her anymore and she's pissed.:beatyoass:
:D
Mike, why not put a STOCK 3.8 and leave it. Thats different. Everyone wants to either build up a turbo 5.0 or build a badass 2.3. Hell I think a stock anything is rare and cool in it's own way
I know how you feel. Fix one thing and another thing breaks. Fix that then something else. Always something. Always. I put waaay too much money into that car. The nicer I treated my TC, the worse it treated me.
Best thing I ever did was when I parted it out and bought the Stang.
Good luck with the V8.
Because he doesn't enjoy the company of men.
BWAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!
The V8 will be in a NON TC. As in a totally new (to me anyways) car. Any TC's from here on out will be stock!
I love my 2.3 just for the fact that it is reliable...
HATERS!
+111
Though mine is stock... its been put through everything. I dont think the PO changed the oil at all.
I'd much rather have a reliable engine that can handle good amounts of horsepower. 2.3s may be cool, but are apparently a PITA to get performance and reliability out of. However, I'd love to build a 2.3T Pinto.
Some may hate 5.0s, but then again, there must be a reason that so many people get them (same goes for sbc 350s). They're cheap, have a great aftermarket following, all the knowledge is out there, they can handle horsepower, and can be reliable at the same time.
